Longans are one of those under grown fruits here in California IMO. Follow Along the progress of this tree and all of my growing adventures by SMASHING THE LIKE BUTTON!
Hi Jeff, I my self also growing longan in Paso Robles Ca. zone 8b-9a. elevation 2000. I have Kohala, Biew Kiew, & Sri Chompoo. Also Lichee. At the moment it survive the winter here without protection. Do you have other varieties of longan ? How long did it take for your longan tree to produce fruits after you planted it ? I have calcareous clay soil. I have to bring in truck load of sand and mix it with native soil planted on a mound just like my avocado trees. So far they're looking healthy. Last year I gave my mother a Kohala longan tree from Florida. She live in Fresno Ca. The soil in her yard is sandy. The tree love sandy loam. I agreed with you on Lichee & nitrogen. The lychee will die if you add too much nitrogen. Plus they do not like clay soil. It will die in clay soil. I already have it happen. After replacing clay soil to sandy soil planted on a mound and the trees loving it including avocados. Been two years since I planted my trees. Hoping it will produce fruit this year 🤞Please share more info when do you fertilize your longan & lychee, before flowering ? during flowering? or after Flowering ? How often ? Thank You for sharing the info on longan & lychee/avocados.
I would like to try one someday I wonder if they taste as good as loquat. I just found out DJ is moving out of Waterford , has to start all over again growing avo trees hopefully he gets a large back yard.
Im just trying to clarify, you mentioned that your Longan is in part shade but if given the option, you’d plant it in full sun… did you initially plant it in part shade because you wanted to give it a microclimate? And now you seem to be realizing that Longans could actually handle 9b with no problem like Citrus trees?
Do you think that if I plant in full sun (6-8 hrs) that it still needs some sort of a wall or an overhang or can it handle the frost? Im talking about planting a a 5 year old tree in ground
My question is Jeff if u don't put nitrogen on trees wat can I put to feed them I have all my trees in pots? Lately I been using alaska fish fertilizer and mikrobes with epsant salt once every 4 feeds. So I switch to alaska fish fertilizer I'm hoping that was a good choice
I’ve had a tree in the ground through 2 winters here in Sonoma County. Last year and this year it tried to jump right into flowering. Cut them off to divert energy into growth, but the tree just sits out the rest of the summer after I cut off the flower bracts. Still no bigger than when I planted it… mulched and watered once or twice a week through the dry months. Any ideas for what to do differently to encourage growth over flowering? Esp since you recommend no nitrogen supplementation?
Everyone’s situation is different. In my garden, I dont use any added nitrogen , but everyone should do a soil test and/ or leaf analysis for best advice .
