Notes: In Mode 1 most of HUD could be put on the 2bpp BG3 layer to allow it to properly overlap the level visuals, with three 4bpp sprites used for the headshot, shuriken, and special attack. The two regular 4bpp backgrounds would be used for the two main layers as per usual, with the possibility to add additional colours there. And anywhere where sprites are currently used to fake a third background layer could just use part of BG3 again. Might even be possible to add additional parallax in some sections, since BG3 can span the whole width of the screen without affecting the max sprites per scanline limit that causes sprite flicker. There would be some mixing and matching of the order of the backgrounds based what makes sense for each specific level. The level at 7:59 could be done with Mode 0 with the HUD still fully overlapping there too, as the centre column actually scrolls at the same speed as one section of the skyscraper layers, so this can be put on a single background layer, which will allow everything to work with four layers without the need to use Mode 2 for column scrolling there. At 24:11 can use BG3 to have an additional layer of trees and improve the parallax and depth there, and adding a wee wavy/haze effect will create a sense of more intense heat too. Can use colour math to have proper transparency in some levels on things like water and fog, etc, like at 19:49 and 40:10, for a nicer look overall there.
28:00 how did you do that jump across the gap, i can't get it. edit: ok i figured it out :) completed this on the Switch Megadrive emulator. that last level was damn hard. i never played this when it first came out so was good to complete it. my memories are of shadow dancer and revenge of shinobi. i think i would have loved this game back in the day too.
The first time I saw this game was when I was 14 back in 1997 on the KGen emulator on my Dad's Pentium 122 business computer. If you want an authentic experience, turn playback to 0.5x speed.
They are bringing this back and I honestly HATE the way it looks compared to this....They just keep wrecking the best art styles of these classics. They could have gone back to this but just with updated graphics...It's all shell shaded and cartoony looking now. I dont think they got any flame for it though, but Golden Axe lol everyone attacked it for how ugly the characters are, and a lot of people aren't too happy with Streets Of Rage new art direction either, I think it's 3D and plays like those Marvel Alliance games...
