Ever notice how the entire soundtrack of the game has a central theme? A key phrase of notes that's used in almost every song. Sometimes it's in a different key, or sometimes is slightly a-modal to the chords, but the theme remains tight and it's always there! Such a brilliant soundtrack and one of the best in the history of gaming.
These compositions are on par with all the best jazz composers, progressive rock/metal composers I know. It is mindblowingly excepcional for a videogame, and almost a waste, seeing how underrated both the game and the music it are. A work of absolute genius.
+Watchmen22 I totally agree, back in the 90's I was always playing a crap ton of video games, but I always went outside and played for hours on end. Ohhh to be a kid again...
The music team is flexing so hard in this soundtrack. This is basically an untouchable soundtrack for the era, for both sound and composition. It's downright inspiring to me as a video game music maker.
Right! Dale, so many different types of music complexities found here and new heights of melody and harmonies that we could on;ly hope to attain. Shinobi 3 is in a class by itself!
I found this guy arranging the OST! He also has got a youtube channel... Shinobi 3 ost is TOP!!! m.soundcloud.com/video-game-music-arrangements-by-capricornx/sets/shinobi-iii-return-of-the-ninja-master-1
@@METALFACEDOOMXXXX This ost really resonates with the japanese ear, i am told. The kind who is so japanese that their voice sounded exactly like master splinter even when they were a little girl.
Woow memories in 90s me and my big brother playing this back in days in morocco such memories i remember that day friend of me he was snes fanboy get me to his friend house and changing cartgrige between us free i remmember giving him nba jam tournament edition and game called greendogs and he giving in exchange two guess what its shinobi 3 and comix zone my mind was blowing way with those 2 games one of the best experience that we have on our beloved sega megadrive as games mandara whirlwind Sakura 24:10 Shinobi 22:47 Idaten Solitary
Man oh man does this OST take me back - I can't help but smile. I used to love the song "Idaten" when you're running on the horse, and "My Dear D" used to scare me as a kid when you're fighting the boss in that second picture of the backside of the cover. Something about it just added to the creepiness of the boss design.
this entire soundtrack just effing SHREDS. its shreds SO HARD it's unbelievable for a sega game. Ninja Soul / Rush and Beat / My Dear D probably my favs, they go hard AF
I've never felt more like a ninja than I did playing this game. Years later I still play it, and regard it as the best game on the system (to me anyway). The gameplay, level design, flow, enemies, sound design and soundtrack are all fantastic. And after beating the game and listening the Sakura theme is the icing on the cake. Such a serene and melodic track after the intensity of Whirlwind, Idaten, Mandara and Shadow master which is Metal AF while facing a METAL AF Boss.
@@doninu Yes, and Yuzo performed live in Europe in 2018 (I think). It was called 'Streets of Rage Live' and you can watch / listen to the entire performance here on RU-vid, just search for Streets of Rage live and enjoy. He also plays music from The Revenge of Shinobi. The whole thing is amazing!
Thanks for going through the effort of doing this on legit Hardware - I can really hear the difference in "Solitary". A lot of emulators don't hold the notes as long as they should, and there is some noise that is usually cleaned out. Well, that's why they're emulators.
¡Ese sujeto si que sabe! Idaten es el más épico, ir con todo en el caballo, e ir corriendo a toda velocidad con katana en mano en el bosque que se incendia, adrenalina 100%
@@misterhimura036 Shinobi 3 is best action platformer of the 16-bit era. Revenge of Shinobi is great as well. When you consider it's 1989 release date just bonkers. Shadow Dancer is really good also just a different type of experience. I wish we got a a true sequel to Shonobi 3. The engine for that game was flawless and Sega should have milked it in a Mega Man esqe way.
@@charleshodge6920 It wasn't trash. Even Itagaki liked PS2 Shinobi, but it's still nowhere near as great as Itagaki's Ninja Gaiden. NG1 Black was basically Legend of Zelda for adults, lol. Too bad the sequels got rid of the Zelda style hub world.
HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE NOT LIKE THIS ? FIRST OFF THIS GAME OWNS CAUSE ITS SHINOBI IN GENERAL.NOT TO MENTION ITS ONE OF THE BEST GAME THEMES OF ALL TIME 30:38 OWNS ..... ALL THE TRACKS DO . RESPECT !
Possibly the best soundtrack on the entire Genesis library, including Streets of Rage 1 and 2. I remember hearing it and dying over so I could hear it again. Even though I could go to.thw sound test and listen to the songs, it's different when you are playing the game because it went with the game so much. Whirlwind is a damn classic hands down
I understand why a lot of YT channels just use emulators, it's a lot easier! That said, even though modern emulators are very close to perfect (I think Genesis Plus GX basically is perfect from a mathematical waveform generation standpoint), the coloration/filtering of the output isn't really emulated well yet. That little bit of distortion/noise/high end filtering makes a big difference to me.
