As a kid brought up in England we were taught (endlessly) Look Left, Look right, then look left again.! It’s why we don’t get knocked down when visiting countries that drive on the wrong side of the road.
Like yourself I too was born in the UK and I noticed in London they paint in on the Pavement "Look Left, Look Right and Look Left again" for all the tourists who come from countries that do not drive on the Left.
What a lovely family! Your enthusiasm and pleasure in each other's company shines through and through. So glad you enjoyed London, and I hope my fellow citizens were kind, polite, welcoming and helpful to you. Do come back soon!
@@howardmakin9359 very nice comment thank you. We really enjoy London and the folks. We’ve been back once already and look forward to another return. Cheers!
So we kinda booked a trip to London for our family of 5 and didn’t plan anything ahead of time. This video was CLUTCH! And thanks for not being an obnoxious RU-vidr but a regular guy with a normal family that does cool stuff. You made a fantastic video here and as another PHX resident I appreciate it!
Wow, thanks so much for the very nice comment! We appreciate it! Sometimes it can be a little more relaxed and fun to not have everything so detailed and planned. Have a great trip and let us know how it goes! ✈️👍
Quick tip, 4/5g internet is a lot cheaper in the UK compared with the US. You can literally pick up a sim card for a 1 month contract for about £10 that will have 30gb of internet so please don't pay your US provider for its international roaming as it will be much more expensive than just grabbing a sim here. You can get them at the airport, at a phone shop or at many local grocery stores 😊
Do you what sim card i should get if i want alot of internet or unlimited, and for 3 people, we only need for 4 days, but we want the cheapest option available. we don't need to text or call eachother, we only need internet.
@@Thaleya1 I've never heard of any tourist SIM cards like they have in some countries that only last a few days (I could be wrong) so I think your best bet is just see what they have at the airport. I think unlimited is overkill I would be shocked if you use more than 10gb in 4days, you'd have to be constantly watching 4k movies and i can't imagine you come all the way to London to do that 😅 maybe just get 2 SIM cards and hotspot each other if you think you won't all go separate ways
I love walking. You learn more and absorb the information around you way better. But when I'm with family it's a constant struggle. I always tell them it's not very far and they start believing me less. Lol
Peter Pan is 120 years old and landed well before Disney. I think there are least two statues of the character in London, and the copyright for Peter Pan was donated by its author to the Great Ormand Street Hospital. It is a London hospital that is entirely devoted to sick children. An act of parliament was passed to extend copyright for the hospital some years ago, which may only apply in the UK, but I believe it is still a tradition for use of the book in theatres etc. around the world to make a donation to the hospital
The Argyll Arms pub was never a department store called ‘Liberty'. The picture you point to is of a very famous department store called Libertys which is a very famous Tudor styled timbered building which the end of the road where the Argyll Arms is. Where did you get the information from? Glad you enjoyed your visit. Fun video.
I think I was just reading the stuff off the walls upstairs and got it all mixed up. As I researched it now, I was clearly off. Liberty is unmistakable and looks nothing like the Argyll. Sorry about that. Thanks for the correction! A lot of history in London, can't wait to return! Cheers!
It is the best thing to do is to get a bus top tour when you first arrive in the city then it gives you an idea what you want to see and go back to in your holiday
You guys had a good time in London and great content . I can't wait to visit london with my family. Thanks for sharing all the great places in London. ☺
Great stuff...love london...you looked as though you had a great time...I live three hundred miles away and I've been to London 5 times....love it....good on you all..
If you go to London again there is a train that’s called the Heathrow Xpress that’ll take you straight from Heathrow Airport right into the heart of London.
great video thank u for sharing. thats a lot of food for breakfast and the nibbles ...definitely gotta be hungry to finish it all haha. The record player at the end very cool too.
👍👍👍Somehow this channel caught my eye and came in. Thanks to this video, I'm reminded of the memories of London I visited a few weeks ago. Thank you. Have a nice day.
We’ll you guys did a lot in such a short period of time / well done, plus I like that your family all get along so well / no arguments: bickering etc!!
Thanks @freddiemac, we can't wait to spend more time in London! So much to do there - we only broke the ice. And...we just might bicker a bit... sometimes. 🤣
Never take a cab / taxi / Uber from Heathrow. They will stitch you up. There is a great train service (Elizabeth Line and Heathrow Express) and the Piccadilly line tube.
@@AmericanTravelFamily 150 mph under the sea is pretty outstanding. I never used Eurostar but when I drove trucks (semis) abroad I used the Shuttle where you drive your truck (semi) on to the train and then go the the club car for a meal. 45 minutes later you are in another country.
