This video hit closer to home than most I follow since I recently went from Honda to Harley. I've owned many bikes in my 47 years but never a Harley until this year. The inflated prices, lack of "evolution" in the design/engineering of HD and the less than Honda reliability always kept me from considering Harley until the Milwaukee 8 was introduced. I traded my Honda Goldwing F6B in for a 2017 HD Road Glide Ultra and haven't regretting it yet. The Goldwing's fixed foot position, 5 speed with OD rev'ed higher on 55 mph and up roads and overall fit and finish eventually led me to read, review, study, visit the HD dealership and study some more before finally making the jump to HD. It wasn't cheap, but I can honestly say that everything about this particular Harley has impressed me so far. The storage capacity, the side bag designs, the heat management system, the Milwaukee 8 engine design, less vibration and that glorious 6 speed gear box. The close knit HD community was not a deciding factor at all and will never really be a big deal for me but I appreciate the motorcycle riders courtesy for one another overall. In summary, when it comes to riding, find the one you love and go with it. The brand doesn't matter and if you buy for brand, you're buying for the wrong reasons. Keep up the good work Dubbs.

Not really apples for apples, the F6B vs the Ultra Glide. I'm in the reverse case at this point. I just got back from a 1,500 trip on my Road King and along the way developed another leaking primary case gasket. This would be the third time in less than 8k miles and almost left me stranded in the middle of nowhere. However, the leak was slow and a old timer Harley mechanic I looked up in Ridgecrest, Ca. told me I could get home based on the oil residue, so I pushed on and made it. The mechanic had his own shop next to his house and knew right away what the problem was and much to blame placed on Harley's parts ID on this part number, but I won't go into that. A riding buddy rode his Softail on the ride and got beat to death while I faired better but that's after I had made a number of modifications in the last few years like Progressive fork inserts, Energy Suspension shocks, frame dampener, Saddleman seat and fork wind deflectors. These upgrades helped, but not enough to stop me from deciding to look for a real touring bike. Both myself and my buddy are now looking to buy Goldwings, hes buying new, sold his Softail and is actively looking. I have to get mine repaired first then it's going up for sale too, but this time I'm going to demand the shop uses Cometic gaskets instead of Harleys. BTW, I bought the bike because a new remanufactured Harley motor was just installed at the dealer (expensive upgrade), three months later the gasket went out and fortunately it was under warranty, the next two are on my dime. I never thought I would ever buy a Harley and I never thought I would ever buy a Goldwing, but things change as I have owned a number of sport bikes, mainly Ducati and I still have a 999R for those times I need to blow it out in the canyons. The one thing my buddy and I agreed on when it came to Harley was they sound good, but again, my goal is to take on longer rides and the Goldwing is better suited for that and with a better reputation for reliability. If I had the money I would keep the Road King for day rides.

@@JohnS916 A Road King is not a Touring bike lol. That's like saying a Street Glide is a touring bike even tho both are built on the same platform as the Ulra, the suspension is different than an Ultra. The Ultra's are the touring models, the others are simply form over purpose. A Road King is a stripped down naked version and a Street Glide is lowered for cool factor with a 19" front wheel and low profile tire which relates to a poor riding touring bike, not a true touring bike as stated. As far as your primary case leaking, what year Harley are you talking about? The 14 and up, heck, even the older 09-13 do not have primary case gasket leaking issues. There's always way more to the story, I'm sure. Like the upgraded engine, so, someones had that bike tore apart and the issues probably relate to the person who performed the work and not the gaskets. Go ahead and try out the GW's, I did and I'm back to a Harley. The GW's are fast and nimble but they do not have a comfortable riding position like a Harley.

When I was young, I wanted a Harley but never had the chance. For the passed 12 years, went from a Suzuki C90 Boulevard to a Goldwing 2001 fisrt Generation then the Goldwing 2012 second Generation. This bike was scraped and brought back to life by a great mecanics that I don't remember, but I have put a good 40 000 miles during the last 2 years and a half. That GL1800 is my bike and I love her, anyone has their own choice and whatever anyone else says, when you find your bike, stick to it and live the open pastures freelly, you are master of your own futur.

Very good review. Congratulations on your Harley-Davidson! I bought my first Harley-Davidson, 2017 Road Glide Ultra absolutely love the bike. My last one was1100 Suzuki. You made a lot of good points but if I might add some of my thoughts. I find I get more attention on my Harley from other riders than I did with the Japanese bike. I also like with the Harley your part of a world ride community. My take is everybody is always comparing everything to Harley-Davidson. I never found that with the Suzuki. Thanks for the honesty

Good vid Dubbs. Here's my take on your bike switch. You got clipped on the Honda purchase right off the bat. New model just out, it happens. Instead of brushing it off you let that get at ya. So the ctx 1300 has to go, clear the slate so to speak. Now your running the Harley, new roads, new beginnings. Now, you lost a wad of money, put that behind ya and just enjoy riding. From one biker to another, for what its worth.

