Today, we have quite a special video to share with you as we had the great privilege of following the full restoration carried on an original Ferdinand Berthoud Marine Chronometer, a timekeeping device of historical significance.
This impressive restoration includes not only the mechanical elements of this fabulous machine, but also the carpentry of its original wooden box.
This video was done on the course of several months and we are really delighted to have had this opportunity and being able to share this behind the scene story with you.
Enjoy and Viva beautiful Watchmaking restoration!

I love Ferdinand Berthoud’s watches. They are unconventional and look like scientific instruments, but in a very cool way. One of my favorite watchmakers.

Fantastic, thanks Marc, really great. Ferdinand Berthoud was a meticulous worker who not only created excellent timepieces but also carefully observed and documented what affected their performance. He was he first to tabulate in 1773 the effects of temperature, and in 1778 observed the middle temperature error. How wonderful to see one of his "lost" timepieces found and restored.

Wonderful video Marc, thanks so much for sharing it. I've always been fascinated by marine chronometers since reading about John Harrison and his work. Most people don't realize how important these clocks were in navigation, after all, most ships traveled beyond cell phone signal ;-) . It's amazing to see the lengths the restorers went to in keeping the originality of the piece, even to the point of keeping the timing of the case hinge screws. True craftsmen! Love to see more of this sort of content, perhaps with an explanation of the escapement and how it works. Perhaps you could devote a video on the JLC Atmos on your shelf, they are fascinating. Once again, merci!
