In Canada the SR+ is just under $50,000 (because of a $5000 federal incentive) which is isn't too bad, but what sucks is the LR is $65,000 because it doesn't have the incentive. 😭 The problem is it is borderline necessary to have the LR in Canada because of winter range loss (heat and snow driving inefficiencies) and you basically need AWD for driving in snow.
I agree! I'm probably going to buy a model 3 in 2020. Just hoping JT will give the $5000 (or more) across the board. That $15,000 more for the AWD LR is hurting me :(
Exactly, that's what happens when people vote for idiots like Rob Ford "buck a beer" first thing he did was took away 14 k incentive. I was saving up to buy the model 3 when he took the incentive away. Honestly like you said if they had even the 5 grand incentive for the LR I'd buy it, but at this moment I just can't pay 65K+ for a LR, and the SR+ just doesn't have enough range for Canada. Problem is many people are unaware of EVs. the noise pollution, the deadly poisonous smoke and everything. If we all pushed provincial government and federal government to do more we wouldn't be in this situation, Because as you know it's not just about cost saving. It's about having cleaner air that we can breath.
@@mcseventy6 Just so you know don't expect anything amazing. You pretty much just getting a web browser. Which does not work awesome unless you're on Wi-Fi anyway. Over the air update still asked me to connect to Wi-Fi.
Being an SR+ owner I can say I do wish I had the budget for the LR model. The sound system is big for me and I agree that the SR+ isn’t bad but I drove the LR and it was amazing. Most of the time the speed thing isn’t really a big deal but LR is more exciting. All in all I love my car and hope in a few years to upgrade to a more cushy model haha. Whatever version you get you’ll love, the rest is nitpicking. Great comparison vid thanks.
It’s funny how this aged: SR+ got and still can get most upgrades: Faster charging, browser added, netflix, spotify added, acceleration upgraded, later upgrade/buy rear seat heaters. I’m glad I got the SR+ mainly after buying. The difference is better used in Tesla stock
Look, the Masterplan has always been centered toward building that 35’000$ average Joe Model 3. She is actually the star of Tesla ´s lineup. If the vision is right, the M3 SR+ could very well become one of the best selling cars in history, all brands included. According to the plan, all other models serve to generate the financial leverage to be able to mass produce the M3 SR+. Knowing this, why would anyone think that Tesla would leave out its SR+ customers from Tesla ´s best features. In fact, recent history shows otherwise: The SR+ is gaining more and more features, slowly catching up on the LR (connectivity, power boost, internet browser, Spotify, etc). I bought a SR+ 2 months ago and I have just felt as though I am being cherished by Tesla. In 2019, their whole strategy is centered around this car. Don’t worry, go for it! It’s a steal!!!!
Pretty good video, BUT the lights in the footwell are included in SR+ it's pure software not hardware. And the degradation of the battery really is not a factor. After around 300k miles you lose about 10% so maybe 30 miles max. Not 70...and this is after like 10 years minimum unless you drive over 100 miles every single day.
Elon has stated that he would rather have people buy the SR+ than the LR because of Tesla’s battery production capabilities. Therefore, I would not expect Tesla to disincentivize buying a SR+ more than they are doing now. (i.e. disabling connectivity)
I like to stop every 3 hours on road trips, so I time it so that my stops are near a supercharger. Sometimes I just top up to what I need, others times I grab something to eat and fully charge. All in all, I have not had any issues with road trips.
Omg I am in the exact same boat.....I want FSD but I also don’t want my tesla to be dumbed down....the reason I want a Tesla is because shouldn’t the car you drive at least be as smart as your phone? ......I think it should
I saw a video where the older model 3s didn't have the panorama glass roof, I don't know if that was a regional thing or what, But if they do that to the current standard range model I would have to upgrade to the long range
Same here in Australia. Long range is approx $AU 23,000 dearer than the standard range plus. This is due to the exchange rate difference ($1 AUS = $0.67 US) and 10% GST (Federal sales tax) and a 33% luxury car tax. All up (ie on the road) a long range Model 3 starts at approx $AU 95,000 in Australia!! Yes it is very expensive here!!
Also our governments here in Australia, both State and Federal, are, sadly, fairly backward when it comes to encouraging the purchase of full EV’s, or indeed, hybrids. Neither government provides any sort of financial incentive ( tax credits or rebates) to promote their take-up, unlike the governments in North America, UK and Europe. Despite this, Teslas are quite popular here in Australia, relatively speaking, being the largest selling EV by far.
When I bought mine the LR was 9 $$grand more than the SR+ so I got the SR+. If I had to do it again I would get the LR because no one told me you're not supposed to charge to 100% all the time. Also, it takes a lot longer to charge up that last 10%. It kind of BS they don't let you know this on the Tesla website when you purchased. I found out after I got the car and went to charge it. The car itself says hey don't charge to 100% all the time on the screen.
