In this followup video to our Long Hive review, John shows us how his bees are making themselves at home in the new digs. The long hive installation went great, and these girls have plenty of room to expand and grow. If you're looking for advice from a professional beekeeper about the long hive, you've come to the right place. 😊 🐝
Here's the link to the Long Hive installation/setup video:

In this video, John also installs Apivar Strips to kill the dreaded Varroa Mite that often infests the hive. Apivar's primary ingredient, Amitraz, is a substance which you should take care to handle appropriately. It can be harmful to humans, so please be careful to read the labels and understand the risks.
Have you tried the long hive setup? What did you think? Let us know in the comments how your hives are faring this year. We'd love to be a part of your beekeeping journey. Feel free to ask questions or lend advice. And lastly, if you haven't subscribed to our channel, would you? We appreciate you watching. Until we see you again, #RollThatBeautifulBeeFootage!
You'll see John feed the bees using Pro Sweet Liquid Feed, and several other items that you can purchase at our online store. Let us know if you're looking for something we don't have listed on the website. We supply everything you need to raise a successful hive.

I remember watching you do the install and wondering why you put so many foundation frames in the box. The “long”is built so you can add frames as you need them. In my experience in North Florida if you have a bunch of foundation with very few bees to patrol the frames, you will gib the hive beetles a place to come in and hang out. I also remember thinking that is a long trip to the bee feeder.

@@CentralBeekeepersSupply So far they like the long box! Every thing i got got SHB OIL TRAPS ON THEM ! Even the long box, Wax Moths, and SHB are bad in E. Texas ~ Only way i can have bees. The trap kills SHB, wax moths, mites, and there larva! The bees kicks them off the frames, and they fall threw the #8 hardware cloth, into the cooking oil, and Kills them. Very effective trap ~ i invented it > among other things as well

Hopefully she will fill out the frames with eggs soon. I got a late swarm and Hopefully they will be strong enough to get through the winter. I started them on better comb and feeding them also. Great video and good luck with them. Pistol didn't find his lizard today. 👍❤🐝🐶

People I have say first that this is my first season doing bees...Hive beetles have not been a problem. In fact the bees have been making propolis traps for them and killing them there. I've asked a couple of beekeepers, one with a hundred hives and another with less...hundred hive says never heard of it and less says that yes they can do this...Have you come across this?...
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 2 года назад
The bees will build up many kinds of defensive barriers to keep beetles out. It's one of the many mysteries of the honeybee, but yes - they can build little propolis traps!

Good video as always. I have some strong back issues. I have read pros and cons on these horizontals and appreciate this information. Could be an answer for me and others that can not or maybe struggling physically to continue Beekeeping. Thanks

Thank you much! Yes, the long hive definitely saves on the back strain. Not as much bending and twisting. Every little bit helps.

Sorry for the late reply. If I recall correctly, we were getting a pretty good nectar flow at that time.

Anyone ever mist their hive interior with brazilian red propolis supplement, It's not what they make it for but It should help with mites and beetles and shouldn't cause the colony problems. I'm just curious if anyone actually uses an organic preventative even if it might just boost resistance, It could be the golden ticket when all you really need is that tiny bit for them to pull through. I might just start one to test the theory.

John i had a observation why would she lay some drone eggs but nothing else.
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 2 года назад
Since the drones are under cap the longest, they will be staggered emerging she had those there when I transferred them in to long hive. Good question!

I know you said you saw the queen but I did not, now any evidence that she was there and in good shape. No eggs and no larvae would concern me. I think you have workers laying drones in a queenless hive. I am looking forward to an update in the spring. I really doubt that colony would make it to spring in a cold climate and if it is queenless it will not make it to spring in your climate.

I had a swarm I cought in May, hive has been going down hill.gave them some 1:1 sugar water on a ross round, they were robbed. Shut the hive down for 30 min. And activity went back to normal. Added a frame of brood from a strong hive and 2 days later, no bees. No dead bees just an empty box. Any ideas? I'm down now just had knee replaced 4 days ago.
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 2 года назад
Bees from the other hive that initially robbed them may have killed the queen in that colony. Brood from donor hive hatched and left with remaining bees of original colony, and I would suspect they did that because robbing typically resumes and creates a hostile environment that those bees were not willing to try and defend. Easier for them to leave nothing than starve there trying to rebuild without a queen. Thanks for the question!
@Foggyfighter

bloody frustrating to see all them larvas and still keep hearing them say, "there are no brood".

I'm late to the party, but knowing this was a late swarm I'm wondering if that was a virgin queen. They can do some stuff that doesn't make a lot of sense late in the season. Did she eventually start laying or did you have to re-queen that hive?

@@CentralBeekeepersSupply And you could do that by simply removing her from the hive (terminally) and let the hive raise an emergency queen, is that correct? Or is it too late in the season for that, in this case?
