Historically, microglia were viewed only as the brain’s immune cells that respond to brain injury or infections. While this is true, recent research has shown that microglia play important roles in responding to and regulating neuronal network activity, and adaptations of the brain to physiological challenges such as exercise and intellectual challenges. Microglia are increasingly recognized for their roles in neuroplasticity including learning and memory and regulation of emotions. Professor Long-Jun Wu is working at the forefront of research on microglia and their roles in normal brain function and in disorders such as chronic pain and Alzheimer’s disease. In this episode I talk with Dr. Wu about his research and its implications for brain health and new therapeutic approaches for neurological disorders.

I love these conversations. I’m a hospital based internist and consultant for Orthopedics, Trauma, and Neurosurgery divisions and have been focusing on pain systems (including fascial systems), analgesia, autonomic functions, gastrointestinal disorders along with integrating neuromusculosketal medicine. I cherish these conversations given my conscience approaches to addressing clinical problems in a more comprehensive way. This is enriching. Thank you 🙏🏼.

Gosh, what a super informative and enthusiastic talk, Texas must be thrilled to have your guest leading their extensive new facilities. As one with an over 65yr brain, which suffer consequences of systemic autoimmunity - 7 yrs now of psoriatic ‘arthritis’ - I can add my own situation to that of the miltoitudes of injured/aging/immune-challenged sitting on edge of seats, rooting for this researchers progress. Many thanks to both of you kind scientists.
