So the captain fired a hand held weapon, fired from within his ship and it destroyed the entire fleet?!!

Decent story plot but too many gaps in story line. As noted hand held device fired from inside the ship? Should have blown a hole in his ship prior to the beam hitting the alien ships, not to mention a hand held device even remotely having the power to do significant damage to a Dreadnaught size ship. How did Powell get from his ship which was about to be overrun, into the Emperor’s ship to battle him with the the others? I know it’s “sci-fi” at least make it believable and foremost coherent in the story line.
