In this episode of TechKnow, we explore the regions where people enjoy a longer life of good health, regions known as Blue zones.
Acciaroli is one such region. It is part of what is known as the Cilento Coast of Italy, situated 140 km south of Naples. It has a high concentration of centenarians living there.
According to researchers from Rome's Sapienza University and the University of California, San Diego, one in every 60 of its residents is at least 90 years old.
This Mediterranean region has become known for good health supplemented by diet rich in fresh produce, pasta, olive oil, and rosemary.

This is the kind of life I'm looking for. Laid back, free from stress, being able to grow my food and cultivate my garden and enjoy fresh and organic food. Meeting and greeting friendly neighbors and has closed bond relationship with the family in a beautiful, fresh, and clean environment. This is a little paradise on earth.

I don't think they were saying that their lives were free from stress, they did go through two world wars after all. It seems that they dealt with their stress better than we do with the stresses of the modern world. Perhaps they didn't have the same expectations of an easy life that we have grown up with?

It is so obvious to me why these people grow older. The fabric of their culture has not been ripped apart by modernism. They want to hold on as long as possible because it offers them the opportunity to see their great grandchildren grow old. It is obvious the family bonds are still intact and old people are revered elders.

Sorry but what you said it’s not exactly, in fact the main reason of longevity is based on genetic. Secondly even the non-modernity as you mentioned actually is not correct because close family and friendship ties, plenty of sunshine which don’t concern non- modernity (in general the Italian life-style demonstrated by science) are some of the reasons of Italian’s longevity.

@Adam A. A MAN thought to be Russia's oldest person has died at the age of 122, authorities in the North Caucasus region of Dagestan said. Magomed Labazanov, a retired labourer who lived in Serebryakovka village close to the city of Kizlyar, died early Friday, the local government said on its website. Labazanov was reportedly born in Dagestan and worked in a sawmill and later on a farm. He never learned to read and write. The date of his birth has not been authenticated as he did not have an original birth certificate. According to the Guinness World Records, the oldest person in the world is Besse Cooper of the United States, who turned 116 last month. The mountainous North Caucasus is famed for its long-lived elders, although the turmoil of the Soviet era means that many do not have documents proving their age. Labazanov was one of the thousands of people in North Caucasus republics who were uprooted during World War II on Stalin's orders and deported to Central Asia, returning only in the 1950s. Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda said he attributed his long life to a simple diet of corn bread, whey, fruits and vegetables. Hi did not drink alcohol or smoke, it said. Labazanov celebrated his 122nd birthday on May 1, according to local media..................................................................................................now other then corn bread, he didnt eat much grain, other articles he says he ate occasional sheep's milk, local meats, poultry, fresh vegetables and fresh spring water...remember though europe has highest life expectancy and highest production and access to organic foods

@@perseagratissima Are you telling me it’s impossible to have grandparents born in Italy in the 1800’s, and not have a connection to my current family in Italy? My grandparents came to the United States over 125 years ago, in fact, from Palinuro (Centola), had 8 children in the United States, all Americans. All of their children, including my father who is still alive at 94, lived close to 100. Their first language was Italian. My grandparents were born in Italy, we have relatives in that region. It’s a very simple equation. They came through Ellis Island, lived here in the United States and had American children. My dad was born in 1927, the only child still alive, and was the youngest. Pretty easy to understand. The only embarrassing comment here is yours. Comments like yours doesn’t make me feel good about being proud to take so much effort to keep my familial Italian connection alive. Mediterranean food is the secret simply because it is rich in olives, olive oil, vegetables, fruits nuts with chicken and fish mainly and a little red meat it's healthy yet the best tasting on the planet.

Red meat isn't the problem (and I don't support meat generally, because I eat very little) but I know Sardinia, and there is a lot of red meat- beef and lamb - but it is grown on green pastures, not fed with chemical food and kept inside.

Move to the Mediterranean, sit in the sun, go for a swim, eat good food, sounds like the good life to me :p No wonder it has so many expats. Best be careful with too much sunlight though, as white Europeans we have evolved to seek it out and catch every glimpse, feel the soft touch of warmth on our skin, but it's not as friendly as it seems.
@willtherealgeorgemichaelpl5879
Lol! You are correct Mr. Brazorf. I have people on the internet calling me black,because I live in Greece. Greeks have been white since the beggining of time,unless you run into migrants or gypsies. Modern people have been led to beleive strange things,thanks to the Jew revisionist historians. We have lived on these lands way before Homer and Herodotus and we will continue to the end of time...

yes I'm white but grew up in the tropics. We seek out the shade most of the time when we're outside. Mild sun exposure is great...it increases vitamin D production in your body. But too much can lead to skin cancer. You should always wear a hat outside.

The more I look into the blue zones the more convinced I am that it is not about “what they do.” Then we hear “I drink milk, I eat eggs and drink wine and Pepsi, which is important.” The truth is even these people don’t know. I am convinced that it has to do with the energy of the zone. Nothing geo-political here but rather “geo-health and longevity.” As they say “move here and you will live longer”. True.

Dont forget that these people lived 2 world wars.. they had very little food and almost no meat during their young age and for sure no sugar and all the food that we have today. They walk and move everyday, they ate natural foods and during the wars they struggled. That made them stronger. If you notice the other women with the old woman are all fat. Because now the culture is different. They eat a lot of meat and pasta now. Before they had just bread, vegetables, some egg and a little dairy organic product. Few meat from their land but not always; very little for almost 3/4 of their life. They eat very early at night and sometimes soups that give the digestion good rest.

@chuck6646

They aren't stressed like the younger generation in Italy because they have a pension and have owned their houses for several generations. They were in their 20's during the second World War so I think that they have had 70 years to get past the psychological trauma of that war. The younger more anxious generation that they mentioned in the end live in a more globalized and competitive world. In order to stand on their own two feet they have to move to the bigger cities (Sassari, Oristano, Cagliari,Rome, Milan etc) to hustle and find work. Hustle = more stress. As the mentioned, the environment isn't saturated with massive environmentaly destructive industries however, because there isn't a big industrial footprint there aren't that many young people walking around. No industry=organic food and lots of long living old folks however it also= not enough jobs for the younger generations= low birthrate for the region= problems in the future.

Very interesting, I share a gene that predisposes one to living beyond a hundred it is only found in a very small Italian mountain population & another, the same gene, in a small number of Chinese. I do have some genealogy from Italy, to be precise Tuscany. I can’t remember the name of the mountain area in Italy. But life style is also extremely important. Being active & having continued challenges & ambitions definitely contributes to a longer & more meaningful & fulfilling life.

@@a.d.7922 Good Evening. I turned 81 some two months ago. I go to the gym twice per day, seven days per week. I only eat organic foods. I also take 30 GMs (30,000 MGs) of vitamin-c every day. I do not get sick and go out in the fresh air every day for walks as well. I do work every day as a medical and cancer researcher. My body is in great shape for my age, and my mind is as sharp as it ever has been. I plan to continue my daily routine including working to help others, until the day I die. I practice the same regimen as my dad, and he lived until 97 years old. I consume no chemicals from heavily preserved foods. I stay away from the doctors and do not take any vaccines, most of which are not vaccines but experiments in gene technology !!! I live a simple life style, and unless I do something stupid like jumping out of an airplane that works with a parachute that may not, I should live to at least 100+ years old !!! Thank you for your kind words and thoughts. I am always happy to help in any way that I can, anyone that comes to me for advice about life and medicine !!!

Also in Okinawa which is one of the blue zone, the young people start to eat like American and guess what ? Okinawa has the longest life expectancy in the world but the highest rate of obesity and diabetes in Japan.
