I agree man! I definitely didn’t intend to hit the table, but it showed how well the blade can hold up. I hope you are having an awesome week, my friend!
I’d choose the gladiator sword. Though im a two handed weapon kind of guy i’ve been thinking about snagginng a Jian or a tai chi dao. Excellent video as always, Kyle love your content and i hope to make a purchase soon.
Thanks so much James! I agree with you…I’d take the Roman gladius sword over the longsword as well because I had way more control with it. I hope you are having an awesome week, my friend!
I love your videos u r a amazing person, u keep me going in the week knowing that weapons Wednesday is coming, I would chose both I can’t decide keep up the amazing work Kyle
Kyle, you have the whole package, besides skill. Sincerity, excitement, and your "oh cool" makes for great videos. I think if someone was drowning in a lake, they'd still buy a bottle of water from you as they're sinking! Good stuff Kyle, have a great week!
You crack me up man! Thank you so much for saying that! I just finished taping next weeks video and had a lot of fun recording it (it’s a little different). I hope you have an awesome week, my friend!
I love the sword testing arena ⚔️🍉👏👏👏🍍⚔️.Yep, it's polypropylene, but there is no way I'd want to get hit with it, and I believe it could slash you as well. The modern-day gladiator sword is awesome and the black finish would hide any light refection ; you may have to go for non carbonated drinks, possibly put red food dye in it before you shoot the scene a dramatic visual affect for sure. The Knight's Templar sword, "Wow,it certainly looks the part, and price wise, I've looked around you wouldn't beat your price, and the blade is spectacular it does look well made. Another great episode, Kyle, thanks .🙋🦘👏👏👏🥂
Thanks buddy! I really appreciate that! The food dye is an excellent idea! I was considering colored sodas, but didn’t want to get everything sticky. I just recorded next weeks video yesterday and used something a little different. Thanks so much for all your support, my friend! I really appreciate it!
Beautiful additions!! Awe man, I may be buying myself a present from Karatemart! Love the channel bud! ❤️. Seriously is favorite weaponry channel! You sold me escrima, nunchucks, and stars. All of which I'm 100% happy with! Keep em coming! I hope you are still doing okay too! Your pops would be very proud, my friend!
Thanks Justin! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your support and your kind words, brother! That means a lot man. I hope you are having an excellent weekend, my friend!
Another great video! I've been pretty busy the past month or so and haven't been able to catch your videos, but maaaan have I missed them & you, lol! Seeing your videos always bring a smile to my face. Keep up the awesome work!
I wasn’t used to the weight of a medieval longsword, so it felt a little awkward to swing. The Roman sword had such a nice weight and balance to it. I’m sure there are many people who would choose the longsword, but I definitely liked the speed of the Roman sword better. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
Great swords! I like to cut up milk jugs full of water with my katana. Still get the splash effect but can see the cleanliness of the cuts as well, often get a few hits per jug.
Awesome blades Shinobi!! I finally found the tabi boots and can't wait😎☯️ I'm about to make another purchase, just wanted to know if you guys have the Tai chi socks for those Kung Fu shoes if not no worries...thanks for the content and the merch 🥷🙂
Thank you so much! That is so kind of you to say! We sell tabi socks, but unfortunately do not sell Taichi socks. That’s probably something we should start manufacturing. Thank you so much for your support! I really appreciate it!
You do great work man! I have been looking for a good supplier that makes quality martial arts gear and I’m glad I saw your videos! I’m in the navy but I work as the medic for the marines, do you guys ever have any compact multi-tools with scissors on them because the only ones I see are made by leatherman and I know that you manufacture your own equipment so I thought it would be a good product for your company to look into!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! Strangely enough, we just got a new compact multi-tool, but we don’t manufacture it ourselves. It looked pretty nice, but I don’t remember if it had a scissors. That may be something we should consider manufacturing ourselves. Thank you so much for all of your support. I really do appreciate it.
