How could any, but even 2 people, dislike these videos. They are the best series, course, available (Rex has donated hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of his time to help us, you, me, all of us. And he does it I without the slightest bit of arrogance. Very nicely done Rex, they are favorites for a lot us. Thank you.

you should teach at a community college somewhere, and have this as a course for a full semester. i'd be the first one to sign up for the class on just learning how set up and use a scope for long range target shooting. great knowledge, other wise wouldn't know. thanks.

Yes, sir. We will learn to apply all this to the optics once we finish exploring ballistics. With the 20moa tilted bases, simply zero the rifle at 100m with the base installed and adjust as needed beyond that. See the sighting in video for full detail :-)

Thanks for watching. Mil turrets are usually in nice even 1/10 increments and are almost as fine as the commonly used 1/4 moa clicks. The main thing is to have our reticle and turret adjustments match each other so that we don't have to convert angular values in the field. If we use MOA turrets, we should use a MOA based reticle, if we use a Mil Dot scope, its much easier to use matching Mil based turrets. Either system is fine, as long as we don't have different units all mixed up.

"If you made it this far in the series you should be ok" Me: 🙄, I just came for this episode
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
Great question. The answer is that your eye will be able to distinguish objects at the exact same resolution irrespective of what units are demarcated in the reticle, the accuracy of your estimation will rest on your spatial perception and your ability to determine your target size with respect the units marked, whichever they are. So both are equally suited for ranging purposes. The primary debate lies in which units offer the fine adjustments on your scope turrets.

Unfortunately, there are no books that address these optical parameters that I am aware of... however if you refer to long range shooting or military sniping in general??? Yes. The FM 23-10 is a good source to have. The Complete .50 cal Sniper Course by Dean Michaelis is a great book to read although its too big to carry and use in the field.

Last year I picked up a Leupold Mk4 ER/T 6.5-20x50mm FFP M5 TMR ($1300 with shipping at Big Supply). This year I saved up for a Bushnell HDMR H59 FFP reticle at LaRue with a 1 piece mount. Both are excellent, and I love that they mil mil. I fins myself always switching scopes on my guns. H59 has helped me tremendously with my longer shots. Hoping to fully use them to their potential this year.

Hey man, I can't believe this whole playlist exists. Its seriously a gift and a piece of divinity here... I discovered your channel like 4 days ago or so and Ive watched up to this point in this series so far. Im primarily an LR 308 shooter on and off as my main rifle that I've had since 2005, but I've been shooting my whole life in general. I'm in the process of building a 338 Lapua system and Im seriously drawn to the new AR platform semi auto 338's. I saw the video of the Noreen you did and that one is tempting me along with the S.W.O.R.D MK18 ( short stroke piston/gas hybrid). However, since these are still long and bulky rifles despite their relative light weight, I am mainly considering the "takedown" "suitcase" Kivaari 338 Lapua AR platform rifle. This rifle supposably is guaranteed sub MOA even after being taken apart and back together. With this system along with my Dual sport KTM I see myself being able to travel anywhere In North and South America should I ever need to with an extreme long range 338 sass in a backpack.

Awesome series! Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge. I intend on eventually taking your classes. You've got me talked into a Schmidt and Bender PMii 5-25x56 I think. Tough decision as a left hand shooter, I hope I can make it work. There are two different turret systems the old style I see in your videos with the yellow and a new MTC with locking. Please advise.

For small targets like prairie dogs at 650m, your application may warrant a slightly higher magnification. Depending on your budget I would go for one the more rugged 1st Focal Plane Variable optics that I recommend in the LR optics selection videos. Once you get through those videos, you will understand all the different LR optical parameters and you will be able to select the perfect scope for your apps. :-) You will have multiple good choices to select from. Too much to list here.

Yeah, I know, 12moa per turn seems a little goofy. 15moa per turn is quite common, but its nice to have a nice even number like 10 or 20moa per turn to keep it easy.