I enjoyed your review. I agree that the lightness of CTX in windy conditions is annoying. I will stay with Honda because CTX has been very comfortable and reliable. I have overheard Harley owners talking about reselling their bikes and I feel all the mods lead to less reliability. Thanks for the great vids.

Great vid man. I ride a 16 RGS too. Love mine. It's good to see some Harley vids where the narrative isn't tainted by gnarly brand loyalty. If you'd review my list of motorcycles I've owned, you'd definitely see a heavy HD favoritism, but I too owned a GL1200 and absolutely loved it. It was like a Swiss watch, smooth as butter and had plenty of passing power while on the interstates. The trick to motorcycle ownership is finding the balance between form and function. And personally, the Road Glide is a really winner for me. I have comfort and storage, as well as having that 'turn around as you walk away to enjoy the beauty' of the machine. Keep up the good work man. Look forward to your future vids

Was looking at a CTX 1300 as a secondary bike. I have a 16 softail slim that I will be keeping. After watching several of your videos I am convinced that the CTX does not offer me the extra I need to justify a second bike. No cruise control and lack of power were the deciding factors. Came to the conclusion that the softail does everything the CTX does and has the power I expect.

As a owner of several bikes, including a Harley, this video nails a lot of good points. I like my Harley, but it is definitely not my favorite. The Harley just requires a lot of weird things to maintain it. For example there are 3 oil drain plugs. WTF? The amount of things you need to do to it frequently(5000 mile maintenance?). The service costs are outrageous. The only bike I owned that was worse was my BMW. But the Japanese bikes are WAY easier and costs less to maintain. If someone asks me one way or the other(Harley vs Non-Harley) I will never talk anyone out of buying the bike they want. However, knowing what I know now, I probably would not have bought a Harley in the first place. I guess i was just in a patriotic mood.

I’ve had a 75 and 85 GW. Both were good bikes. I put a lot of miles on the 75, but the 85 I only kept one summer. The seat on the 85 pushed me towards the tank too far. It really was painful to ride. I tried 1500 GW and Valkyrie around 2000+. By the time I was ready to purchase the 1800 was out, but sitting on it my shins rubbed against the engine guards, if I remember correctly. I tried a used road king and the seating position was great and over 4 summers put 100,000 miles on it. I traded it for a new 2014 limited, which I still own, with 170,000 km (100,000+ miles). I had good service from both bikes just oil changes, tires. I don’t think I’d go back to GW, but that old GW had a vetter fairing and Yamaha bags, not overly stylish, but we loaded it down, 2up, camping gear, duffle bags on top of the side bags, we had a lot of fun with it. We still ride the same with the Harley, 2 up, loaded, minus the tent and extra duffle bags. Both eras we were gone on 1 month+ trips, still really enjoy it, won’t trade the memories.

In Australia it's so much dependability as to availability. According to my research there are 698 Harley dealers in the USA compared to roughly 50 here in Australia whereas there are at least 200 Honda dealers here and that's not counting Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Hondas are dependable and where you travel big distances to get anywhere here dependability is a big must and that is why Japanese bikes sell well here because every town worth it's salt in Australia has at least one Japanese motorcycle dealer if not all of them. In America the opposite is true so Harley is the big seller. I'd love to own a Harley. My heart says Sport Glide but my soul belongs to Honda. If ever I came to America I would ride Harley because of that very reason. Ride what is right for you. There is no wrong type when it comes to two wheels.

I think some of us just like variety. I'm a retired road racer (privateer) and once I retired I've had (over past 15 years) a Road King, Street Glide, a Sucker Punch Sally, and now I have a CVO Breakout. Been thinking about this bike cuz they are so cheap now. Or a 2006ish Goldwing.

I have owned six Harley’s over the years and currently ride an Electra Glide. I bought my first Wing last June. A slightly used 08 GL1800 in pristine condition. I love both my bikes and think these will be my last touring bikes. I’m 62. I may purchase an ADV bike for a bucket list trip to Alaska at some point but that’s a different topic.

