Great video! I always liked it for entering into stretto and I don't think the translations I use sum up why it works so well as the way you put it.

I noticed in some of your sparring videos, your Donna Sinestra seems to be quite low instead of on the shoulder like in the manuscripts, does that provide any special tactical advantage ?
@FedericoMalagutti
@FedericoMalagutti Год назад
That’s why I always try to pass the message of Poste as quadrants, and as tools which deliver actions and movement. A lower Donna si extra is closer to the line and better suited to deliver counters on tempo and thrusts.

@10:05 Is that "scambiare?" Google Translate tends to convert that to the English "exchange."
@FedericoMalagutti
@FedericoMalagutti Год назад
Yes, exchange. It’s a counter offensive action.

Cannot the word "sinestra" be translated in a different way, something like english "sinister"? Because clearly the position is not limited to left shoulder, as you say in the introduction, and as Fiore draws at the beginning. Maybe we were all misled just because the translator translated it as "on the left". That "sinestra" might not be about sides at all. (On the contrary, Posta di donna with arm above the eyes have reasons to be only on right shoulder, because on the left your eyes would be obscured by the lower hand). Also, Fiore always draws this posta with torso rotated quite far, like 90 degrees. From this position I have found it quite hard to react to opponent, because my hands and sword are just too far, and counter-cuts are too slow. Which is exact opposite of what Fiore says (posta should be great for traversing and exchanging thrusts). However I have later found that if you start your counter-cut by rotating torso, and then "drive" the generated force with hands, the cuts can be quite fast. Maybe this could be also the difference between basic Posta di donna, and Posta di donna sinestra? First one generates speed by pulling hands down and "shooting" the cut from the shoulder. The second one uses the body rotation. Both can generate speed and power by more means than just hands, which might be the reason why both are "pulsativa".

Well, considering that Fiore talks about finestra la sinestra and that sinestra is pretty straightforward (sinistra, in modern Italian, and sinister in modern Italia is sinistro for male and sinistra for female, so, same word) it clearly refer to it being sinistra. I’m Italian, the manual it’s basically 90-95%% close to modern Italian for me to read. Then the fact of it being sinistra and it being only extremely over the shoulder or not are two different things, in my opinion!

@@FedericoMalagutti That's a pity. I was just trying to make sense from the so many different posta di donna concepts in Fiore's images. Your distinction of "posta di donna over the head" and "posta di donna over the shoulder" seems to fit images better then "on the left" and "on the right" distinction that Fiore does in text (but not so much in images). A translation mistake seemed like a viable explanation, but alas! As for torso rotation in all images of posta di donna sinestra - do you ever use this posta with such extreme torso rotation? Do you think it helps to react to opponent's attacks (which is what this posta should be good at)? Because in my oppinion it does not. The only way I was able to make it work was starting reaction by rotating torso back, and use the rotation to generate speed and power. Because the same thing is not possible with "posta di donna over the head", it seemed to me like another distinction between these two ... additional to "one has more options then the other".

@@PetrKavan the images show the quadrant of the guard in the most understandable way for the reader (based on drawer skill) and in the most comfortable angle to show it. That’s why some are seen sideways, others from the back and so on. To me the image is not an enigma, it’s just there to clearly and extremely show the position. Then the use dictates the form of the guard.

@@FedericoMalagutti I know your idea "posta is a concept", and I pretty much agree with that. I used to have a period in other martial arts (karate), when I considered textbook positions as perfect and the only ones that should ever be used. It took me some time before I realized that the opposite is true - textbook positions are templates, meant to be adapted to your concrete situation in any way you see fit. So I have no objections to posta di donna sinestra used without any torso rotation at all. On the other hand, I don't think Fiore would draw torso rotation if it had no meaning at all, because all of his drawings are pretty realistic. He might have exaggerated it, but it would still mean that the rotation is something not to be missed. Also, deceiving action described by Fiore (take posta di donna sinestra, switch the sword over the head and thrust) is best done with maximum torso rotation, when the tip of the sword went almost all the way around. The less rotation, the harder it is to do this. OK, nothing more to solve here. Thanks for a discussion and ideas. I will try to experiment with torso rotation more, maybe I'll find some reason there, and a way to make it work.

10:08 - these examples of what I'd call left zwerhewen - do you find that particular execution safe enough? I mean don't you get cut on the glove? Or on the head? Or maybe this is good enough due to height difference between you two?
@FedericoMalagutti
@FedericoMalagutti Год назад
I take for granted that whoever tries it out will try to avoid getting hit while landing it. Changing the angle in a way or the other if necessary. This is true for every technique, not only this one. That said, I personally prefer to land the “flat version” of that action!