@@1chish the trains are really amazing and convenient. Can’t beat how fast and easy they are and you’re right, before you know it, you’re in another country!
Hi, you a large choice of weather, it can rain one hour the next bright sunshine and warm or rain for a week non stop, it even snowed in June once, people in America forget how far north Britain is. Regards. JH
A tip for you next time is to stay in a hotel that is a bit further out from central London, like in Stratford, or east London. They have several travelodges and premier inn's, which sell you rooms and breakfast for so much cheaper than a hotel in central London would be.
Hi, hope you do come back , London is a big city, to much to do in one trip, there’s a joke about London no one know where it stops. Please don’t expect the same good weather regards. JH
A very enjoyable video... and a great family. London, like every city, has it dark side and it's downsides but you showcased the good and diplomatically ignored the bad. Thanks. As a Brit and former resident of London it remains one of my favourite places to visit. But I'd love to see Phoenix too ... ever since Glen Campbell put it in my mind... and Alburquerque ... and Oaklahoma ...and the Lights of Cincinnati ... and don't forget Galveston! 😘
You guys were are actually really lucky with the changing of the guard. Normally it is the "red coat" guards, but other military units are sometimes given the honour. In your case it was the RAF!
Hi, Great video, no silly background music, am pleased you had great weather so unusual in London. The underground has been improved a lot in the last 30 years, but there’s more to do, in particular the heat problem, which is caused by clay around the tunnels, nothing holds heat like clay , TFL will eventually sort this out. What is holding things back, is the cost overruns of the new Elizabeth line, so I hope you all enjoyed your stay here regards. JH
Thanks for watching! The weather was amazing for our first time in London, sunny and warm! Thx for the info on the underground, we thought it was quick and easy to use while getting around London. We can't wait to come back and explore more of this great city!
Anyone travelling from US get a morning flight (eliminates the jet lag, straight to bed when you arrive and fresh in the morning) keep in mind London is one of the most expensive places in the world ££££ 😢. Check out the street food 🥘
We've tried many different ways to beat jet lag. I think you just have to sleep when you're tired until your body acclimates. And yes, its was pricey in London!
Thanks for the video guys. Looks like you had a lot of fun. Just a trivial pronunciation tip. The English pronounce most words that end in “ham” as “um”. So Buckingham is pronounced closer to Buckingum Palace if you want to pronounce it like a British English speaker. Not that you have to of course.
We did not know that! Thanks for the tip! Matt actually tries to do his research and pronounce things as close as we can when we travel. We understand how annoying it can be to locals when things aren't said right. Thanks for the insider info!
As a Brit living in Toronto I would say the protocol for walking in public areas is to use common sense and not walk or bump into other people .There is no correct side but instead politely give as much room to pass others well in advance . And not walk right into someone else's parhway and at the very last second move which people tend to do here, like a game of chicken.
Thanks for watching and the compliment! But unfortunately, we did not this time. However, we all love the Beatles and can't wait to get back to London!
great Video guys as a londoner of 70 years I would say you need about 2 weeks at least here dont forget all the museums are free once again thank you you came across as a lovely family 😊
Those signs telling you which side of the pavement to walk on are a hangover from the pandemic and were meant to prevent people walking towards each other. There are no general rules here about which side to walk on.
There's no right or left in Europe on the pavements - too crowded. You just kinda swerve at the last second. The walk on the left (or right) signs were for social distancing in the pandemic. A lot haven't yet been removed, but you no longer need to pay heed. Also London is THE theatre capital in the world, there are over 1 million theatre seats in the city -almost as many as stadium seats (which is also a record breaker).
Yikes, our UK phones often cost little or nothing to go abroad. My tip is to just buy a UK sim card while you're here. You can get enough data for a week or two for £10
Observations and facts: 1) Big mistake not booking a hotel going to the most visited city in the world which gets 20 million tourists a year. 2) Those newer red buses (not the tourist ones) cost each as much as a Bugatti Veyron. 3) Piccadilly Circus is not the Times Square of London - it came first. Times Square is the Piccadilly Circus of New York. 4) You don’t need to buy a card or ticket to use the public transport. Just touch your bank card or iPhone on the barrier and it will charge you the cheapest fare for any given journey. 5) The West End (London’s theatre district) has 22 more theatres than New York’s Broadway. The largest theater on Broadway (Gershwin Theatre) seats 1933. The largest one in London (London Colosseum) seats 2,359. The second largest in London (London Palladium) seats 2,286.
Great facts! Love #3 and #5. We are used to booking hotels last minute, maybe London is not the best city to do that, although we lucked out with the Hard Rock. Too bad they rebranded that property, hope it is still as good. Next time we will try to pay for the tube with our phones, that seems a lot simpler as long as the kids have a card on their phone also. Cheers, good info!
