This was an absolutely stellar day in the Western Long Island Sound for early November blackfish. Conditions couldn't have been better especially for doing underwater footage in deeper water. I am very thankful this day panned out the way it did, as I got on a good early slack tide bite, learned a lot from the underwater footage, and went home with fish to boot. I do hope there are more accessible days in the Sound for me on my kayak, but if I don't get out anymore this season, I will be happy to end it with this day of fishing. Enjoy and catch ya next time!

Thanks Scott! Yeah this day was amazing on so many levels, it’s funny because even with all the improvements I’ve tried to make to my underwater camera since, I really haven’t been able to capture the blackfish like this again. Gunna keep trying though! Keep up the great work on your channel too man 🤙

Thanks 👍 I totally agree its so much easier to watch when my kayak and I aren't getting rocked around and the rod tip is much easier to see with the smooth background. Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed this one!

Thanks a lot, haha it really was one of those days that just seemed to go my way. Yea I hear ya about the spear fishing, used to do quite a bit of that in FL but up here the water clarity is tough and when it is good enough to see it’s really cold, lol. Did you free dive or scuba mostly?
@FishinAccomplished

@@PeterRanieriII I snorkeled... and yeah, most of the time the visibility was not great... but when the water was clear, it was a lot of fun, especially for Blackfish. They're so inquisitive, they'll practically swim right up to you!

Great video man! I was surprised how tightly squeezed in that tautog was in the rocks. They have some incredible sense of smell or communication with each other. Come out of nowhere when a crab drops nearby.
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 3 года назад
Thanks Bob! I was thinking the same thing, almost like an eel haha I don’t know how they squeeze in like that. Maybe the sound of the camera/crab/weight dropping down the water column gives off a sound or he could sense some commotion from his buddies nearby, but yea I agree it’s really cool to see him/her do that. These fish really are so curious and so much fun to catch, I really hope their numbers continue to strengthen in our area.

@PeterRanieriII 3 года назад
@@JS441979 It is very good! Has a great meaty/flaky texture so there's a lot you can do with it. I don't think this recipe has a specific name or anything but it's pretty much just a variation of a white wine and herb recipe for any baked white fish. herb butter recipes are also great for this fish but I tried to be a little healthier on this one ;)

@PeterRanieriII 3 года назад
Thanks man! Your on the right track, I am close to Huntington bay. Without being specific, its between Hempstead bay and Smithtown bay. Pretty much that whole area has the same geography though, all you have to do is get out near any of the points where there's some marked boulders and just explore around those and you will essentially be fishing the same locations I fish in the Sound.

I honestly haven’t tried for blackfish in the sound during the spring yet, but I definitely will this April, pretty sure they will be there. Correct, theyr at the bridge but the bite isn’t as aggressive and many of the females are fat with eggs

should you take the crab shell off or can you keep it on?
@PeterRanieriII

I think it’s good to take it off at first when your trying to get the bite going but after they start biting it may be better to leave the shell on for that bigger one to take it.

What pound test line were you using and what size lead did you have on?
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 3 года назад
For the underwater setup, I have it on 30lb braid attached to 40lb leader but then all the terminal tackle including the rig weight (5oz) and hooks are attached with 20lb leader so that in case I get snagged it should break below the camera, (in theory). When I'm actually fishing I use 20lb braid to 30lb leader and 1oz or 1.5oz jig for this depth. Thanks for watching!
@ajlewis9454
@ajlewis9454 3 года назад
@@PeterRanieriII theres no better fishing then using light tackle it makes it more of a sport. We go striper fishing using ultralight poles with 6lb test now thats sport fishing at its best. Anyone can real in a fish using heavy tackle!
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 3 года назад
@@ajlewis9454 I couldn't agree more! It's so much more fun to let the fish take some drag! I get when your structure fishing you have to use a little heavier leader and get em out of it faster than normal but yea for stripers in areas where there's not too much structure, 6lb would be awesome!
@ajlewis9454

what do you mean by fuzz
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 3 года назад
Great question. I rarely ever mark blackfish on my sonar, for whatever reason (maybe related to their swim bladders or because they're usually hiding in the rocks) they just don't really show up like other fish do. Instead you have to look for what I call "fuzz" but its pretty much just an irregularity that indicates a hard object with growth/activity around it. You'll see the color spread of yellow to red is more spread out. See these two other images for example. imgur.com/a/sruADnh imgur.com/a/63M3OSP
