This video should be a lesson or inspiration to all movie critics, the way you two convey and then separate the film from yourselves is incredible and we rarely get to see objectivity the way it's displayed here. I loved this movie. Just got back from seeing it. I watched the first 9 mins of this video and turned it off. Going to finish after I post this comment. Bc of your comments about tempering expectations, I was able to sink down into the murky darkness that is this movie and let it take me along. When there was a scare, I almost jumped out of my skin! I was completely intrigued by how they filmed it: the faraway angles, different aspect ratios to denote time changes. Incredible creepy atmosphere. The lighting. And the lore! I hope there’s a way to dig deeper into this film. Maybe with extras. I really enjoyed myself. Thanks to both of you.

I really liked this one as well. The marketing didn't hurt it for me because I've seen some of Perkins' other films and knew what to expect. I was thoroughly engaged throughout, from start to finish. I WILL say I think Perkins dropped the ball writing wise once or twice along the way, particularly when it comes to Maika's actions in the finale but I won't say more than that.

I get what you’re saying. I think I’m going to love this one. Yeah I find The Conjuring pretty scary, but that’s mostly due the effectiveness of the well thought out jump scares. But the concept of a haunted house, is not a thing that truly scares me. A lot of people hate movies like Hereditary, Midsommar, etc. But rave at a standard big budget slasher. I’m the other way around. Not that I’m better or anything. But my own fears are more psychological than being in fear of a mute brute with a steak knife lol.

@SinisterCinemaReviews I’ll definitely let you know what I think tomorrow, I would have loved to see this already but, not driving myself kind of limits when I can get out to movies and stuff so, at least I am getting around to seeing it in theaters and not waiting until streaming like I have to. I have to say your review kind of allowed me to go in with kind of tempered expectations as I had to kind of shift my expectations because, I kind of thought, much like you were saying that it would be a silence of the lambs type thriller and it seems like on a surface level that, comparison isn’t too far off but the deeper you get into the runtime the further from that baseline comparison it gets so, that’s good that I listened to your spoiler free review. I remember not really caring for Gretel and Hansel but, I think that’s just because from the trailer I expected a more in your face loud and bombastic horror take on the classic fairy tale but, that’s not what I got so, I am kind of glad I had a chance to sort of switch my expectations going in tomorrow to something that is more in line with what it sounds like the film is giving me.

I think it was like a 3-3.5/5. Nothing groundbreaking, although it did have atmosphere and great acting. The problem was that this movie was predicated on a mystery, and about 90% of that mystery is very easy to figure out. It's like super obvious in the first 20ish minutes or so. It almost felt like they were spoon feeding it to me as the viewer. The other issue was the 10% that I couldn't figure out was WELL WORN territory (the satanic stuff), especially this year. And that revelation came in sort of a lazy exposition dump at the end. But that said, it was well executed for the most part. I just think it could have used a better story overall.

For most of my life (until 2016, I guess or 2017), I was obsessed with the moviegoing experience - I would go several times a month (at least once a week, maybe more) and I would always see 2 at a time per visit (I am a movie thief!). I didn't care about price or whatever. I even worked at movie theaters for years so I could see more! I loved how those around me reacted. The experience started changing before that time, but up until that time, I endured it. After that, I was done. I miss the big screen, the sound, the darkness, etc. But I do not miss: people going in and out of the theater, as you say (that became a regular occurrence everywhere), the noisiness of people (and kicking of chairs), the darn phone glare - I almost hate blue lights because of how sick I became of that, people bringing screaming babies at midnight R films (who does this?); people that didn't react the way I expected - they didn't laugh at funny (intentionally or unintentionally), they didn't scream or gasp or anything; just nothing. COVID made it easy to say never again. So I won't go back. I became that streaming person because it allows me to just have my own singular experience now. I can make it dark in the room if I want or not and just experience and love or hate or yell at the screen or not. Laugh, cower, yell whatever. It is mine and that is sad and wonderful at the same time.