@@Karatemart Thank you and have an excellent week yourself, man! :) I was just looking at your site. That Stealth blowgun Ninja To, is something I must own, but something tells me, you dont ship to Denmark.. :(
@@carstentilsgren2079 I’m not a huge fan of that sword, but it looks kinda cool. I’m pretty sure we do ship to Denmark, but only items that are legal there. Feel free to email our customer service team if there is ever anything you want to order, but either way, I just really appreciate your support. Have an awesome week, my friend!
Lol….I got pretty soaked making this video. I’m recording my new video today and am trying something a little different. I hope you are having an awesome week, my friend!
3lb 10oz is a bit heavy for a longsword. 2lb 3oz - 4lb is an approximate weight range rule of thumb. But what matters a lot is the point of balance. A heavier sword with a POB close to the guard can feel lighter to use than a lighter sword with a POB further out from the guard.
@@Karatemart no problem! Although in use there are many similarities between longsword & katana...in design, how to cut, balance, etc they can be quite a bit different.
The usefulness of a weapon is determined by its tactical purpose. I like the longsword [although it's pretty heavy, even for a longsword], but I wouldn't use it for defense in a residence, for example. That plastic gladius looks fun, but maybe a little longer than historical examples? The gladiator sword is pretty nice.
I completely agree! I would take the control of the gladius sword over the longsword as well. I may be wrong, but from what I’ve read, gladius swords were around 2 feet in length (sometimes longer), so the gladius sword in the video (24”) is right around the same size. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it!
I have a friend , and we all know people like this , all they will buy sword wise are Katana. I say why limit yourself from more form and function, you can even learn more about your Katana from using other swords , his eyeys opened when I beat him in cutting with my Celtic sword from Traditional Filipino Weapons .Witch I so lucked out on buying from Ebay , a Dr used it as a wall hanger in his office and was redecorating so instead of $400 I got it for $120 after everything and was very happy with that . I tried and liked the Condor Tactical Gladius but really like the Honshu Boshin Gladius in D2 .
I'd prefer a shorter handle and a rigid sheath for the "modern gladiator sword." Would be cool if they could figure out a way to have a reversible knuckle duster. Like if one side goes full, you could pull the guard off and put it on the other side.
To answer your specific question, the sword that I would choose would depend on my use. If I were buying a sword for model photography, I would get the longsword. That's a beautiful sword and beautifully simple in appearance. I don't care for swords that look highly decorated. I think that takes away from what I usually want in my photography. If I were buying a sword for self-defense, I would lean towards the modern gladiator sword. While the longsword would be better if I knew that I was going to have to go outside and fight a duel, that's not realistic. If I need that much range and know that I'll need to fight, I'm better off getting a spear, a halberd, or something of that nature. A more likely fight scenario these days is one where I can't just carry around a longsword. The modern gladiator sword would be a tight fit in a backpack, but it could fit. If an ugly situation arose and I had a little bit of time, I could retrieve it from the backpack and try to face whatever was coming. Standing in the middle of the street trying to face a group of attackers with a longsword probably won't end well for the defender. Moving stealthily through alleys and buildings offers a much higher chance of survival. Again, the modern gladiator sword is more likely to be with me, and I could carry it more stealthily as I tried to escape an ugly situation. If I had to resort to the sword, it would still be a formidable weapon. If I were buying for a prepper scenario, I would also lean towards the modern gladiator sword. A prepper who tries to fight by standing in an open field and engaging in a classic sword fight is a prepper who isn't going to last long. The longsword was designed for knights in full armor who would meet on the battlefields of old Europe. That's going to be very different from meeting people in any kind of post-apocalyptic world. In that world, stealth will be important, and the modern gladiator sword would offer that stealth. I also think that the modern gladiator sword would function well enough as a machete. I wouldn't try chopping branches with it if I had a choice, but for light brush, I think it could do a good job.
