Simple doesn’t always mean bad everyone But that higher level ability, imagine having a grave domain cleric and not only do they take the risk of taking a lot of damage if they fail the save but it would be even more volatile Making your way through all the sub classes so far, good luck guys on the new book comes out
First, the Prince John/Sir Hiss reference was money. Second, monks are usually best without multiclass, but just think of the tasty RP flavor if you multiclass this with Shadow Sorcerer or Undying Warlock. Oh baby.
I'd love to play this class as a warforged terminator character it could be so funny. I haven't played a monk yet and if I get the opportunity after this book this might be my first subclass for monk!
ah geez, Hour or Reaping, and a little Kobold with its little Grovel, Cower, and Beg ability. falls to his knees groveling to the enemies of the ground and pops Hour of Reaping so the enemy is confused they fear this grovels creature. why are they afraid again.... almost like a phobia. in afraid but don's understand why, as the party slips in a kills the enemy. RP GOLD! quote is from Disney's Robin Hood
This might be a stretch of flavor but here is my idea with this subclass: Heavy metal Centuar. Basically I got him to have the lute proficiency then when he does his AOE fear he does a low growl that creepies out everyone. Everytime he gets a kill he plays a hard riff. Idk just an idea.
This is very much a time and place subclass. It has potential to be very over powered but only if your something like the main combat in your party or the meat sheild
I am a huge fan of the Monk, not the class or subclasses, but the concept itself. Sadly it feels like this is one of the better subclasses for Monk and even it is a bit lacking. Great video though, always entertaining getting both of your thoughts on the game :D
I would say this class is probably one of the best kiteing classes in dnd, especially with more range dmg allies. Especially good with agroing minions while the party takes on the big bad, if you pick up the tough and mobility feats then you can actually dump more points into wisdom. This also helps with not hitting allies with the fear condition. I also made mine proficient in medicine so that I could basically become the reviver and ignore taking hits to do so.
Thanks for the review! I just can’t seem to find a link that is super viable. Thematically they’re awesome. It’s just tough to outshine so many amazing classes
It's just me but "hour of reaping" specify that the creature can see you. Soooo.. say if the creature is blind, have their eyes closed, or have their back to you.. doesn't that mean they can't see you? So let's say as a monk you decide with your party a secrete "safeword" that when you yell in battle they close their eyes wouldn't that guarantee them safe from the effect?
I introduced a monk of long death, to my pcs. I made him a sort of bare knuckle psychopath. His fear ability, is just him threatening with the most horrific threats possible. After they each stabbed him... He still stood, with one hp. Epic mini boss
This monk is cool for more combat-light campaigns when you make WIS your primary stat instead of DEX. Or, if you're playing at level 11+ in a high lethality game and don't want to keep rolling up new characters. 😉Or you could try and build the full-immortality build (Half-orc, 1 level shadow sorcerer, then 11 levels of long death monk). Not my favourite monk, and monk is a lower-mid tier class on my personal "fun-o-meter." I still find it more fun than most fighters, lol!
I have a great idea vampire way of the long death monk just a absolute animal running through packs of bugbears with his speed, claws and teeth seems so fun anyone got any names for me to use for him
With Tasha's coming out soon, our focus will be primarily on that, but we do plan to cover UA classes/subclasses in the future yes! Thanks for watching!
Kinda feel like a Warlock could be good with this so you have more move pool when you don't want to have to long rest after spells. You can drain hp's and use the monk's abilities. Both Warlocks and Long Death monks are obsessed with death and have dark tendencies. Could make for quite an interesting evil character or someone who puts the party in positions that are not always ideal. ;)
I'm a big fan of monk and my favorite monk subclass is the UA way of mercy. I've not played this one because like you said too many of its skills are situational.
I'm seeing Noob Saibot. That said, I could also see a lizardfolk playing this class and fluffing it as just eating the flesh of the dead to regain health...
It’s weird; monk is definitely one of my favorite classes, and I love pretty much all the subclasses, but I always end up forgetting about them. I’m always like, “Oh, Long Death exists!” and “Oh, Sun Soul exists!”
I really like the flavor of this class. I think I’d place it on the lower side of B tier. It’s definitely not bad, but it does have some things that could be better. I think the capstone from long death would be great if the capstone from open hand weren’t so similar.
How does Mastery of Death interact with abilities that proc when you are reduced to 0 hit points. At the lower end of the spectrum gnoll’s blood frenzy ability, in the upper end, do spells like disintegrate and finger of death trigger their secondary effects before you can use this ability?
Sage advice says abilities like Half-Orc’s Relentless Endurance (Mastery of Death functions essentially the same) don’t allow things like disintegrate to happen since the ability changes the 0 to a 1 before the secondary effect happens. As written: “Relentless Endurance can turn the 0 into a 1 before the spell can disintegrate you.” Thanks for watching!
Quivering palm is superior in every way over Touch of the long death. ToLD needs an action to use, used at 3 KI points does 6d10 damage (3 if resisted), is not "storable" in a an enemy for several days. QP can be done while in a flurry of blows (even if require an action later to activate), KILLS OUTRIGHT at 3 KI points (or does 10d10 damage if resisted), and you can put it "into" an enemy for several days. Well, you said it in the video. Now this comment is moot.
Consider introducing yourselves, like names y’know? And while your information is really efficient, perhaps slow down just a tad (fella on the right, this is just a thought, not meant to offend 1:35 ) for those of us who may be a little slower 😅
I’m trying to think through a character that would use this subclass. I can’t think of much besides an edgy monk. I’m really not much of a fan of the SCAG subclasses.
I think that’s a problem with subclasses from the SCAG in general, nice flavor but kinda meh mechanics. Also with monks it’s tricky because every new subclass is competing with shadow and open hand.
