Long Range 101 Part 69 - Bullet RPM & Overstabilization

Rifle bullets often spin at over 200,000 RPM! This generates a tremendous 'centrifugal force' which can have some interesting effects on a bullet's external ballistic performance. In this video, Rex explains overstabilization and how it stiffens up a bullet's spin axis to where it experiences a loss in tractability which can lead to increased bullet yaw and spin drift at extreme long ranges.
Thank you for your donations to the Rex Reviews Project! We hope these videos continue to be a great help to you all.

I'm also struggling spiritually so I have been watching a lot of Rex's new content... But it's nice to take a relaxing detour through all the stuff that originally attracted me to this channel. I just keep in mind; whatever happens at the end of it all... GOD WINS.

Its working on my end. Sometimes it won't work until the entire page is loaded. Give it a little more time and it should work like a champ. Thanks so much for the support, sir!

Hmmmm.... seems to be working on my end. Sorry about the problem, sir. Wish I knew how to fix it. The best thing you can do to help out with our operation is actually to share these videos with everyone you know. Spread the word! Donations are very helpful, but not by any means the main objective :-) Maybe try again after a while... seems to be working for other folks.

Great videos, sir! Very informative! I started out watching random videos you've posted but quickly learned that I needed to just start at the beginning... so I did that... and here's where I am, now... I shoot the small, fast bullets so some of what you're saying doesn't apply directly to me, but I still learn a lot... Thanks for your time and effort in making these videos! Sincerely!

I've never disciplined myself to the exact science but I have yeeted m855 1100m in the middle of nowhere by the seat of my pants... I often go out there at the end of the day and dig up or pick up the bullets... With a basic 1:7 twist, I've noticed the "waist" and the tail of bullets take damage when clipping rocks... kinda like an aircraft landing rear-gear first... The bullet is stabilized so much that it maintains the barrel axis as it ballistically drops... A hole in cardboard is often oblong as the bullet is falling "belly-first" (best way for me to explain it for a spinning bullet). I'm totally getting my science fix watching these as I've done this the layman way... so my speculations are falling in line and it's awesome.

T ' Rex- Sweet Graphics on this one. I see the donations button is helping toward the "multi-million dollar studio" LOL... Seriously, those graphics were nice. I usually can follow your commentary well, but graphics help tremendously, when talking about such complex phenomenon. Most need a visual aid in understanding such things, myself included. Looking forward to (spin drift), which I assume will be the biggest player in LRS, when taking into account such minor cause/ and effect. Be Well, JMV

Hey Rex, I have a .300 Rum with a 1:8 twist. Would the Barnes 165gr bullet fired at 3380fps cause excessive wear compared to 180gr? Also would this load be overstabilized for shots at long range?

So what would be preferred for 800 yard accuracy, a 308 ,175 smk with 1:10 twist or 1:12 twist? Shooting approx 2500 fps. Will the difference in the two ratios be noticable?

Hi Rex, great videos! I have a 8 twist .243, do you think this is to much twist for 105 amax? They group well out to 300 yards, havent had the chance to go beyond that. Im curious if I might experience some overspin issues at 1000 yards...
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 10 лет назад
That is about perfect for the 105s in .243... it will give you a little bit of a safety cushion when shooting through dense air, but shouldn't give you any overspin.
@DonziGT230

Have you found evidence to support that bullets will indeed stay nose up on decent? This is first I've heard about it, or any other negatives to over-stabilization in reference to accuracy.

Rex love the videos, been hooked for hours. I do have a question and I'm sure you went over it or you will but, is there a formula for muzzle velocity between atmospheric densities, I'm at 650ft so i would make my primary table 1000ft or 29, i was just curious if altitude density would affect MV or if that was all external ballistics affecting it after the shot. thanks again. I'm currently shooting a 7mm with krieger barrel 180gn berger and a huskemaw scope that i got when i didn't know as much as i do now, However i do like the scope and have had great luck with it out to 1200 yds but I'm wanting more precision. Keep the vids coming God bless

Rex, first of all, thanks for all you've put into these videos! I had a question about something in this video not related to its topic. At the 0:57 mark, the USO scope pictured has colored markings on the EREK knob, do you happen to know what they are for?

So then why does the USMC use 20 inch barrel M-16s with a 1/7 twist? I guess they are not shooting beyond 300 meters or so?

In the formula for RPM, the Twist Rate, is it put in and 1/7 for 1:7 twist rate?
@redneck2665
@redneck2665 10 лет назад
I can't remember where I herd this it was on tv, Progressive twist barrels, starts at 1-15 Twist and ends in 1-9 Twist in 24 inches of barrel. Said to get the bullet to take spin earlier in the barrel ( they called it bullet skid ) and the design promotes Twist acceleration so when it leaves the barrel the twist rate is still accelerating to near 1-7 is that good or is it just marketing?

So I bought a 20" aac-sd rem 700 .308 with 1/10 twist am I screwed ?
@ajramon4770
@ajramon4770 4 года назад
not really you would just have to experiment with which bullets give you best performance as the smaller the weight of the bullet the more twist. generally speaking, the barrel will work best for smaller lighter .308 bullet like your 150's.

What happens when you fire your .308 rated at 1:10 out of a 1:12 barrel?
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 10 лет назад
fester2251 Less gyroscopic stability at long range can result in greater dynamic stability... striking the proper balance between these two is the trick at ELR.

Uhm, no offense - but why not just do the math? For the most part, Tibo already spelled it out anyway: A .308 Win at around 2700 fps with a 1/10 twist leaves the barrels at close to 200k rpm (2700 x 720 / 10 = 194400). Time in flight will typically be less than or just above one second for ranges
