‘Lone Wolf: Book 1: Flight from the Dark’ - Game Book Review - Friday Fantasy Show - Episode 192.
Who doesn’t love a good quest? Thought so. The Bottled Imp steps into the game book world of ‘Lone Wolf: Book 1: Flight from the Dark’ written by Joe Dever and illustrated by Gary Chalk.
I must admit, these series of game books passed me by when they were first published way back in 1984. Not quite sure I missed them as they’ve gone on to sell over 9 million copies worldwide!
It wasn’t until a Bottled Imp fan asked if I’d be reviewing them that I discovered this vast and varied game book series. To date twenty-nine titles have been published spanning a thirty-two year time.
We had the privilege to interview Joe at the UK Games Expo in 2016 in June, and we found him to be gentleman, passionate about fantasy and writing. Joe sadly passed away in November that year. We feel very blessed to have met him, albeit, for a brief moment.
‘Flight from the Dark’ sets up this game book series. You are Lone Wolf. In a devastating attack the Darklords have destroyed the monastery where you were learning the skills of the Kai Lords. You are the sole survivor and have sworn revenge.

This is my all time favourite game book. I know this is subjective, but the Lone Wolf books are far superrior to the Fighting Fantasy ones.

Thanks for watching. Yeah, I think a lot of people may feel that way. I've only read/played this Lone Wolf book so I'm eager to read more. The latest Fighting Fantasy new book, The Gates of Death, is good fun. We'll be reviewing that soon.

Especially for book 13!!! If u choose the left path on a particular occassion, you will get to a chamber where a golden key or the map of Mxxxxx will earn u jars of herbs where one of them is Oede Herb! Most gamebook authors, like Dave Morris, Joe Dever, Jamie Thomson, Ian Livingstone are people with Leftwing political ideologies. But if the current political standard is applied, their books which typically demonise Orcs, Giaks and Drakarrims (the minorities) should be more qualified to be banned as compared to the contents of the 6 Dr Seuss banned books.

All the main books (except the final one) is available in electronic form through Project Aon. They basically just scanned each page and illustration into HTML format and linked the "Turn to..." bits, so they just work through pretty much any web browser. There was some issue with the final book that was written years after the rest and it isn't included, but the main Lone Wolf story ran in three groups (1-5, 6-12 and 13-20) and the later books (21-28) feature a different character, so you get all of Lone Wolf's story and it is this second character that doesn't fully complete. The Aon Project also has the Grey Wolf set of 4 books and a one-off called Freeway Warrior that I'd never heard of.

I first got into these books in the late 80's here in the States and have been the biggest fan eversince and to this day. Thank you for taking the time to take a look into this little-known but iconic series. If you can get a hold of one of the hardbound reprints from Mongoose a few years ago (c.2010?), it expanded the book with about 100 or so sections that had you fighting your way out of the Monastery, and it offered a richness tothe story we didn't have when we were kids. And of course, a d10 is a simple substitute for the random number table.

As a passionate D&D fan who struggles to play consistently with my friends, these books are a perfect way to scratch that itch. My uncle introduced me to this series a few years ago and I have absolutely loved them. The fact that it is both an interesting story as well as a fun RPG is great. I've recently shown them to the rest of my friends, and I hope they enjoy them just as much as I do.

I LOVED these books as a kid! I recall the 1st book being the shortest and the least interesting, basically because it was a short overland trek. But perhaps it had the most replayability because there were so many paths to take. The subsequent books are more involved and take you around the world of Magnamund and encounter more of the evil beasts that travel the realm.

Joe Dever's Lone Wolf is one of the best Adventure Gamebook series. It inspired me to write my own Castles of Imagination (linked so that choices in book 1 matters later in the series). Five of six books are currently available. 3d6 and an imagination are needed to play.

for the random number table you can use a d10 , they wear originally going to have the die with each book. but the cost way back in the 1980's was to much.