My 2018 GW Tour entertainment sys is not all what its cracked up to be, but then, I'm not so sure what people are expecting on a motorcycle. The FM reception on my GW is terrible even within major metropolitan areas where reception should not be an issue. There are also other issues, like how and in what order you sync up your bluetooth equipment. Connect your phone 1st and then your headset and you will not get Apple Car Play to work so, every system seems to have its issues. I've owned a Harley Street Glide and what I can tell you about them, they are built on the same platform as the Ultra but the Ultra has a different suspension, tires and wheel sizes and the Street Glide is more about attracting an image from the bagger world of customized Harley's, smart on Harley's part to target that group but the bikes are hardly a true tour bike with shorter shock travel and low profile sport tires. They are more for the around town bar hopper than an all out long distance tour bike. How one intends to use a bike makes all the difference and often times people choose a moto on emotion and not intended use.

I agree. You will be back to Honda eventually. I owned several Honda's including a 2012 GL1800 and I missed them so much I just traded my Dyna for a 2001 F6C. Honda gives you the quality of being trustworthy and performing consistently well. My FXDB always started(until my battery also died) but the vibrations constantly meant things were coming loose on my HD. I didn't like that. The covers for my rear tail lights used to pop off occasionally from the vibrations and I even lost my license plate because it actually vibrated loose from the twin cam 96.

Good video, I see your points, and understand. It's kind of odd that Honda and Yamaha aren't, don't have exclusive dealers like Harley does. Then again I guess it's just how it's all been set up. I still say you go with whichever personally suits you. If your able to do repairs yourself, then things are a little simpler, but if you need a dealer then Harley could be a very good option assuming other variables like reliability n such. Just a shame they overcharge for everything, and anything.

Just purchased a 2018 GW Tour 6spd and all I can say is....I'm not impressed. Yep, not impressed. I've owned a 2014 and it had much better wind protection and as far as a tour bike, they are terrible for storage. Power, maintenance, nimble yes all those things are what one would expect with Honda. My 2014 had soft paint issues that you could scratch with your finger nail, not so on the 2018. The infotainment sys is not all what it's cracked up to be either. I prefer a Harley in the end. Ride what you like, not what others like.

It's all about location , location. In Australia it's almost the opposite. For example Harleys are WAY more expensive than any of the Asian brands and from what I can see there are more Honda dealers than Harley dealers. Don't get me wrong though . Harley Davidson has a big following here Down Under but as far as price is concerned Honda over the board have cheaper bikes and good after sales.

DubbsRider Test rides are free at your local Honda dealer. Then you’d know with certainty what this newly redesigned GoldWing is about, have a qualified opinion and would know with certainty it’s an absolute beast of a Sport Touring bike. HD’s are beautiful but way over priced, are air cooled and behind technologically. It’s more about what feels best from an image standpoint for most people, image and cool factor are important for most people seeking a riding community, besides you never see “Honda” tattooed on people. The 2018 GoldWing Tour or the GoldWing Bagger or GoldWings in general rarely, if ever see a service tech.

You are comparing apples to oranges in this comparison. The Harley is a full size touring machine. The Honda is not. I have had a Harley Electra glide and. A newer gl1800 The Harley was a great bike but so is the Honda. Direct competition to each other. Two different approaches to the same problem. Both had good and bad points. I agree the Honda dealers are very poor at customer support where the hd dealers (in sw Florida at least) got a good system of supporting customers as long as you are willing to pay really high prices. So it all boils down to individual choices. So get out there on whatever you ride n burn some gas!

Been there done that and hated my F6B, worst seat for comfort, way too wide and then added highway pegs in order to stretch out my legs and felt like I was riding a horse. No thanks. Honda's may be fast but there's more to riding than going fast. I was even tempted by the new GW Tour and bought a 2018 6spd and just like the F6B, not much different and even less wind protection, even less storage space. Not a true tour bike imo. More like a two up sports bike with a trunk. Oh, and I've also owned a 08 VTX1800, a fast vtwin but very top heavy for a Vtwin. I kept that bike for many years but just like DubbsRider said, I started looking at customizing and what I ended up with in the end was a metric version of a Harley. In the end, to each his own, ride what you like not what others like.

I have found that as soon as you have to start spending money on maintenance or broken or worn out parts I think that you are going to find out that the Honda is a higher quality built bike and the Harley in the end is going to eat your pocket book up. A Honda will not do that if you maintain it with the same care. I speak from experience and I am back to Japanese. Sorry but I am not going to just spend my money to say I support a name brand which is 'All American". When Harleys can build em with the same quality I might go back. But I like my money and work too hard to get it just to give it to somebody because it's the 'thing to have' to prove you are a loyal citizen or some kind of crap to that affect.

Your claim that it and the after market parts are too expensive. Go take a class on economics. Harley is in business to make money. Why would they sell their bikes for less than it costs to make them. Where is your import made? Indonesia? Japan? The people that make those bikes could never afford to own one. I have owned 10 or 11 Harleys. Never complained once about what they cost. If you keep your Harley you best not complain about it, you make yourself look stupid.
