Fresh from the Showcase here at SwissWatchExpo. I am talking about a selection of watches we have today with extra long power reserves, which I think is such a neat complication and incredibly practical too. We have a wide variety. I'm mostly sticking to watches with a power reserve of north of seven days, one week, which is really longer than most people would need, but it's a great complication. It really does highlight the technical mastery of making some of these mechanical watches. Starting here with something kind of simple but beautiful. We've got two examples of the IWC Portofino. IWC is a brand that does incorporate long power reserves into many of their models. Design-wise, I just love them because they're so simple, very elegant and dressy looking, but they're also very large. I'm actually wearing the version in black right now, and we also have a beautiful one in silver and with a blue dial. They all have a second hand at six o'clock, which is very easy to read. A very simple dial layout which really highlights the beautiful color here, and with a small date window at three o'clock.
Of course, what really makes these what they are, is the power reserve indicator here at nine. This goes all the way up to eight days, which is an incredibly long time. These particular movements are all hand-wound mechanical. So they're not going to be automatic, but I think this is very good because if you have a power reserve indicator that goes up a full eight days, it really does tell you exactly how often you need to wind the watch. An automatic self winding movement, not really as practical when you know exactly how much time you've got left before these wear out. I think it's a beautiful watch and this is something that's really practical and great for someone with a watch collection, who constantly swaps out what watches they wear and has a lot of variety in their wardrobe.
This is an excellent complication, and that's going to apply to any of these watches today. If you've got a pretty large collection, or if you're wearing a different watch every day, consider something with an extra long power reserve. Because it's going to be one of the more convenient pieces in your collection. Moving on here to another beautiful example in stainless steel. We have the IWC Big Pilot, which I think is a great sporty watch. It does still have the same brand DNA that makes IWC so great - large case, simple design, a very classic round shape. The first thing you'll notice here is this massive crown here that you use to wind the watch. This watch of course, was originally made for pilots. Pilot's watches all meant to be large. This even goes to the Rolex Air King, which was big when it came out.But this one's big by any and all standards, even modern ones.
The great part about this extra long power reserve that goes all the way up to eight days, this one's located at three and it's circular, is that really with every single turn of this crown, you're adding a lot of power to this watch. It's a very large crown and every single motion does really crank it up. You got a full eight days. This one does have an automatic movement here. Not only does it have an incredibly long power reserve, but it'll stay wound for as long as you're wearing it. If this is an everyday watch for you, you might literally have to forget about it before this thing ever runs out of power. Of course, if you're a bigger guy such as myself, you like a large case, it's going to hold up to the size of your wrist and it's still going to look very beautiful and dressy.
I think this watch dresses up and down a little better than the Portofinos do, but it's still a beautiful case design and really does highlight the technical aspect of it. We have a few more elegant pieces here. I'd like to move on to.