I'm going to break up my comments (assuming that I decide to comment beyond my first thoughts about the polypropylene gladius). That might be a durable training sword, but if the sword is going to be prone to failure, I think the failure will happen where that round tang connects to the blade. The connection doesn't seem to have much radius, and that will concentrate stresses. If these are going to break, I think that they will break from fatigue fracture at that point. I don't know how many blows will be required to make and propagate that fatigue crack, but that would be my guess on a failure mode. If you have any influence with the manufacturer, you might suggest that they redesign the sword a little to create a highly tapered transition there. Another consideration for the polypropylene gladius would be to have the blade made from a gray or slightly silvered polypropylene. That could probably be accomplished just by putting less carbon black into the compounding of the polypropylene. I see a couple of advantages to doing this. The first is that it would be easier to see in training. While I guess some people would find it enjoyable to have a difficult to see sword when engaged in training, I think taking that kind of advantage is poor form. The second is that these swords could become more popular with various ComicCon groups if they had a more realistic look. I've heard of people going to ComicCons in some states and having metal swords. Even though the swords weren't sharpened, some police have harassed the people with these swords because the state has officially banned swords in public. Maybe some police would still try to apply that law to a sword made of polypropylene, but I think most police know that if they made a big deal of someone carrying a polypropylene sword that they would likely end up looking foolish. If you give these swords a more realistic look, they might become more popular with people who want to wear swords to these conventions but aren't allowed to have metal swords in their states. When I learned of this problem with having swords in public, I bought a polypropylene practice sword from some website and spray painted the blade. I wanted to have something that I could take when I went to the state that had that prohibition. I'm a photographer, and I sometimes want to photograph models with swords. I prefer a model with a regular metal sword, but if that's likely to cause a problem with the police, I'd rather just have a polypropylene sword that looks more realistic. Granted, even that can't stop every problem with every "Karen" out there, but it will help. My spray paint job was good enough and could be edited to be better after the shoot, but having something that was made in better colors from the beginning would be helpful.
It depends on the fighting arena. If you're stuck in an area of limited space - a hallway or small room - the Roman sword is the way to go. If you have a lot of space around you and you don't have to worry about accidentally hitting your allies/friends, then go for the longsword. However, since you often don't get to actually choose your battlefield, I would say the short sword. Not necessarily the Roman sword, maybe something like a wakazashi, but a short sword nonetheless. A short sword is not as impressive as a longsword, but it's still deadly. It's smaller and lighter, so it's easier to carry on those long quests. Being lighter, it's also easier to wield over the course of a long, tiring battle. It works better in confined spaces (as already noted above). It can be worn at your hip, just over your shoulder, or attached to a backpack. If it's lost or destroyed on a trip gathering supplies during a zombie uprising, it can be easily replaced at a hardware store be a machete without the need for major adjustments adapting down from a longsword (as a short sword and machete are often about the same size). If your sword arm is wounded, you can switch to the other with less difficulty if necessary. I can think of other reasons for choosing a short sword over a longsword, but my phone battery is running low. In conclusion, sure, a longsword looks more badass, and I've got a few of them, but I think my short swords are more versatile.
My fav was probably the broad sword? The other part of the vid I liked was the one when you were wearing the safety glasses I thought it was funny. It was almost a funny as that time you set up those ninja trip wires around your office. In previous vids you said you were from Winconsin? Do you have Welsh heritage?
Thanks buddy! Watching the video, I kinda got that Clark Kent vibe from wearing those glasses. As far as I know, I don’t have any Welsh heritage. My great grandparents were from Sweden and Germany, but you never know. I hope you have an awesome week my friend! Thanks so much for your continued support. It means a lot to me!
It's cool that you give the sample weapons to employees. Have you ever taken those weapons and auctioned them off to raise money for a charity of your choosing ? Cool videos. Love that you really know these weapons and obviously know how to use them.
Thanks Michael! We definitely give to local charities and even have a section of the building set aside where employees are encouraged to grab supplies to make care packages for homeless people, but one of the perks of working here is that you get free weapons that are messed up during filming. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
@@Karatemart Well sir all I can say is keep up the good work. With everything. I love the videos. I love all the weapons but I have always been fascinated with batons and bow staff. Again, thank you for the reply and the videos.
