If long term energy storage is to become widespread, the cost needs to come down to about 5 cts per kWh, with 80% RTE or better. That's when solar/wind + storage starts to compete with nat gas fired power plants, and battery storage is well on its way to get there this decade. Currently the only price I see here is the 21 cts/kWh from 30:55. Can that cost come down a factor of 4x with any of these mechanical systems ?

For thermal applications yes, but an electric energy output can power a heat pump which can 4x the thermal output
