Robert Llewellyn enjoys a wonderful drive up a mountain in the South of France in the newly released 30kWh Nissan Leaf electric vehicle. No question, it's a big improvement in terms of range and driver interface.
A bigger battery that's not physically bigger, just 25% more energy dense.

It's 2022, and I have no idea why RU-vid put this on my recommendation list. But, it really made me smile. 😁. Things have come on a long way. And I still drive a Leaf (e+).

Hi and great review ! You know your show is very well put together, and that's all the time. I encourage you to continue, because it is showing the true value, reality and emergence for an alternative solution to petrol vehicle and devices. Thanks to you people can now learn about this amazing, fully electric technology.

The 30 kwh also has another perk. it will charge faster to 100% than the 24kwh battery because of lower internal resistance.
@JRP3
@JRP3 9 лет назад
+glennwehmeyer It's still a larger pack and unless the charger is now much more powerful it will actually take longer. I'd also like to see a source for your claim of lower internal resistance.

+glennwehmeyer faster to 100% or faster charge rate? It probably charges faster in terms of miles per hour regained but it's still a significantly (25%) larger pack so you'd expect a full charge to take longer.

Awesome! EVs continue to get better and better. A 50kWh pack in a Leaf would be just about right if they could improve the aerodynamics to make it more efficient on the highway.

Like your reviews. They are really refreshing. One point is missing I think. When you fastcharge, you get 40 km extra from half an hours charging ( 80% of 250- 80 % of 199= 200 vs. 160 km) - on paper. So fewer quick stop-overs!

I wonder if you might confirm the change in elevation you took in the trip in this particular video. You state that you climbed "over 1,000 meters", but I think Col de Turini is around 1,600 meters (that's a great deal more than 1,000 meters). So, is that correct? The reason I ask is that I anticipate needing to be able to do a 1,500 meter climb over about the same distance (roughly 70 km up and then 70km down) and want to confirm that I can do so in a 30kw-hr 2016 Nissan Leaf.
@IainBaker
@IainBaker 9 лет назад
whilst the improvement is to be applauded, it us just a stop gap. as is mentioned in the video, it's a longer range not long range leaf... the long range leaf comes in a year or two, so I think I'll sit on my hands until then

Thank you so much for your really excellent, and reassuring commentary and filming. I am thoroughly enjoying watching your videos---trying to decide which make and model I should purchase this year. Can you give me an approximate idea about yearly running costs? Say, for the new Nissan Leaf? New tyres etc? And how long does the battery last? Does it ever need to be replaced? Thank you so much! Regards from Caroline :)

This is cool that Nissan is upping the batteries within the same volume, so older Leafs can extend their range even further. I'm on Leaf number 712 and it still charges all 12 bars. I enjoy how cheap it is to maintain and drive. The only issue for us old Leaf owners is the lack of information concerning the upgrade from the mobile 2g to 4g system.
@DaveCurran
@DaveCurran 9 лет назад
Looks like that Leaf had an extra battery gauge in the centre of the dash. Was that any more detailed than the 12 bars or the psuedo percentage that appears on carwings and only changes in 8% jumps? My Mk1 Leaf would jump from 39% to 31% then to 23% etc. and never anything inbetween, and that is one of the few complaints I have about it.

Viewed pics of the Right Hand Drive Leaf's interior... couldn't quite work out what side the indicator stalk was. Hopefully it's a proper conversion and the wiper stalk is left of the steering wheel, indicators to the right. It's a Japanese brand, surely it will be set for the standard RHD configuration?

I, a petrol head, have gone from being interested in EVs since the Leaf, i3 etc were launched, to a complete convert since I’ve been watching fully charged a couple of months ago! My problem is that a car is not a necessary possession living where I do, however it’s blooming convenient, hire/car sharing is ultra expensive in England and I really enjoy driving my modest 5,000 annual miles. My ‘performance saloon’ has averaged 31mpg in 4 years, mainly city driving short journeys. There’s the rub, as EVs are still more expensive, my mileage doesn’t give me the cost benefit once everything is factored in on a cost basis. If money were no object, there’d be a Model SP100D or at last an i3 parked outside.
@yvs6663
@yvs6663 3 года назад
bought one, i don't think the battery is too degraded. i live in a rather hilly part of the earth and my experience is that i get about 170km of range driving 90kmh GPS on the highway. so no where near 200km it promises. sure, the average consumption i got driving between towns(mostly 50kmh speed limit) indicates that the car would have had a range of 300+km if that was the only driving i was doing.
@wozzinator
@wozzinator 9 лет назад
I'm glad they're getting more range, but 6 kWh improvement is such an incremental upgrade. How is the battery pack laid out? Is it on the base of the chassis like the Model S? I don't understand why other EV manufacturers can't achieve the 200+ mile range. The patents are open, are they too proud to use them or is it something else limiting them?
@seanbouker
@seanbouker 9 лет назад
the Tesla is a skateboard design. the leaf is similar. but smaller. I've seen the packs detached before. it's like a bigger armoured phone battery. it's sick. there plan is to keep working on battery design to make it more energy dense. more kwh in the same space/weight. imagine a 50 kwh pack the same size and weight as the original. efficiency is increased. price remains low. given there are cheaper computer cars. this is a solid car I've been in one since 2011... every year the range has increased. this one is actually nearly double the original effective range of the car. there are other factors at play here. some are software related/ weight reduction... but this is the first one to break the 24 kwh limit... they actually reduced the weight in the last model by increasing the energy density. giving it extra range. this one. the leaf is a superior designed car to the Tesla in my opinion. let's get real for a second Tesla has launched this industry. but Nissan has been hard at work perfecting the every day EV. Tesla talks about a day in the future when the 3 will get 200+ miles and be affordable. but that's Nissan's goal as well. in the mean time Nissan has a real car I've been in for the past 4 years. that's got a solid battery replacement program. that I've yet to need. and has more than doubled the range on said pack in those 4 years. in another 4 when I need a new pack. maybe it will be at that 150-200 mile level. but right now it works it's super affordable on a limited income. and I really love my car lol