@@AmericanTravelFamily ❤️ #5 - the West End make considerably more money too. About $1.12 billion across 19,244 performances a year VS $845m for Broadway.
@@AmericanTravelFamily Not really haha. I live close to Bath and Bristol so London is very different. I did take in a lot more of what you showed than you may think as I haven’t visited all of the main attractions yet 😂
you guys should have tried cycling through central london especially the Parks or indeed the canals and the Thames Path. PLUS you never actually visited much in the OG London. A city within a City within a Country within a Country ! yes. the City of London - St Paul’s and way way more. It’s Roman London. and to me as a Londoner the best kept secret around.
This is all great info. We've been back to London since this video and did visit and stay in the City of London. There is so much to do and see here, can't wait to return again. Thanks for all the suggestions!
@@AmericanTravelFamily go check the Barbican. an incredible arts entertainment complex & so much more. spend a day around there - eat at the Jugged Hare pub. have a cocktail in the Barbican. see the lakes and fountains too. and the Tropical Hot House. Go to Guildhall / The Ned ( James Bond Goldfinger location ) / Roof of No1 Poultry / Bank of England Museum / Royal Exchange / Spitalfields / Clerkenwell for the grave of Karl Marx plus it’s a cool area. the Olympic Park and Stadium / Canary Wharf / canoe /cycle along the canals ….and come SOUTH visit Royal Greenwich ( my home 😉) to see the birthplace of the Royal Navy plus Elizabeth I and Henry VIII ( arrive by Uber Boat ). that’s a few things.
Just stumbled onto your channel. So glad you enjoyed my country. I live in the north near the Lake District and have only been to London for work. Hope you enjoy Paris…. I asked my wife to marry me outside Notre Dame. I’ll now browse your videos…. And sub.
This is so great! Thanks for the positive reply! We loved London. Can't wait to explore more of London, we've been to Paris 3 times and love it as well. We were so in awe at all the destruction the fire did to Notre Dame, but looks like the renovation is going well. Thanks for the sub!!
Basically, we just randomly saw this place on the way to China town, so we wanted to see what the shop was all about since it was so bright and to see if they had American brands. We actually didn't buy anything and just did a quick walk thru. Thanks to comments here, we later learned that those shops might be run by not the most honest people so we're glad we didn't. We don't seek out American brands when we travel, we all love local and new worldly experiences! Thanks for the comment!
@@AmericanTravelFamily Thank you for your reply. I would understand if you did, sometimes it is nice to be reminded of home. When I was in Denmark I had to try a Burger King just to see how different it was, and it was the best BK that I have ever had. I did not know that some of those shops are run by dodgy people, good to know and to avoid. Great video and I am glad that you and your family had a great time in London.
again unfortunately its to late for this family but i think them bus tours of lodon are like £35 or something... if you take the number 1 bus its route goes past pretty much 95% of the land marks as this tour bus and its £3.50 or use the underground to get to the land marks again way cheaper and you get up and close with the land marks
Definitely a 10. The weather was great, warm for London, almost 80F. We wish we spent more time there, because we only brushed the surface on things to see and do. We liked how easy it was to get around and the amazing concentration of things to see within the city. And there wasn't much of a language barrier. 🤣
In the UK kids are allowed to have an alcoholic drink as long as they are eating a meal at a table and sitting with their parents. Is that the same in the US?
@@AmericanTravelFamily It is illegal to buy alcohol for someone under 18 in a licensed premises, the only exception is for 16 or 17 year-olds who are allowed to drink beer, wine or cider with food if with an adult (but they may not buy the alcohol themselves). It is legal for anyone over 5 to drink alcohol.
Rather than spend $80 on your mobile phone plan, I'd suggest getting a PAYG (pay as you go) sim or international sim card in country. Save a load of money on calling abroad and calling each other whilst here.
My sister lives in Spain, when she comes back here for holidays she swaps out her Spanish sim card for a British sim card. £10 will get you unlimited texts and phone calls, 30gb data and unlimited social media (effectively social media is free as it doesn't use your 30gb data).
@@AmericanTravelFamily I have always walked around individuals or groups of people, whether left or right. It's not the same as keeping to the right on the escalators on the London Underground!
Just take the path of least resistance! I'm a born and bred Londoner and have lived and worked in and around London all my life, and not once have I ever given a single thought to which side of the pavement I should be walking on. That is, until American tourists started questioning it! 😉 As I said in a previous comment, any signs you see telling you to stick to a particular side were only put there during the height of the pandemic, and were meant to prevent you meeting other pedestrians head-on.
