In this tutorial, I walk you through my process of choosing thread, batting, and quilting patterns on my client's quilt of valor. She used a combination of panels in the four corners, printed borders, and then a piece center.
I go through some basic Quilting With Rulers with continuous curve, dot to dot, and stitch in the ditch. Then we do some free motion quilting fills - this time it's feathers and pebbles.

So very glad I just found you. Love your honesty and ease in front of the camera. It's refreshing that you are so Real. I've been longarming with my Juki for 8 years but never used rulers. You make me believe I can. Ordered Ditch It Mini, Echos, Baptist Fan and the tiny Foot Control yesterday. I cannot wait to get them and jump right into it. Just wanted to say Thank you for giving me courage and a renewed desire to create. God bless you my new quilting Friend.

This is a very detailed video. I enjoyed it. I send prayers that your home is in order now. Thanks for the 1/4 in. Disk you sent. I am so looking forward to get back to longarming as I’m in week 7 of my recovery of reverse shoulder replacement surgery. Without it, longarming/sewing was too painful. Your videos are helping so much until I can quilt/longarm again. 😎

*****OMG!!! I have had an Innova longarm since 2017 and just through your video learned that there is a needle down position. I am not sure how I found your videos, but thank goodness. I have recently moved more into rulers and to keep my position, I have been using the white button to get the needle to stay in the down position. What a game changer. Oh yes, it is a little thing. But a little thing that makes quite a difference. Thank you...Thank you!!!

Hi Micheal, I found you from a link on FB. Can I say I was just so taken in with your video. You have shown me how wonderful it can be to custom quilt. I am self taught and have learnt so much from RU-vid. I usually hide behind my pro stitcher and rulers when I quilt. I am going to continue to follow you with your quilting to gain more confidence with my own quilting. You have a great way to explain and I thank you for all your effort in sharing.

Hi Michael,. I love watching your quilting. You explain your "moves" so well. Are you right or left-handed? I'm Ambi but mostly left-handed. I'm trying to figure how I will be able to operate the machine and use a ruler and/or do free motion. Thanks for any pointers on this matter.
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts 2 года назад
Hi Val! I am right handed and find it easier/natural to hold my rulers with my left hand and quilt with my right. If you are ambidextrous, you could build up the muscle memory and coordination in both hands to be able to switch back and forth, which I think could be a great assett for your quilting! Let me know how it goes!

I’m brand brand new thank you I didn’t realize you push to stop before each move I have broken two needles and chipped a ruler just trying to figure out on my own so thank you for showing me the little things you have learned!

@@michael.quilts On that topic Michael, you are using Cruise setting...that means the needle is moving as long as the thumb control is "on"? Can you comment on why you use that as opposed to the stitch regulation mode where when the machine stops, the needle stops stitching?
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts 2 года назад
@@Westernwilson Another good question! I am still using stitch regulation. But I have the option (and most longarm quilting machines have something similar) to set a minimum sew speed, which means that when I push GO, the machine is going to stitch at my minimum sew speed, whether I am moving it or not. Then when I move it and am quilting, it stitches like it always does. But when I stop or pause, it is continually stitching at the minimum sew speed. I set mine to a low setting, but this makes sure that when I stop in a corner or slightly pause in a corner, that I get that final stitch that makes the sharp corner point instead of possibly creating a rounded corner because I did not pause in the corner. Hope that makes sense. That's really the only reason that I use it. Happy Quilting! Michael

You did a great job! Thank you for teaching and sharing your beautiful talents. I have only had my long arm since May 2021. I have been quilt on my Bernina 180 for almost 4 years for clients. I am looking for advice on how to dill with clients who are beginning quilting. Their quilts are so lopsided that I have had to take them apart in some area’s. I want to help them improve. I try to be sweet but honest . I have a filling the go home discouraged.
@michael.quilts
@michael.quilts 3 года назад
Hi Karen! Thanks so much for your comment and congrats on your new longarm! I know exactly what you mean about the beginning quilters and how to handle. I think what is best is to have a solid document or intake form that can be approached from a very nice standpoint that lists some of the major issues that you want them to take care of before dropping off to you for quilting. One easy way might be a simple Check List. The list could talk about making sure seams are pressed, threads are clipped, if their quilt is square (by folding in half and in half again (does it look like a square or some other shape - lol, and is the backing and batting larger than the quilt top, etc. You may already have this in place, in which case the next steps really are just clear communication. Some may require an email and a picture. If you are honest and say that you have run across an issue - perhaps you could take a picture and include it in your email, telling you client what needs to be corrected and offering them to correct it or that you could correct it (and charge by the hour or something). I know you don't want to emabarass your clients, but if they learn something, everyone is happier. Hope this helps! Happy Quilting! Michael
