The 15.65m Longer Semi Trailer has continued trials on Northern Ireland Roads.
The Longer Trailer Development, supported by Invest NI is currently undergoing trials under a DOE Vehicle "Special Order" within Northern Ireland.
THIS IS THE FIRST AND ONLY LONGER TRAILER WHICH HAS BEEN GRANTED A SPECIAL ORDER WITHIN THE UK FOR ANY SUCH TRIAL!
The Longer Trailer is 15.65m in length and fitted with a "Sidewinder Positive Rear Steer System". This technology means the geometry of the trailer is similar in comparison to a standard length trailer. To date, the trailer has demonstrated the ability to meet the legal turning circle criteria whilst ensuring proper load distribution within a standard overhang. It is suitable for use in a variety of applications such as flat trailers, curtainsiders, refrigerated trailers etc. In effect, this longer trailer design is longer, but importantly, does not compromise on proper vehicle design principles, practicality and safety.
With advantages such as a 15% payload increase, fewer vehicles on the road and a reduction on CO2 emissions, the Longer Trailer is currently an interesting prospect for the future on UK roads.

Thanks for your comments, we too were a little concerned regards tail swing so worked on a solution. This video was taken PREVIOUS to the development of our newly developed kick out reduction system which actually brings the tail swing to levels of a STANDARD 13.6m trailer. This now makes the Sidewinder Steering System the ONLY available steer which can enable with one steer axle to meet the EU turning circle requirements which requires a kick out less than 800mm, ours is now 250mm.

Thank you for your comment. To correct you, in the UK and the rest of the British Commonwealth, we use the spelling, "recognise", not "recognize" as you suggest. You must "realise" before you begin to "patronise" that in Britain we use "ise", not "ize", examples included. As this is a UK product/ business, we choose to use the version of the English language correct within our own country. I hope this information gives you a better understanding.

Well im impressed, as for tail swing its not that bad ... i thought as i read comments first it was horrendous, but it follows the inner circle of the cab and the axle doesnt engage turn unless severe steering is used..like a second steer on 6x2 units.. only down side i see is reversing puts alot on trailer steer as in vid its pushing the tyres to much, max loaded this will destroy tyres wheelnuts hubs etc..all in all 7/10

look up "fail turned win" because the reality if these trailers are approved will be these trailers in situations like this, companies always looking to cut costs will be sending these trailers anywhere and everywhere and the problem will be the drivers.

You have the very careful with these on hard locks in confined spaces. The back ends are unpredictable, swing out and can cause damage. I'm not a fan.

(continued) On the contrary, on the wide open roads of the USA it makes sense to max it out... make the trailers long, and the tractors can afford to be long too, with large sleeper cabins and low-slung cabs behind the engine instead of over it. It make is a bit more aerodynamic too which helps with long-distance efficiency. Basically the different road infrastructures in Europe and North America mean different types of trucks are best suited to each region.

They follow well,but the tail swing is not to be underestimated.And when the rear axle is locked they are way harder to reverse.

Take a look at the Denby Eco-link. The whole thing is 83 feet, so not quite a proper road train. Denby is a private trailer manufacturer that has been testing the configuration show in its videos on private proving grounds and has been trying to force the government's hand to allow it on UK roads as it would save truck operators money by reducing the number of vehicles they need on the road. When companies have out of town depots they needn't go into cities.

The development of this trailer has been ongoing and since this footage was taken we actually have modified the design with fitment of a NEW patented kick out reduction system which actually brings the tail swing to a level which is comparable to a standard 13.6m. Video footage will be released in the next few weeks so why dont you sign up to our channel to be alerted when new videos are added so you can see this yourself!

The road trains you talk about and the ones in Australia go up and down arrow straight roads in desserts and open plains with little traffic. We haven't got landscapes like that to build such roads. They would fit on a motorway but there's too much traffic, lane changing would be impossible. We can't go demolishing historical cities like London and York just to accommodate huge vehicles. A lorry is a truck, we generally only call pickups trucks.

Well Speaking as an English Ex-HGV1 Lorry/Truck Driver (18 years Experience) who also drove B-Doubles in & around Victoria, N.S.W. & South Australia for a few of years. BIGGER Lorries/Trucks in the UK/Europe = Fewer Jobs, EVEN Lower Pocket Money (Too LOW to call Wages now) Just like when the MAX Gross Weights went UP from 32 to 38 to 40 then 44 Tonne Now. MORE Muppets who'll say "ooh I'd LOVE to drive 1 of those" What ? £6.08/hour OK I'll PAY YOU to Drive 1 BUT, I Want a BIG Chrome Horn on TOP

I'd still allow the lorry driver to use my lane if he/she wants when turning a sharpish bend or small roundabout, i'm gonna be learning to drive lorries soon and I am only used to a small car :O. great technology and lorry drivers would likely need it anywhere

I love this concept and have been pondering ways to implement it in the U.S. using a standard 53' foot 10-2 spread axle with third axle placed in close tandem right in front of spread. My only problem is figuring out how to make steering an automatic feature requiring no input from driver.
@yan24to
@yan24to 7 лет назад
James Barrow They connect to the 5th wheel opening and steer as you steer,there is another type which just follow on but they lock up on reversing which makes them harder to reverse,than the ones in this video.

