It seems that even when you're in a vast flat region, in the middle of nowhere in places like Nevada, there's always spectacular mountains to be seen in the distance. That's the difference between here and the Australia 'Outback'. We have many very lonely roads but seldom do you see distant mountains. We call them Ranges.
Nevada is called the basin and range stage 💪 the most mountains in the US other than Alaska. So all the roads are down in the basins, surrounded by beautiful ranges!
@@kenhoyer8601 Indeed. In fact, I'd consider Nevada a far more spectacular region. Also, unlike Nevada, the Australian 'Outback' has only a few sealed (Bitumen) roads. The rest are just gravel and dust and often severely 'corrugated'
In 1962 I was on my honeymoon with my new husband. We were on a lambretta 135 with all our gear and 2 guitars. Coming from Ely we commenced to Austin. We were 21 & on our way to work in the Civil Rights movement in the South. But we first took a trip around the U.S. We took $100 & we were both singers. So, we hit Austin around 8 pm. We found a funky bar & went in & asked if we could pass the hat and sing. They were thrilled. Not only did we do well, but we met some wonderful Nevada characters. I can't remember names very well, but there was a lady who was the Sheriff, Postmaster, barber and a wonderful artist. She specialized in iddy bitty desert oils. She set us up with a bowlegged cowboy named "Happy Jack" who lived in a trailer at the rodeo arena. We stayed overnight there & slept on hay bales. Next day we asked the lady, who's name I just can't bring up to give my new hubby a haircut, which she did. She also gave us one of her little paintings. She was a wonderful story teller & we loved that. We really hated to leave Austin. We didn't know about the Petroglyphs & left w/o seeing them. But we did camp in a place where the local Indians were harvesting piñon pines & were invited to participate and take some with us. Delicious and great great fun for a couple of youngsters. Thanks for making such a clear lovely video.
Russ, I’m going through a very emotional time with a very sick pet. You have no idea how much your videos are helping me cope. Thank you for sharing your adventures on the road and your calming voice and music help so much.
Hey Carolyn I sure hope that your pet is doing better I've been there done that and it's more emotional than I could ever describe. But rest of have a calming voice in the music is nice and I've traveled all of the United States but I never went really off the interstate just because I was single woman. So I do it via his videos as now I'm retired.
I’m sorry about your beautiful child, pet. They are so special. You’re right, Russ is a calming presence with his narration, beautiful photography, drone work, music and fine research.
Thanks for taking me along, again....At 21:00 the highway cuts right through a massive cemetery and I couldn't believe the size and number of grave markers...Might've been a more interesting walk through than the petroglyphs....( we have gas stations here in Canada called 'Petrocan ', probably no connection, eh...haha ) .....I wonder if there are any well known historical folks buried in that cemetery ? .....( I'm only interested 'cause I'll be moving into one sooner than I'd like.....talk about your permanent RV park ! ..... .haha)
I just love the old covered sidewalks . Saw a short span when you were driving through Austin. I especially like the Board Walks. ..once I was hitchhiking and landed in Virginia City, Nevada. I "slept" under an old barn like building near the edge of town. I kept hearing boots walking on the wooden walkway across the street from me. But , every time I looked, there was no one there. Spooky enough to keep me awake most the night.
I rode that road about 10 times in the winter, on my sled, the road was covered with packed snow and ice. The Hiskey stage truck had chains and would allow us to hook up on the back of the truck, to the summit. Great fun, great ride all the way through town and beyond depending on how much you wanted to walk back. Dave Hansen, Lived in Austin 33-48 dad was Forest Ranger
We drove Hwy 50 from just east of Reno to Utah about 9 years ago ( Great Basin Nat'lPark/Lehman Caves was the best part )....It's a long, long, lonely road across Nevada alright. It's many long hours of driving between each of Russ's videos. Up and down many mountain passes. We always stopped at any cafe's or burger/ice cream joints that were open just to talk to the locals. Not sure if I'd do that drive again. I think once was enough.
Another great video Russ. Few years back we visited lake Powell and did a river tour and saw similar rock formations and saw petroglyphs along the river very cool. Thanks again for sharing your adventure.
The skies are so open and blue. Don't get that in NE Ohio. Overcast here most of the time. My travels out west years ago are only memories. Thanks for the ride-a-long to update the memories. Stay healthy and God bless. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋♂️
Subscribed to your channel. Main reason is that you show the area and points of interest. Without the selfies most people show taking up a lot of time instead of the actual scenery. Thanks.
Thank you for traveling all these roads and byways, introducing us to the quiet secluded spots and the grand tourist attractions in a very educational way. I appreciate your efforts, time and dedication to your travels and to take us all along with you to these fantastic places. If by chance you find yourself on the West coast on I-5 or 80 going thru the Sacramento region, I would like to invite you to dinner, my treat and not Denny's of McDonalds. There are some gold mines and other historic places I can point you to such as Coloma where the gold rush started or Hangtown / Placerville or Yosemite. Thanks again for going to all these places and taking us along.