One thing I've noticed on real hardware that I never heard on any emulators When you pause a game during play...The audio doesnt stop right away...There's always a little buffering time ending in some kind of distorsion...
Definitely one of the reasons i always look for OST rips recorded from real hardware. Hell i even recently got a Model 1 VA6 with the the High Definition Graphics text on top so i could listen to my games right from the headphone output
I always liked Mandara, but I especially love it ingame, when you're facing the sixth round final boss, when you first fight him with his illusionary image and then when you whack him enough times, the music switches from Hassou (also a good track) to Mandara. Has a strong feeling of a "shit just got real" moment.
the track starting at 45:30 was the level that you ride the jet ski is one of my favorite music tracks of all time in any video game wow great memories ty!!
Because that's pretty much your opinion even though Shinobi 3 music is damn good. But better than the ENTIRETY of Sonic's music. Yeah, either take off your nostalgia goggles or let folks know in advance next time. Also old comment I know.
@@zoned7609 You're in no position to insult anyone, kid. You don't see Shinobi get concerts dedicated to its music. The best it got was a couple of tunes from a STREETS OF RAGE concert and it was Revenge of Shinobi (given how Shinobi 3 wasn't done by Yuzo or Motohiro) so your point doesn't really stand.
@@dnmstarsi lmao the irony of you, a child, calling me a kid. Concerts? Holy shit, that's so cringe. Imagine attending a concert for Sonic the hedgehog music covers and admitting it online Also imagine getting so personally offended by a SUBJECTIVE OPINION that you try to argue about it like there's a "true" answer. It's an opinion, smoothbrain. Maybe learn what one is. Oh and nice handful of logical fallacies
It really didn't get much better than Whirlwind. Jesus that song is just intense and beautiful. Really made you re-think what FM Synth was capable of when you took the time to actually create something specifically for it.
Ive been coming to this channel ever since this OST has been uploaded on here. I come twice a year (maybe more) to remind myself of my roots if i ever feel lost. This is the best Video Game soundtrack.
Thanks for taking the time to use real hardware and ensure high quality recordings! Most other channels on RU-vid just use emulators and don't sound nearly as good.
I actually found this game at my local game store I frequently visit for only 5 dollars complete with manual and game and case. Still enjoy this game even when I was playing it back in 94 on the Genesis 2
11:22 has such an eerie feel to it. I love it. If I'm not mistaken, that song plays in the lab stage right? If so, it fits the mood perfectly. A creepy, dark laboratory with brains in jars that attack out of nowhere.
Anyone notice the leitmotif across some of the songs? Not sure if its sourced from the level intro BGM and/or "Inner Darkside" (which is built around it). Awesomeness.
Probably in the minority but I actually prefer this OST to Yuzo's Revenge of Shinobi, doesn't have anything as epic as 'Chinatown' but overall this edges it for me.
Definitely think this ost is overall stronger myself too, despite the quality of Revenge's ost. I think the Ninja fighting against evil vibe was better captured here than in the former. It feels epic throughout most of the game for me. You just can't beat Solitary, Whirlwind, My Dear D, Shadows, classic.
My thoughts exactly. Some themes have a comic super hero vibe which is pretty cool and fitting the stages of the game. Overall it is also better designed than Revenge in all the other aspects.
let me tell you then, that this one is superior because ros's ost was created before, so they had more tecnology when they created this one. but if they were made at The same time, ros was the best
So much of the music in these heavy plastic cartridges is absolutely relevant today. Just check the super eerie feel of 12:00 , with some kind of eastern synths melodies that come and go out of key, while a proggy D n' B base goes. Awesome piece lost in the middle of a 2 minute videogame stage! Whirlwind would be bought hands down by ANY power metal / heavy metal band and it would become an instant hymn. Fuck real music, I stick with the Motorola magic thanks
dogen If you can't hear the difference, you can't hear the difference. I was stuck with some crappy PC speakers for a while and I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between hardware and emulator, but when I got my powered monitor speakers back the difference was pretty obvious. It is in reality a small difference from modern emulators, so if they're good enough for you, then great. I do this because people seem to enjoy it, I never really planned to make this my thing. I'm not a big emulator fan not really because of inaccuracy but because playing in front of a computer with a flawless picture (or enhancement filters) and razor sharp sound doesn't feel right to me. I like Genesis Plus GX on the Wii OK though, I'd use it more if I could use a real controller with it though.
Never had this game but my favourite ever is R.O.S (console wise 16 bit) And my fav arcade game is shinobi tbh I much prefer these games to sonic and mario being a ninja is the best ❤️❤️❤️ subscribed for having stuff I love