I am very new to getting into long range shooting. I bought an LWRC REPR a few years ago not expecting to shoot farther than 200 yards regularly and 5-600 max. I wanted a piston .308 AR style rifle with a side charging handle and more money than sense. Now I want to shoot out to 800-1000 yards max. It seems to be that MOA scopes can have finer adjustments than MRAD ones. 1/10 MRAD = .3438 MOA which is larger than 1/8 or even 1/4 MOA. But the range finding seems a lot smoother with MRADs with meters. I wanted to be a sniper as a kid, but I had to become a finance fobbit because you have to have red-green color vision in the infantry.

I use 3.44 as a quick conversion factor to change Mil-radians to MOA. So if you have a Mil-dot reticle and MOA turrets just use 3.44 to convert. The 3.44 is from the following: Yards: one M-rad is 3.6”, one MOA is 1.047". 3.6÷1.047=3.4383954154727. Round to 3.44. Meters: one M-rad is 10cm, one MOA is 2.91cm. 10÷2.91=3.4364261168384. Round to 3.44. So if the spotter suggests one Mil right for windage I twist the MOA windage turret right to 3.5 MOA. While it may not be the same, there is only a millionth of inch difference in actual impact. Not enough difference to worry about. A ¼-MOA turret allows a position of x.0, x.25, x.5, x.75 and repeats. 3.44 is not available so just round to the nearest click, in this case 3.5-MOA to match 1-Mil. I prefer Mil-dot scope reticles to calculate range to target. Whichever angular unit of measurement I use for scope turret adjustment, MOA's or Mils, makes no difference. Besides the US army used MOA's decades ago. I do like those round dot Mildots. Just easier to work with than those football shaped, oval dots. FYI: NATO uses Mil-radians based on the NATO standard of 6400 mils to circle. True Mil-radians are 3283 mils to a circle. 6400-mils has a smaller arc for accuracy for mortars and artillery. Former 11C mortar maggot here. Spent a long time on that M-30, four-deuce mortar back in the days of the dinosaur and disco. Rex, thank you for the Sniper 101 series. Your work is making a lot of better riflemen that can stand up for Uncle Sam if any aggressor is stupid enough to dare to invade the good ol’ USA.
@TiborasaurusRex

The NF would be on top of these choices for sure, then comes the Vortex Razor HD, then the Bushnell. The NXS is a great choice for F class known distance target apps - however if you plan to use the reticle for traverse or ELV hold-offs in the field you will realy want a 1st focal plane model - in which case I would suggest the F1 models over the NXS.

I think that 1mil @ 100 yards would be exactly 3.6". Arc length = radius x radian angle subtended. 100 yd x 36 in/yd x 0.001 rad = 3600 x .001 = 3.6", a very slight difference but one that might make a difference at extreme long ranges.

Once a person learns and accepts the Metric system, math becomes 2nd nature, and much easier to do 'in-head' calculations, as everything is based on 1, 10, 100, 1000, etc. It works equally well for weight, volume [fluids, gasses] distance, etc. Ex: 1ml or 1 CC of water weighs 1 gram, making it possible to calc. liquids with weight or volume. Once the imperial system [Lbs, oz] falls below the oz measurement, grams are used. It's quite flawed. Another excellent video.

Got a lot of mechanics with little undrstnding of science or the why's. May I poste a question on angls of measrmnt preference? MOA's r new to me & while trained on Mils, the MOA's due seem to provide a greater capacity for adjustments over the .10 mil. Why the general rec for mils on this video? Baruch Hashem

Hey Rex, long time shooter new to scopes and bases. I have a Leupold Mark 4, 15 MOA scope base on my Remington 700 .308. I zero at 100 yards and shoot out to 400- 500 yards. I haven't shot it since installing the new scope base and now I'm worried about my total MOA adjustment. Using the cheap scope that came on the rifle will I even be able to keep a 100 yard zero with that 15 MOA scope base? I do plan on getting a much better scope in the near future.

tw203809 Get a primary arms FFP. FFP = front/first focal plane. it means when you zoom in, the crosshairs get bigger. meaning, the mil dots get bigger and is more accurate. The measurements stay the same rather than 2nd focal point. $229 damn near just as good as a 500$ scope. Every time you zoom in a scope to see better, the cross hairs stay the same. That way, the mil dot still represents 3 inches at 100 yards. ;) It works just as well as a $1000 scope, but obviously not as nice. still good for a new shooter. check out military arms channel $1000 rifle for 1000 yards.
