Yesterday someone got in his truck (or car) and drove to the little house in rural Mississippi where John Hurt was born, that had become the MJH Museum. They stopped, got out and set alight to the building. It burned to the ground. It was a memorial to a man who, according to people who met him or saw him play, seemed to glow with some kind of beauty of spirit, which to me comes across in every note he played, sang or spoke that's come down to us.

I was in the process of transcribing Lonesome Valley when I came across your video. It's taken me a week to learn how to finger pick and sing the song at the same time. It would have taken a week longer if I had to transcribe/tab it. Thank you for being such a great fan of MJH and for teaching a note-for-note tutorial. I'm still in the process of working the shoulder shrug into playing and singing. Again, thank you.

Hey Andragog, appreciate the words. Glad I saved you some time. And yes. I'm just a huge fan in general of this style of guitar playing. It annoys me that it's called "travis" style as countless players paved the way to solidify the sound and technique outside of Merle. Yeah, it's great. And I've gotten a few comments about singing and playing. Maybe i'll do a video about that. My voice doesnt sell these old blues/folks songs that well, but I'll try my best. Unfortunately I've got no tricks. Just put in the damn time! And you're welcome again. Please sub and consider a donation. if not keep enjoying the content, liking and sharing. best!

@@MikesMusicMethod I've been wondering that myself. I don't even know any chords (other than G now) not to mention how to get in/out of any of them. Something about fingerstyle seems to gel with me, the muscle memory of the patterns. Once I got the bass line down steady I was pretty set. Granted, I can't play it perfect every time but sometimes I can and its all memorized. I would just play a section that you'd show until I had it down, then moved onto the next section like you said. I probably worked on it for like 6 or 7 weeks and would just play it whenever I had time. I learned one thing, which was that if you want to learn a song you'd better like it a whole lot because you're going to be playing it a lotttt. Thanks again. PS: you know any Fahey songs?

Thank you Mike! By far the best tutorial of this song. The only part that's tripping me up is the part by the 3 min mark. Is he lifting his pinky of the 3rd fret to make the high E twice? Is it possible to tab this song out. Also I take it that in your intro that was everything that's included in the song with the turnaround? Thanks again. By the way, the shoulder move is absolutely essential to getting the feel of the song!!
@MikesMusicMethod
@MikesMusicMethod 4 года назад
Thanks '45 Pete. Much appreciated. At 3minutes i demo 3 beats: 1 + 2. Beat 1 is the 3rd fret 6th string with 3rd fret 1st string. Beat 2 is the 2nd string open. Beat 2 is the 3rd fret 4th string but now with first string open. Helpful? II dont have any good program for writing out tab, and I'm not sure how many people would find it helpful verse me putting in the labor. I suppose I could charge like a buck or two for the tab, maybe that'd be a way to get some support. thoughts?
@Mr1945pete
@Mr1945pete 4 года назад
@@MikesMusicMethod Yeah, There's a guy named Jerry who puts out Jerry's guitar bar and he does really well with the lessons. You should check him out. I like how you break the song down into parts, but maybe putting all the parts together in the end and playing it once through slowly would really help. I would pay a few bucks for some tab. It's like the road map you need once you get all the parts down. It seems like Mississippi John Hurt has a subtle variation on every single part, so it's hard to keep track of it. You do an excellent job of getting those parts down that other guys miss. And the shoulder reference is awesome!

But this and don’t think twice I thought were unreachable but your lessons were for me the best on RU-vid and I now have them in the bag. Lee, thanks for the kind words and so glad you're learning from the channel? What and how's life like in Vietnam?? Hmm...hard to say. I guess it depends on your background and where you're coming from. To get all the extra frills in Dont Think Twice might be harder, especially because the tempo is so upbeat. So i'd say that one is harder. Lonesome is just odd straight up odd. Thanks again, Lee. And if you're getting value from the channel please consider giving some value back with one time or monthly support via paypal or patreon. Every little bit helps.

@@MikesMusicMethod mike, life in Vietnam is usually the best, extremely friendly people and stress free, but right now we are in tight lockdown and no fun at all, no international travel for 16 months also and will continues for months yet. Yes, don’t think twice is more challenging due to the tempo... I just learned spike drivers blues and think that it’s a good stepping stone to lonesome valley. Regarding the patreon, I would like to contribute however my U.K. bank card expired over a year ago and I haven’t had one since as the bank won’t send it internationally, I would fly back once a year but due to covid if I leave Vietnam I wouldn’t be allowed back in! @MikesMusicMethod
@MikesMusicMethod Год назад
Sorry, Matt. No reference track. Yeah, MJH didnt carry tuners around and he's always a little sharp or flat. And apologies. In all my more recent videos I myself do slow run throughs of all the song parts creating my own reference track (in large part because of helpful feedback like yours!) If you have a decent ear just try and listen for him playing the lowest note of the chord....match it carefully, and then tune your guitar from that starting strings pitch. Some tuners even let you adjust the frequency of the pitch, so find that one note on the low E string, and then tweak your tuners Hz so that your E is in tune (this might be 432 or 448 or whatever, instead of 440).
