Hello! i'm from Spain. Absolutely love this channel! Could you make a video about how to make labels? Also, I don't know if it is illegal for me to send you specimens from Spain but would do it as a gift.

Wow!!!! Thank you so much for the kind words!!!! I have a few videos out about mounting butterfly specimens that includes label making. I’ll make a clear video about this topic soon. If you can send specimens as a gift I would love to receive them!!!!!! I do not have any specimens from Spain!

Thanks. How to catch one if it’s in a box? I want to get a bow of butterflies for a release for a film, and I need to catch one and put it inside of someone’s palms. So I won’t have a net. Do I just grab wings, I’m scared to do it ??
@keysmoths5336
@keysmoths5336 2 месяца назад
Sure. The best thing to do is put the butterflies in the refrigerator for 4-5 minutes. This will chill them down and you can gently pick them up by the wings without damaging them and place them where ever you want to do you video footage

The hardest butterflies for me to catch are Tortoiseshells and Cloudless Sulphurs. I’ve heard the hardest are leafwings. What do you think is the hardest?

Another question for you since you deal with moths too. What are those moths that fly around your outdoor porch light, that are kind of long in size? During the Summer they got into my house. I've found them inside of the tied up bread and oatmeal etc. I've sprayed, but I still come across one. They're very annoying. They'll fly right into your face. How to get rid of them please?!
@keysmoths5336
@keysmoths5336 Год назад
How big are they? There’s probably not an easy way to get rid of them if they’re flying in from outside. It’s not like you have an infestation or anything. Unless they are breeding inside of your oatmeal box. Are they coming from inside or outside?

I love butterflies. Wondering what's the name/type of the one that keeps following me. It's mostly orange with blue, black, green and other colors, it's beautiful. 😎 And can you keep them alive in one of those plastic bins made to house them? What would you feed it? Nectar?

Hi there. In order to identify the butterfly, I need to see a picture. Most butterflies in captivity will drink sugar water placed in a sponge or on a paper towel. Or you can use a piece of fresh apple or banana you cut it open and put it in the container. Most species will take the juice and sugars from a banana or apple in captivity. Some species may not be quick to eat and may need a little coaxing by placing them on the fruit or on the sugar water but then once their feet touch the sugar, almost always they start eating. Hope this helps

One small correction- butterflies can actually hear. Especially the cracker butterflies which have very developed hearing. Great video!
@keysmoths5336
@keysmoths5336 2 года назад
Hmmm. I’ve always understood that butterflies lack tympanic membrane which is necessary for hearing. Moths have a clear tympanic system thiugh
@ethanbrownpiano
@ethanbrownpiano 2 года назад
@@keysmoths5336 Hmm really? I know for sure Crackers have sensitive hearing because the males are able to be clicks only heard by their own species. I could be wrong. Maybe, butterflies can sense the vibrations with their antenna. they don't have "actual ears."

@keysmoths5336

Yes. Leaf wings and others in the Charaxinidae group. Those that land on tree trunks are the worst!!
@keysmoths5336
@keysmoths5336 2 года назад
The largest sulphur is Phoebis philea. Orange barred giant sulphur. We supposedly get Anteos marulea (yellow angled sulphur) but I think I’ve only seen 1 in 40 years in south florida
@ethanbrownpiano
@ethanbrownpiano 2 года назад
@@keysmoths5336 Yeah! Especially Charaxes. My goal is finding the Goatweed leafwing this year. I want to catch one. I have many charaxinae on my permit, I might get some soon.
@ethanbrownpiano
@ethanbrownpiano 2 года назад
@@keysmoths5336 I love Phoebis philea. Supposedly, it's the largest one here to. However, there is only one sighting of the Large Orange Sulphur in last 40 years. It was sighted at a college. I may have seen the OBS 2 years ago. It's incredibly rare. It would be nice to see some Senna planted where I live. We need more Cloudless sulphurs, Sleepy oranges, and little yellows. The DNR tried planting senna in one county in my state about 50 years ago. Ever since, there is one colony that exists only in that one area. I collected a few last year.

To all RU-vid Commenters who have seen the Nickelodeon Cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, if you like to catch butterflies with a butterfly net, pretend to be SpongeBob jellyfishing because the jellyfish nets remind me of butterfly nets, and kids who like SpongeBob see catching butterflies just like jellyfishing.