When this 30Kwh car was released, did the 24 go away? I'm finding it hard to find and answer to that. Almost all of the 2015/2016 cars I see for sale say they have the 24Kwh battery, but I'm wondering if that's correct (especially for the Acenta and Tekna ones). I'm specifically referring to the cars sold in the UK in '15/'16. Thanks
@Mayhemm007

In this situation, I would have driven the car like I would any ICE vehicle (ie: not overly aggressive, but not trying to ration energy either). We're rapidly approaching the point of no compromises with EVs versus ICEs, but I don't think we're quite there yet when it comes to the lower-cost EVs. 2017 will be a landmark year for that.
@Miata822
@Miata822 9 лет назад
+Mayhemm007 Perhaps you could drive your ICE more conservatively. Consider it a challenge to get the best mileage you can. Most people who buy EVs are concerned about conserving resources and will drive moderately no matter what. Nevertheless, EVs are, and will always be, different than ICE cars,

Just bought a 2019 SL Plus. Talk about range anxiety plugging in 110 volt every night. I do home inspections and need this car for some distance driving every day 80 to 100 miles. Just had 50 amp service installed in the garage, plugged into the 14 50 outlet, charging way faster. What's the deal with the parking brake on the new Leaf? I've got one on test drive at the moment. The one on my old MK1 Leaf seems a lot nicer, this mechanical ratchet thing is quite a step backwards. The extra range is a big difference though, and the range meter is almost accurate (compared to the extremely optimistic one on the Mk1).

So I'm thinking about buying one of these. The 24kw is not good enough. I need to drive 80km (50 miles) in 120km/h (74mph) in cold climate blasting the heat. Do you think this is possible with this car? Ive tried it with the old one and it didnt hold up.
@thegreatkhali88
@thegreatkhali88 9 лет назад
+MrMolbach, I highly doubt it. The range drops heavily at those kinds of speeds and cold weather, and you should have a safety margin on top as well. But you can do the math yourself, as this one has 25% better range.
@Madnesswillensure
@Madnesswillensure 9 лет назад
I don't think it will do. The Miev is actually a better choice if I have to stop and charge anyhow. It uses less energy, changes faster at 14-15 amps and still does the job. Its also about half price and I believe the service intervals are longer and cheaper. I have to decide if I want to change out my old Golf station wagon Diesel. The problem is no matter what I will miss something. I get 0.38l/10km or 60 MPG on this old 1.9 tdi and its great i just about every way :/

Col de Turini (one of the famous Tour De France summits) and Monaco Grand Prix circuit (picture 4 on your map) and they didn't get a mention? that really is focused reporting on the car itself. ;-) Id be interested to know in a future episode maybe, at what point does it become more cost effective to switch between carbon fuels and Electric, and vice-versa - there must be a point at which it is more economical (time, cost, maybe emissions) that a carbon fueled vehicle is the preferred choice?

I'm still 21 months away from getting one on Motability, but knowing my luck, the Leaf will be deleted as an option by the time my turn comes, and there is no hance a pension will run to the full cost of buying one, much as I'd love to). it's the same pack size/shape/same connections. just more energy dense. so in theory when yours dies or degrades to a UN-usable state. you could upgrade to the new pack. or the better one next year after this. they say they want to get it up to 200 mi range. there was a test leaf with a 48 kwh pack a while back.

