Michael Davison of Quarter Squared Quilt Co. offering tutorials and informative videos on custom free motion machine quilting - machine quilting with rulers - and general quilty-type stuff.
Zowie, my 2nd video of several and you are fantastic at explaining the process. I don't have startch so i am going to make without. Hopefully they will turn out well. Thank you so much👏👏👏
The Harbor Freight magnet bars a quite strong but can fracture if dropped. I made individual cloth bags for mine to eliminate direct contact with the quilt top.
This was so helpful to see how you filled up this space with beautiful designs. Thank you for sharing this. You’ve taken some of the fear out of coming up with designs.
My partner bought this set a couple of months ago and this is the first video I've watched where you use the templates. We've had a sit-down longarm for awhile, and just picked up a stand up longarm and frame. I am thinking about using these templates on my first quilt. I just had a thought about the design of the templates (forgive me, but I do a bunch of 3D printing and CNC hobby stuff and I think critically about these things.) I noticed you using the smaller rulers to travel along the previous 11 inch curve. Seems like you could split the bottom of all the tempates (except maybe the 3") so that half was straight as currently, and the other half was enough of an 11" curve to travel with. [Hard to explain with words...] Anyway, not a flaw as such - just an idea. Love your videos!
Hey there! Thanks for your comment. I do know what you’re saying. I also designed this set for curved crosshatching and I wanted the full length. But I might reconsider. This set has not been updated for several years and I’ll definitely take your suggestion to heart. Thank you!
You are an excellent teacher! Repeating isn’t babying us. It is instilling that we remember the lesson!!!!❤ I have been doing rulers for a few years. This panel is a great way to practice with intention. Your comment just made me realize that I already own your Fab5 Baptist fan rulers and I love using them!!!
It doesn't make a difference how you start with them. In the video I see that mine are not all consistent. What you will find when you are finished is that the star points all have a double fold on the inside, no matter how you start and the outside of the star points do not have a fold.
Yes! I had never used it prior to training as a Quiltworx certified instructor. But I have been using it for almost all my piecing since. The only time I find myself not using it is on very long seams - like attaching borders, etc. but I probably should. Gives a really nice flat finish.
I have now made 15 for gifts to put inside my Christmas cards, your tutorial is sooo much easier then the others i watched so thank you for a great tutorial .
Thank you--I have watched many of the videos for this ornament--yours is by far the easiest to follow and understand! I have subscribed to yours, and will check out other videos you have done! Happy holidays to you!
I watched 3 other tutorials & just couldn’t follow along because it was too fast & details that u included, they did not. I am a retired elementary school art teacher, and I commend you on this presentation. I am so excited that now I am finally successfully making stars 😀. Thanks!
Michael, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! you made something that I was having problems with much clearer! I met you once briefly at a Friends of Judy, at Stitchin Heaven and I now plan on taking more classes from you I'm just South of Ft. Worth so probably at Quilt Country. I started (1.5 years ago) and I'm still working on my first Judy quilt (Paradise in Bloom) also it's my first real foundation paper piecing project. I mostly worked on it in my 1st class and then 3 friends of Judy retreats (Thank God for Tina and Sandra and their truck loads of patience) and I'm just now feeling like I can work on it at home without having an instructor standing close to help. Please keep of the videos, they are very clear to me! thanks again, Liz
Hi Elizabeth! I am so glad that you found this video helpful! Look forward to seeing you in class one day soon! Happy Holidays and Happy Quilting! Michael
There are quite a few beginner friendly patterns to choose from. If you would like to get used to the process with a block-based quilt - Maple leaf Flurries would be a good one. if you like something that is more in the medallion style, Pocket Compass might be a good one for you. Take a look at these to see if either look interesting to you. michaelquilts.com/product/pattern-maple-leaf-flurries-quiltworx/ michaelquilts.com/product/pattern-maple-leaf-flurries-quiltworx/
Thank you for the nice video. However, you did not mention the folded edge and the two fold edge side of the strip. I presume it has to have the 2 fold edge toward the center.
Good point! I probably was not even thinking about it when I filmed this a few years ago. I see that some of mine that I have made are not consistent, but if I were to film this again, I would probably put the double folds facing inside as I arrange the strips into the square "hashtag" formation. However, the final product really looks fine however they land - perhaps more professional looking though if you are mindful of that fold. Good tip! Thank You!
So did you change feet when you were doing your pebbling? Also I’ve noticed that a lot of you professionals use a hopping foot with your ruler work instead of a ruler foot. I would love to do that as well because I see the value in the extra visibility however I’m scared of messing up my foot or ruler using the hopping foot. Can you please give some pointers on what to watch for? I love the instruct you give. I use your 12” straight ruler for most of my lines and have both sets of your Baptist Fans but have not used them yet. Thank you for all you do for the quilting community. Love to watch you quilt.
Hi Jan. I leave my ruler foot on 95% of the time I am quilting. The other 5% is when I switch to the cup foot for stitching out with computer. However - I did switch to my open toe hopping foot for doing some of the free motion quilting on this quilt, but that is not typical of me. I guess I got used to free motion quilting with the ruler foot on and just prefer doing it that way. But I never use the regular hopping foot with rulers. It may look like it in this video, but my ruler foot is actually attached while I am doing ruler work. My ruler foot has a small cut out in front for some added visibility, but it's still the full wall ruler foot everywhere except that very front part. This is Innova's standard ruler foot. Hope this helps! Happy Quilting! Thank You - Michael
Honestly this is the best tutorial for these fabric stars. I made a few last year and am on 18/25 for this year so far. Your explanation of the set up is perfect and easy to follow. This is my new ‘go to’ video for these
I have watched several other video tutorials describing the process for making these Scandinavian Stars. Your video is by far the Best in terms of slowly explaining the entire process. However, I will most likely rewind your video to watch but, yet a few more times to fully immerse myself in the correct process. I am new to your channel & look forward to watching your other video tutorials on quilt making. Thank you.
I've been watching videos all morning trying to make this star. Yours is very easy to follow and is the only one that didn't make me scream obscenities at my computer screen. THANK YOU !!!