Hi Travis ! - indeed a pity you didn't know this. In fact it's worse. They advise, to look after the battery properly, that one should not (often) charge above 80% and not empty the battery to under 30%, which effectively means that one has exactly half of the advertised battery capacity (under the most suitable conditions, of course). I find it amazing that this is so very rarely mentioned in these videos and the comments underneath.
Also I think the Standard+ charges max at ~7.2kW via L2 charger (AC) versus, Long Range charges at ≥11kW via L2 charger (AC). this is a noticable difference.
Like you mentioned Time has moved on! And at the moment after update 10 the SR+ has a web browser, NetFlix & RU-vid, Streaming services & Spotify just like the premium models. It still doesn't have the satellite option on maps though & neither LR or SR+ owners have yet to be asked to pay for the service.
I think this video misses the target completely. It focuses on superficial differences while the real differences obviously is connected to how the two will fare in a long drive eg. 400-600miles on the highway. The different sizes not only reduces the lap length but might reduce the average charging speed in miles/min. I watched this full length to find out these things but got served crap about interior and sound. A total waste of time.
Hey i appreciate ur content, but really use some common sense. WHy would Tesla lock out standard + customers. That would lower the value they bring + lower their profits + lowers customer satisfacton. Makes no sense.. Smarten up my main man, just see between the lines. The auto pilot now is included in all, no more 5k payment. Also they made the model 3 different now with the 2021 model that I ordered last week. Ill be one of the first customer who get the new model 3. Chrome deletes are included now too. Anyway, so to respond. Ofc the standard + clients will be able to benefit from all the important features, there might be some less relevant to give the long ranged clients the idea they getting extras to rationalize their decision to overpay. It's all about image. Tesla wants clients to feel satisfied and not ripped off, yet wants to give as much value to get loyal customers.
model3 SR+ will be assembled in China next year, that means the price`s going to reduce a lot. thx for your video, couldn`t be more agree. lack of budget, so i ordered the SR+.
The floor lights is not a Hardware-issue, but software deactivated. My sr+ floor lights sometimes blink at entering. So only software....more over since v10.0 you get cellular webbrowser, spotify, and tuneIn....( in europe) more to come....im happy with my sr+, best value and it's getting better and better.....
Heated back seats are already built into the SR+ but not enabled. Now you can unlock it for one time of $300 from Tesla. Hopefully, instead of paying the full 7000 amount for the self driving feature, it becomes a subscription option in the future.
Great video derailing what’s included or missing from each model. I personally just ordered a 2018 mid range simply because it had premium interior and 200 miles. I was torn between a brand new SR+ with FSD and a LR model but found a great deal.
Audi changes more then $99 a year for their LTE service and they don't offer any of the features that Tesla does nor do they offer over the air software upgrades.
I just ordered the long range yesterday without the full self driving. Exactly for the reason you mentioned. I will decide later to buy it if it is more perfect and the regulation in Europe is more clear. So I definitely agree with your video. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, this is a real issue for Europeans. Germany seems pretty progessive in terms of autonomous driving, but why would I pay for a service now that might never be fully functional within possible timeframes that I will be using the car? Perhaps in five years there will be more little kids and I'll need something bigger, and for many this type of question is extremely relevant.
Stop editing the audio of the video - it's very unsettling to hear you talk with these artifical short or no pauses between sentences. I stopped the video half-way.
I think there is a difference in the electrical motor(s) also. Induction is the better choice, but the ‘budget’ models receive the permanent magnet motor, which seems inferior. Jason from Engineering Explained mentioned this in his video: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XzspO4-T7t4.html
Drew I think dont think the m3 is gonna lose 70 miles of range. Tessloop has a model X that has been driven for more than 350,000 miles and they only super charged it. Which is not that great for the battery. Even after such abuse the model x only lost about 32 miles of Range from an initial 248 miles. And the batteries in the m3 are obviously better so 70 miles is the worst to worst case scenario
Great commentary on the extra benefits of the better model. But also I think the comparison between ranges is more significant than one expects. A naive comparison might be to just look at the ratio, so 310 is about 30% more range than 240. But what you really want to know is the usable range before you get serious range anxiety. I generally avoid allowing my range to drop to 50 miles. Another consideration is that it's good to avoid a full charge to protect the battery. For me, these two considerations don't stack since they tend to be mutually exclusive. For daily use, range anxiety is irrelevant, and on road trips I go ahead and charge to 100% So either way, I subtract 60 miles as a buffer. After subtracting 60, it's 250 vs 180, so effectively the long range has about 40% more usable range. That's a big difference. From personal experience, I would say that around 300 miles is the threshold where an EV has convenience parity with ICE.