Note that a litre of gasoline holds 9,000 watt hours of energy so these cars essentially have an equivalent tank capacity of 3/4 of a gallon of gas. Granted, these cars are topped off every night and are designed to be far more efficient than a gasoline car but to put it in perspective you are essentially driving around on empty all the time

***** Cheaper but then you still have a 4/5 year old car with all the wear and tear that goes with it. I would love to see it done though just because a leaf with a genuine 200mile range would be pretty much bang on for my trade. I would much rather use electrics because they offer much smaller fuel and servicing costs, clean running and are generally better. Only trouble is they need to be able to do at least 160miles in one go even if they have a/c on, etc. So far the only electric I can think of which could do it would be the tesla and they're prohibitively expensive for the task in hand.

Doesn't the Leaf have regenerative braking or regenerative engine braking? I would have expected your mountain drive to net you a higher battery charge when you arrived at the bottom then the 39% you had at the top, simple physics. Nissan must have the option for car buyers to purchase the 2017 Leaf with new 40 Kwh or 60 Kwh batteries. It should also must have the option to come with 2018 Leaf dash board into the 2017 Leaf. If the car can be made with rear wheel drive, it would make it more aligned with other standard cars - or it must come with four wheel driving with pull and push wheels.

AMAZING, its interesting how a p85d does about 420 km but a leaf can do more than the half with a less than the half kWh battery, much less, (still love Tesla n nissa!)

@Geckogold

+Albert Ellis I think Nissan said it can't. Which is a shame, because they could make tons of money off older Leafs. This would also bring their dealership network some much needed income since EVs don't need a lot of maintenance compared to a gas car.

here in Australia we don't get the 30 kWh Leaf....they are still selling us the original model as a brand new car! We "might" be getting the next generation all new Leaf....maybe! imiev is gone here too...if you want a new EV in Australia you have a choice of BMW i3 or a Tesla.....

So it took 5 years for Nissan engineers to improve battery by 25%. OK, in next 10 years it will have range which will make me actually interested in this car. Jokes aside, low range of Leaf is a real concern for me (not for most people living in civilization).

@cuddles6938
@cuddles6938 8 лет назад
+mrjaffar Newer batteries for EV's have gotten loads better just that the OEM's are not putting in the "best" in their cars to begin with. Which is why they have a company in California who charged $10,000 USD to UPGRADE the battery packs that came in the Toyota Prius from the factory. In the USA after a LEASE of a Leaf they are practically giving the cars away, asking the Leasee's if they want to buy the car outright for ridiculously LOW prices. If they keep doing this, it's not going to help do anything but kill the resale prices on these things.
@bobysze

Imagine when they finally jump to 60kWhs, when even 25% is a noticeable jump in comfort! If they improve aerodynamics a bit, they might be able to deliver a real world 250 mile EV, without a Tesla badge (and price).

when are they making a 140 mile range for the ENV200 ? I have a 80 mile range for mine and I definitely get range anxiety. but if I had 140 miles I definitely wouldn't. I use my van every day but I drive very slowly too save power. ?? Nissan hurry up and update your whole range.
@jaybou007
@jaybou007 8 лет назад
Unfortunately, with the Bolt hitting the market in North America, Nissan will have to hit the accelerator on the next gen Leaf. Here in Quebec, the territory's way too wide for such a range (yes, it really is a problem here). But with a 60kw/h battery, i'd be all over this car.

24 to 30kWh isn't exactly exciting. Instead of a trunk can't I just have a second battery pack? I will not buy one until its like 60 to 100kWh. Then I will buy one.
@2LegHumanist
@2LegHumanist 9 лет назад
+shadowx089 That would get you a 400Km range at motorway speed and 600Km in city driving. Personally I've found that I very rarely need that much range and when I do I am well compensated for the charge stops by the massive savings in fuel costs.
@ryancappo

Not wanting to knock Nissan, they are in my opinion offering a great vehicle here but you could almost be forgiven for thinking that we're being intentionally drip fed minor improvements when it comes to electric vehicles. I can understand the logic though, imagine affordable 55-60kwh versions of the Leaf with an even better motor in terms of efficiency and performance suddenly arriving on the market, the nut would be near cracked, so to speak! Maybe evolvement to such a thing is better than such a thing being suddenly available, after all there's a good deal of other things that need to be bought up to scale and spec if a large proportion of the motoring public quickly comes to driving an electric vehicle that's the equivalent of an Ecoboost 125 Ford Fiesta.

Until Nissan tells every dealer that they must carry this car and must have a 24/7 public charger available at their dealership they'll never sell any in Australia. My local dealer claimed to have *never heard* of a Leaf or an electric car. There's no way to get from *any* city to *any* other city in Australia using Nissan chargers and slightly longer range won't change that.

Doesn't do anywhere near 140 miles mate, I've got one & got 72 miles out of it, felt the need to charge at that point. So what conditions do you need to do 140 miles ? I'm a little worried about going on the motorway😱 How the hell do you get 120 miles out of this very nice car, that has very poor range
@LasVegar

When i drove the leaf when it was new i could get 225-200km out from it but the weather and temprature must be one you side and the drivers cababilty of driving the car, in winter the range drops