Great review, guys. Jason, I dig your channel and like it even more now with Cali's (spelling? forgive) contributions. I must admit this: as painful as it is to say, with Psycho as my favorite all time film and Norman Bates my #1 villain, Oz Perkins has never quite captured me as an actor or director. Something is always missing for me. His father was a horror icon, and I'm trying not to unfairly impose any expectations on Oz. You mentioned both Ti West's MaXXXine and Perkins' Longlegs as 2024's most anticipated films of the year. For me, they are different but BOTH directors tend to have great buildup with lackluster payoff to end their movies. I've felt underwhelmed with Oz's few films up to this point. Good strong elements but lacking in others....not quite delivering in the end. Yes, I enjoy a good, slow burn, but those need a great ending even MORE than a traditionally paced horror, in my opinion. Will check out both MaXXXine & Longlegs after the craze dies down.

I only wish this movie went HARDER in the third act... Like, I expected more out of the final act, with more, well, horror... And satan, and darker demonic things, with bigger stakes. The movie also covers a very dark subject matter (child murder) and for such a dark subject, I felt the movie was... Kinda tame?... Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but I expected it to be meaner, more showing, and more merciless. Especially, again, the third act I felt was pretty tame. All in all, didn't quite live up to the hype I had, but I still enjoyed it.

I am so in your camp on this film....so, very good, but will alienate a bunch of people, partly based on expectation. Of all of the '90's movie references, the one that I think is most apt, and won't get mentioned much, is Kurosawa's Cure. I love this movie and think my appreciation will only deepen on rewatches. Also, low-key, really dark, dark comedy at moments (the scene with the little girl in her bedroom...the scene with Cage buying stuff from a young woman).

While I understand the comparison to Silence of the Lambs, I thought the film had more of a Sinister vibe. It had the intrigue of the crime mystery, but also I constantly kept feeling nervous. And just like you both mentioned, all the technical filming elements like the camera angles and framing, and the sound design really gave the film its unsettling atmosphere. Also while Nicolas Cage was great in this movie, I thought Kiernan Skipka had a very underrated creepy performance in the little bit that she was on.

@ 6:41, Oz Perkins said he specifically wanted to "trick" audience members into thinking this was gonna be like The Silence Of The Lambs, so he could eventually take a sharp left turn. So he referenced it directly, throughout the tones, scenery, and story points, intentionally. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the reason why some posters said, "The best serial killer horror film since The Silence Of The Lambs." I think this was the director's original plan, all along.
@opaque4742
@opaque4742 Месяц назад
Clever, I caught that too, but this is the kind of thing I don't care for from directors. Certain movies deliberately mislead, and even 'cheat' at times. I am not upset at being surprised by a clever twist(s) set up properly or surprise developments but in order to entice viewers I think trickery is becoming commonplace. Eg: A lot of demonic possession or supernatural horror bills itself as psychological thriller and pulls out a supernatural 3rd act that 'we'll never guess" because the hints weren't there (haven't seen Longlegs yet)

My only experience with Oz Perkins has been Gretel & Hansel. I thought the only thing that film had going for it was the cinematography and the atmosphere but I found the overall experience to be extremely dull. To me it had no compelling performances or a plot that I found myself caring about. If I have those elements then the slow pace does not bother me at all. So my question is did you guys like Gretel and Hansel? I’m extremely hyped for Longlegs as this sub genre of film is possibly my favorite with Se7en, Zodiac, Red Dragon/Silence being absolute all time favorites of mine.

They reviewed Gretel and Hansel back in the day (iirc) and I think they liked it. I wasn't a fan of it at all, tbh, I guess mainly because I don't care about Gretel and Hansel in general. @arcticwolf6402
@arcticwolf6402 Месяц назад
Lol, you absolutely cannot reduce an entire experience of the movie to "slow-zoom through doorways." If that is how you view such movies and that is the expectation you go in with, then yeah, you won't like it. Literally any horror movie can be reduced to some simple negative sentence: "Oh, Silence of the Lambs is just police haunting down the killer," "Friday the 13th is just a masked man with weapon running around," "Hereditary - ugh, don't tell me this is another curse in the family thing..." If you can't appreciate the movie as a whole with all of its aspects and just view it as a simple "slow-zoom through doorways," then I don't think you like watching movies in the first place.
@kevinschmitt4050
@kevinschmitt4050 Месяц назад
@@arcticwolf6402 fair enough, but you can see something happen so much that it immediately breaks a movie’s spell. You can certainly reduce the term “elevated horror” to “slow-zoom through doorways horror.” I did watch the trailer and there was a slow-zoom through a window, so maybe the medium is growing in an artistic sense.