I think you did a good job with this video Drew. It's not super easy to go about finding all these differences that you pointed out in the video. I don't think a lot of people really do understand all the differences when trying to decide which one to get. I myself went with the SR+ and am very happy with my decision. I don't care much about the connectivity stuff. I actually would have liked the extra speed the the long range offers, but I don't think it justifies the cost difference. Neither is mind glowingly fast, like ludicrous mode, so that's really why I opted for the SR+. I would really enjoy if you made one of these videos comparing the SR+ to the Standard Range model as well. I'd be interested to see those differences laid out as well. Anyways, good job, keep up the good work. One question, isn't all this connectivity stuff accessible by using your iPhone as a hotspot?
When doing a differences video you should probably tell people that the Standard Range Plus comes with a 8kw/100kw charger vs the AWD which has 11kw/200kw chargers built in. That means the Long Range AWD will charge a lot faster in your garage (providing your charger and electrical system can handle it) and twice as fast at Tesla Superchargers. THAT is a MAJOR difference!
UrAvgPopHunter ahhh okay totally understand. I ordered mine at the beginning of June so that makes sense. Interesting how fast they make so many changes on the cars. I’m glad i ordered when i did they’re definitely taking away some features but charging more for the cars. Black isn’t a free color anymore either.. Crazy
Quick note we do not know how much Tesla pays ATT for the data usage per car so the 10 a month or 100 a year may not make them money it might literally just cover the cost of the bandwidth for that car.
Currently if would be a SR+ but I am waiting for the Model Y, I do expect my Ice car will be working fine a couple of more years, by then everything can have changed. The audio, the connectivity, and the longer range is not important, but why is the fog led lights not standard??? Quite odd!
You are so right, this whole video is almost obsolete post V10 since SR+ got most of the interior features, Charge speed in SR+ also to be upgraded via OTA next week but still no floor lights but they can activated via OTA.
My logic is the reverse. I would buy the long range for the extra range, faster acceleration and premium sound but not for the connectivity option to enable Netflix and web browsing. Why? Because the former features are all hardware with intrinsic value and the latter can all be done from my phone.
They will for sure give that feature to us sr+ owners. For me I’m fine anyways, when you’re in early access program they give you connectivity free. Good way to know they can give it to you even though you have an sr+. They 100% can do it. There’s your magical answer folks.
- Upgrade to Long Rage from Standard Range Plus (for more range + the premium interior) - Upgrade to the 19’’ Sport Wheels (for looks) - Upgrade to the Full Self-Driving Capability (because it will be more expensive after)
The other things but make sense, but the 19s is the least necessary and most foolish. Especially because it is for nothing more than vanity and with 19s your ride is also more harsh. On top of it the tires most often cost more, have a higher chance of blowout or damaging a rim, and your range is decreased. Like I said, foolish.
Getting SR+. I wish the premium connectivity was an option. Here in the UK they also state that with LR cars you get 12 months of the premium connectivity for free before you have to pay... something for it. So if you get the LR you aren’t getting the web browser for free forever
Dont forget to factor the cost of money on prepaying for self driving when it wont be usable for years, even if they double the price it isnt worth the commitment today
It’s funny, they are being unclear of the future of the connectivity to not dissuade any potential LR purchasers, which might use that as a factor to decide which to purchase.
Can you make a video on Apple Music in Teslas? I understand it would take both Apple and Tesla to tango. Who would want it more? Who could be blocking it?
There are also weight and charging speed differences. The battery degradation is almost negligible up to 6 years or so in. Even 10 years in you won't see more battery degradation than perhaps 5% or 6% range. Personally I don't see the value in the long range if you rarely do road trips or don't need the all wheel drive due to winter driving / snow. Don't forget the ride quality when looking at larger than 18" wheels and that the larger wheels are more fragile / susceptible to pothole damage.
Many of the points in this vid struck home with me and might help you also ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mfIjMxyg00o.html At the end of the day you would also save a good chunk of money vs the more expensive versions. I just don't see the point of lugging all that extra weight in drive train and battery if you simply don't need the extra range. Having come from a string of RWD GM V8's, this setup also appeals to me from an enthusiast perspective.
I can’t watch RU-vid videos in my dual motor model 3 an error comes up and it says the video format can’t be played. Just thought I would mention that because of how many times you mentioned watching RU-vid and Netflix lol.
I’m honestly shocked that Tesla doesn’t include the premium connectivity specially the maps with live traffic by default. You can use google maps on a phone, but you buy a Tesla not to do that anymore. Just makes Tesla sound like a normal car company.
I bought the SR+ in Sweden. It's roughly 10k USD cheaper than LR. The only thing I miss now is the premium sound, in particular the low frequency bass. With software version 10 I got Spotify, Netflix, RU-vid, webbrowser. For free. And now 170 kW charging. Obviously if money were no issue I would go with LR, or even performance. All in all I'm very happy with the SR+ in my day to day usage. Although, Tesla customer support is terrible, which sometimes makes me regret going with Tesla altogether.
Fog lamps are also used so that other cars have a better visibility of your car in thick fog as they’re low to the ground which is where the fog is less dense.