Good stuff Russ. I did the opposite direction last year on my 60 yr solo bicycle bucket list ride from Sacramento valley to Arkansas ( through many of those same U.S. 50 stretches ). I did leave your path at Ely, and into Baker before entering Utah. Awesome quiet lonely stretches! Thanks for refreshing my mind with these shots.
Were you following the Western Express route from the Adventure Cycling Association? I peddled that route from Pueblo, CO to San Francisco in 2015...that is one lonely stretch between Baker and Milford, UT.
This is so relaxing to watch - super therapeutic. I have been to a lot of these sites and it is fun to revisit here. My pup also watches these when im gone ❤
Russ, your use of background is so tasteful. It adds to the visual experience and never detracts or is intrusive. I wish more RU-vid content creators would take music cues ( pun intended ) from you!
The United States is just Majestic! You get just about every type of landscape here. The desert is simply gorgeous! As a child I spent 2 yrs. living in the CA high desert and 1 yr. in CO's high desert! Very pretty!
Appreciate the petroglyphs and rock “sculptures” I understand more and more from your videos why my late bro loved Nevada! He was originally from Canada - but I didn’t follow him south 😊Cheers!
After all of these years, your Bumper Music still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Keep your presentations coming. I can't wait for the days to cool off just a little so I an go visit some of those places. Thank you Russ.
Would love to get about 5 acres of that land and set up shop… My Grandma was Aztec and National Geographic had taken a photo of her and others with big rocks like that in the background, looks like Home
🙋Hello Russ! The petroglyphs were interesting to see. Austin is so quiet. Not a soul to be seen until you got to the end of town passing the gas station. I didn't notice a restaurant or a store for groceries. I think the stars would be beautiful at night. Sparkly (like diamonds). Mom would take all 4 of us out to the outhouse at 3:00 a.m. I loved looking at the stars. Now my Sister has a street light. In hopes you are staying cool & not affected with high temperatures. Have a good week. 👍
Can't remember if I replied. Love your videos. Haven't been able to do all my usual road trips so I am loving all your videos!!!Never been through the part of Nevada. Can't wait for your next adventure!
Russ, thanks for sharing another great video. You pointed out a very good reminder when traveling, don't focus on the destination but enjoy the journey. I didn't realize how many places and things to see on hw 50. Good information in planning my future adventures of driving that route.
When I moved to Nevada, over four decades ago, Austin was the county seat. With about 90% of the county living north in the Battle Mountain area they moved the county seat there.
You missed Stokes Castle just up the hill from the gas station. Neat place as well and gives you a fantastic view of the range below. I was there just 2 weeks ago travelling the Lincoln Highway section of Nevada as well, love the videos you post up!
Wow. Immense thanks. I live in the Reno area and did not know about these attraction areas even though I drive Highway 50 as often as possible. I am going to check these sites out.
Lots of history for sure along that highway I saw were you met somewhere along the loneliest highway with Greywolf (Ron ) on his freedom walk to DC he had some very kind words about you in his video ….. enjoyed watching and learning about this stretch of Nevada!!
I lived in Austin in 2019 my friends own the International Hotel an when the pandemic hit the whole town just went outta business an other than the gas station I think everything else closed up for good. It's sad cause it's a great little town an really great people.Great video!!!
We stayed almost a week in the pullout on Bob Scott Summit last year. The campground has very limited spaces that are big enough and flat enough for an RV. It's better suited to tent campers.
Is the Lincoln Highway and U.S. 50 two different roads, Russ? Do they overlap much of the way or almost never? Do they share the same alignment mostly in the west?
They should have named the State "VACUUM" instead of "NEVADA". The State is so empty. I bought a "Delorme" Road Atlas of Nevada and, apart from Clark County in the South, there is nothing anywhere. This is truly "in the middle of nowhere". When I drove Rte 50, all I saw was the asphalt of the road and empty vastness all around, no ditches, no electrical lines, nothing. Your video is redeeming my first impressions dating back to the 1980s, showing us nice inhabitated areas here and there. But, and it's a big "but", there is no McDonald's in Austin, what a pity !! Thank you Russ ! RICHARD
Nice video, thank you! Love Austin Nevada! The written Egyptian is pictorial as are the Petroglyphs. Moses, who was well educated in the Egyptian culture, was a Hebrew that led the Sons of Jacob also called Israel out of Egypt. They, modern scholars could not understand Egyptian until they discovered the Roseta stone, a Greek translation of the Egyptian! The early Hebrew was somewhat pictorial in the first five books of the Hebrew Bible! Scholarship of the day and later gave us the Hebrew we see today which is called the Alaph-Bet, Alphabet after the first two letters of the Hebrew! Bible Greek is koine meaning common. Hellenistic Greek came later. Languages change but the Alphabets and grammar remain except for style such as punctuation. I am not an authority on Grammar! The Bible says that mankind has been on the Earth about 6,000 years! There is much speculation and conjecture! History and common sense are most interesting. Much Conjecture forces its way and is sourced from prejudice! History and honesty tell us much! Ron PTL USA