You state that an LST can carry a greater payload it can't the max payload is 44tons. What it can carry is greater volume or pallets but only up to and including 44tons. Would you agree?

These 51 foot trailers are becoming more popular now. Asda have five based at Belvedere and Eddie Stobart's have some too. They're still a 44 ton payload though, which is 6 tons under STGO Cat 1 at 50 tons. Incidentally, an 8 foot unit puts the vehicle 2 feet shy of Cat 1 maximum of 61.75 feet. A long nose unit would exceed that. I've been told that companies require a special permit for their use but drivers don't need to take an extra test as the standard C+E covers them.

So what? Many other European countries have road trains like that but in the UK it's just not possible. You can see the limited space these lorries have to operate in on UK roads and that's why turning circles have to be tight and kick out minimised. In the USA and Australia roads have all been built for modern vehicles whereas lorries sometimes have to go down medieval streets built for no more than a horse and cart in the UK.

I’ve used these rear steer extra long trailers, can’t say I’m a fan , they move round country lanes nice but you need to be very careful when going on and off a bay because of the rear swing out of the end of the trailer,it’s easy to clip the neighbouring unit, especially if you are in a tight yard, 👎🏻

The wheel base of that tractor has got to destroy a driver's back.
@garethifan1034
@garethifan1034 9 лет назад
Lance Roark Not at all - these are European trucks - made for comfort with 4 point cab air suspension and air suspended seats. Like riding a magic carpet. The wheel base is standard issue for working with13.6 M/45 Ft trailers within UK/EU length regs, the max being 17mtr Tractor& Trailer nose to tail - excepting these trials with these new 48ft rear steers of course.
@lanceroark6386
@lanceroark6386 9 лет назад
Trust me. After driving a 300" truck (7.62m), I couldn't be paid enough to drive that. I understand that it's all you get in the UK, but I would find a new profession. At 70 mph, hitting a bump in a tractor with a 230" wheel base is absolutely different from a 300". Cutting that in half? Your front end has no time to settle before the back tandems get jolted.
@garethifan1034
@garethifan1034 9 лет назад
Well each to his own. Personally I couldn't care less about 300'of wheelbase or having a bonnet in front as it's never been an option for us. I know there is no way would I prefer any US truck to a smooth modern European. My comment was not intended to bring about criticism of trucking equipment elsewhere - rather just to inform about the differences. I'm sorry you took that as an opportunity to criticize.
@lanceroark6386
@lanceroark6386 9 лет назад
Lol. I wasn't being critical. I guess you're just ignorant to the reality that our trucks have those high tech gizmos called airbags in the suspension and seat frame too, but now you don't have to be. The longer the frame length, the less movement in the entire vehicle. It's like difference in a 50ft ocean going vessel and a 300ft vessel. A 10ft wave feels different in each. You haven't driven a long truck with 50,000 pounds on it, you don't know what it feels like. I have driven high end short frame trucks. They suck. I actually like the look of a truck without a "bonnet." You need to get off your high horse. Just because you think the US is full of Neanderthals doesn't mean it actually is. This crap about high tech UK equipment being better than US equipment is retarded. We get the same stuff over here. We have trucks running just as clean, and just as efficiently as you do. Volvo doesn't give us trucks from the 70's. Moron.
@garethifan1034
@garethifan1034 9 лет назад
What a jerk. In your ignorance - you're judging European vehicles by US standards - you..need to get off your high American horse where everything US is bigger, better just because..well just because..- No - it aint. Til you've been and tried em out - all you're doing is blowing out hot air from a certain orifice. The point about Neanderthals - which actually I never made - has been well illustrated by yourself without my aid. 'Way to go'

Great, so now the excuse is to cut down on the carbon foot print, "CRAP" this is an excuse to try and cure the problem of driver shortage, but they won't admit it. It's bad enough now when the car driver over takes you and then realises that the length is 15 mtrs on the new 30 palleter. What next Aussie style road train's!!!!!
@DarqeDestroyer
@DarqeDestroyer 11 лет назад
You are ignorant of European roads. America is a young nation that practically grew up with cars and trucks. Long straight roads abound, and wide avenues in the cities. Europe is full of nations that are thousands of years old. Many major highways in Europe actually follow the routes of Roman roads. The cities are full of narrow streets and tight corners. 53 foot trailers hauled by Peterbilt long nose sleepers would only succeed in getting stuck, repeatedly, if you tried using them in Europe.
