Today, I take out a Mercedes Benz CL600 and talk about the power of the V12 - both literally, and figuratively. What makes it special, and does it still rule in the age of electric?

Brilliant send off to the beloved V12. We are going backwards instead of forwards imho. Just like the concorde was a technical marvel. I agree with you James that the engine is what gives the car the character. Just wish Toyota hurry up and build that hydrogen powered engine, which will still keep the car's distinctive character while helping with the environment.

I had one of those - by far the best car I've ever interacted with. What I remember most vividly was the sheer size of it - it looked like a regular car when parked alone, but seemed gargantuan when compared to 'regular' traffic. It's not often you see eye-to-eye with minivan drivers in a two-door coupe. The engine had an unbeatable rythm and sound to it too... will definitely get one again. And always the CL, the cabin is much more comfortable than an equivalent S600.

I have always considered the engine to be the heart of a car, the V12 XJS and the 4.0 might be the same car but they dont have the same character, and thats what is missing from the current crop of EV's, they are the soylent green of cars, it makes no difference what the make is, the experience is pretty much identical.

Respectfully, it wasn't that Enzo didn't want a Ferrari with less than 12 cylinders, it was that he needed somewhere to put his son's 2L V6 for it to qualify for racing. So he made the Dino brand (named after is deceased son Alfredino) and the rest is history. Ferrari has had racing engines in all manner of configurations in ferrari-branded cars. Dino was all in honor of his son. Jason Cammisa has a video on this exact subject.

Love the format, James. It'd be nice to see more of it - for the V10, for example. I have just one correction - that Enzo didn't want a Ferrari badge on a V6 car is a common misconception. I don't remember the exact reasons that particular car had to be Dino badged but it was named after his firstborn son - Alfredo (or Alfredino), who died very young and Enzo was known to visit his grave every day. The engine itself was originally an idea of Alfredo. A Ferrari with less than 12 cylinders not being a "real Ferrari" was a concept pushed by people who needed to inflate their egos - and not by Enzo himself. Not to mention that a lot of people who have experienced the Dino V6 think very highly of it and the cars sell for incredibly high prices today.

Brilliant overview of an automotive high point. I’d like to add a few points. The flat twelves for me are the most exciting. I know noise is all about firing order but, Ferrari flat twelves and in racing, 917 Porsche are the pinnacle of mechanic symphonies. A shout to the v8. What makes 60’s and 70’s American muscle cars so memorable are the engines. Musically, they are the bench mark of car sound. Blasting their way through an old school 3 speed auto or spinning there wheels through 4 speed manual shifts will keep me intoxicated for decades. Long live massive mechanical horsepower.

Regarding very small displacement V12 engines, Honda RA272 F1 car (1965) used a 1.5 l V12 (230 bhp between 11,500-12,000 rpm and by the end of the season it was reportedly producing 240 bhp). Another one is Ferrari Colombo V12 1.5 l engine, used in the 125s race car and in the 125 F1 car (1948), Ferrari's first F1 car.

I love the video, it truly is a love story for the V12, I just have one gripe. Ferrari didn't name the Dino Dino because he felt no Ferrari should have a "lesser" engine than the V12, rather due to the fact that it was made in honor of his late son Alfredo whose nickname was Alfredino, shortened Dino. That story that it was called Dino because of a V6 and later a V8 engine has no basis in fact. Cammisa did an amazing Revelations video on the Dino which I recommend you watch. It dismantles the theory.

Having owned a number of V12 cars in various guises over my 60 years of Petrolheadedness, (I just invented a word!), I absolutely concur with you James; and still would except for one thing. After my last V12 (a Toyota), I needed a car quickly. Now, I've never been one to buy in a hurry, but luck was on my side when a pristine Lexus LS400 came my way. I've driven Lexus products ever since, my current car being a 2006 Lexus GS300 SE-L. It's not a V12 - it's a 3 litre V6. It doesn't drink a lot - about half what a V12 would. It won't do 180 mph _ but thanks to my local Lexus dealer, it will do just under 170 mph! And it's smooth...like all Lexus products, it's smooth and silent. (I like silent, it lets me creep up on people and zip past before they realise what just happened. I'm sticking with Lexus now, I just love them. I've got a C216 CL65 V12 with a bit of mild tweaking, and I am not exaggerating to say the engine is absolutely glorious. Radio and MP3 and CD player have stopped working, but I'm not complaining at all! 🎶🎶🎶

Good decision to let the outro music play longer. It's amazing how well it suits the V12. What a tribute.

22:32 I think when it comes to EVs you can tell the difference between car enthusiasts and people who aren't but think they know what Car Enthusiasts care about, because those people only talk about the power figures, the 0-60 time where the Car Enthusiasts who also like EVs don't, they talk about feel and sensation, because in an ICE car, it's the sensation of an engine screaming/wailing/snarling/roaring combined *with* the numbers that get our blood flowing and tickle the ticklish bits.

I’ve been working on my Merc S600 V12 including a full rebuild on my channel - it’s a lovely motor and still relatively simple to work on 😊 that p51 mustang sounds gorgeous!

Drove a BMW 850 once. My cousin used to buy and sell top shelf stuff. He let me drive it on the condition of you break it, you bought it. Didn't have the bollox to hammer it down a Northern Irish back road, Very comfy and smooth.

Fantastic video, a tinge of sadness not just that we are losing new IcE cars but will it come to a point that we can’t even enjoy our classics guilt free for fear of warming up the planet. 😮

I half agree James. The XJ12 was a beauty, silky smooth. I have to say, I still prefer the sound of a V8, just makes the old ticker beat just a little quicker! Keep up the good work James, content recently has been brilliant.

I agree! I blame becoming a car nut in America in the 60s. To me, nothing beats the sound of a Chevy big block in a Can-Am car. No doubt my preferences would be different if I had come of age on the other side of the Atlantic.

@@Acceleronics I also have a love of the American V8, I currently own a S550 GT. This is a result of the television programmes I grew up with here in the U.K.

Thanks - it seemed only appropriate that I discuss the other uses of the engine, as in many ways the car was a sideshow to them

Owned a CL65 10 years ago when the value of them was much lower ( back then some car minded friends questioned my purchase because of the reliability issues that seem to come attached with them ) however it quickly changed there minds with its class refinement and performance it was honestly incomparable with anything else i had ever driven, the shove to the back of the seat never got old torque was ridiculous, i paid £23k for mine it was a 42k mile example, sold it 2 years later with 51k on it for £26k ( and I was chuffed at the time ) it was reliable and needed nothing in my ownership other then undersealing before i picked up the car and a full service before i sold it, highly recommend if your pockets are deep enough, your mechanical skills are good or your just plain brave ( like me )

The sound a V12 can make is almost the most important aspect to me. The V10s of F1 falls short compared to the older V12 powered cars when just listening to them, for example. An interesting detail I've noticed over the years is how three-pots, V6s and V12s have something in common when you listen to them. V6 and V12 having something in common isn't so hard to figure out, but I was a bit surprised the first time I really revved an inline-3 and heard some of that familiar sound I recognized from a V6 or a V12. Perhaps having cylinders in multiples of three is what creates the effect.

I was hoping youd stitch in a clip of the chally showing off the CV12. That sound is just nuts.
