The building of Long-EZ N916WP. While cutting out my right lower aft engine baffle I inadvertently put a nice scratch on it. In lieu of messing around with trying to sand and buff it out to bring it back to its original satin look, I decided to spend a couple (meaning 3!) days to Engine Turn the aft-facing engine baffles (visible through the cowl opening). By the end of Day 1 I felt like crap and had a 48-hour bout of froggy throat/screaming headache/super achy all over man-cold that has seem to virtually disappear as fast as it came (and no, there wasn't drinking involved!).
My goal wasn't necessarily a perfect product right out of the gate, but rather a very acceptable finish that would do its job in hiding my dumb oops! Starting on the forward 2024 aluminum baffles with the disc I was using raised my expectations a bit, simply to then be lowered again when using the same method on 6061... which as a softer aluminum tends to show more streaks, or rings, when using the same type discs. In short, 6061 did not have as spiffy results as the 2024. But hey, this is all in the engine compartment, will be operational, and not exceedingly gross.
Overall, I'll say these dogs will hunt!
