I spent a few days in the Ecuadorian rainforest with Dr. Susan Finkbeiner as she uses one of the longest butterfly nets in the world to study some amazing species. Come along for the adventure, and stick around to hear her talk about her life as a scientist.

Depends on the individual, when they are territorial you're almost certain to find them in the same place every day!

Cool, I didn't know they could be territorial. Thanks And how long does the mark stay? I have marked hummingbirds like that, because I couldn't band them, but the colour is gone their next molt. How long would it stick around on their wings? Is there anything more long term?

The marker stays on butterfly wing scales essentially forever! Even after a butterfly dies you can preserve the marked wings, and the marked number will stay there.

I always thought that you are not supposed to touch the wings of Lepitoptera, because you would scrub some of their scales off, thus hinder their ability to fly. Is this just a myth? Are they okay with being touched when handled carefully?