Each sword had its own style of combat, but each is iconic to the representative time. So depending on if I was in an enclosed space, limiting my movements, I would choose the Gladius, more open space with full ranged movement, I would choose the Hand 1/2
For the time that was pretty high tech, using physics to give the sword a harder swing while still being able to thrust quite effectively. I’ll probably put the trainer sword on my Christmas list haha and then maybe grab that really cool one you had out. I’ve only seen a few of your weapons videos so far but I like them. I’m gonna check out the rest of your channel. I saw the one with the poly spiked club, have you thought about weighting the end of it? I’m training with weighted clubs right now and I love that one but it seems like it would be much lighter than I’m used to.
@@murrayrothtard6072 thanks Murray! I really appreciate the support! No, unfortunately I haven’t weighed the end of that, but if there are any weapons you’d like additional info on, please feel free to contact our customer service team anytime and they will be able to help you out. I hope you are having a fantastic week!
It has such a great weight to it! I had way more control with the Roman sword than the longsword. To be fair though, I’ve never used a longsword before, so I’m not used to that kind of weight and balance. Thanks so much for watching, Joel! I hope you have a great weekend!
So does anyone know if Polypropylene swords are permitted at a Comic-Con? I have a costume design in mind and the Gladius' look is actually perfect for what I want. But I'm worried about being flagged for my sword being too sharp- any advice is appreciated.
That’s an excellent question, Ben. The rules keep changing at Comic-Con and they may be different depending on which one you attend, but last I checked, they were restricted. I would check the website for the one you are hoping to attend. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
Thanks buddy! Yeah, I went a little crazy with the carbonated water this week. I just finished recording next weeks video and we came up with something new to slice😊. I hope you have an awesome week, my friend!
I completely agree, John! I love the control I had with the gladius sword and would take that over the longsword. But, to be fair, I don’t have any experience using a sword that heavy, so I can see why many people would choose the longsword. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
Hahahaha! I should have better control than that! I’m just not used to swinging a sword that heavy! Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
Thank you so much, Ahmed! I really appreciate that! We do ship internationally, but we have to check the laws in a country before shipping anything there. Please visit www.KarateMart.com/international for more details. Thanks so much for watching!
Good video. if you are comparing long sword with the gladius (assuming they are same quality) which is better depends on what you are using it for. I think the gladius was easier to handle because blade was probably thinner. But at same blade width a longsword would only be slightly more difficult to handle also its meant to be used mostly with two hands. as far as which I would want to have it once again depends on the purpose. Gladius is easier to carry and easier to conceal. In a modern self defense situation I would choose the gladius. but as far as sword to sword combat long sword wins easily because of its much longer reach. Some believe that gladius is the best sword in history. but in reality by itself is not the best sword for sword to sword combat. the reason why it proved so effective for Roman legions is because it was always used with huge tower shield that Romans had. in that combination it was very deadly especially at close range. now in modern times we would not use Roman shields or longswords because they would be too difficult to carry. So in modern self defense situation you would use gladius. And this one looks to be well made. (I'm not an expert on swords and I know even less about types of steel and actual process of making a sword but this one seems good to me)
Awesome Bart! I always learn so much for you! As always, thank you so much for your insight. I really appreciate it, my friend. I hope you are having an excellent week!
That’s a great question, Kyle! Both are 1060 carbon steel and have great blades. The big difference is their size and weight. I had so much control with the Roman sword that I would probably choose that. The longsword is awesome, but I’ve never used one before, so the weight would take some getting used to, and you will see in the video that I had difficulty controlling a sword that size.
Need both. Two different types of weapon. Long sword for open area fights. Needs specs to be swung around. The Gladias is better for close in fighting. In a fight you could get the Long Sword knocked out your hand and Gladias is now your weapon And by Military doctrine. Two is one, one is none
That’s an excellent choice, Benjamin! I would probably choose the same because it is lightweight and easy to control. Thanks so much for watching and have an excellent weekend!
The Roman Gladius has a removable pommel to end the enemy Rightly that is where you remove the pommel then throw it at someone it's a sword joke Skallagrim has a video on.
I’m with you man! I liked the control I had with the Roman sword. The longsword was a bit too heavy, but I’m sure with some practice you could get used to it. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
I agree man! I wasn’t used to using a sword as heavy as the longsword, so it was a little difficult for me to swing properly, but I think with some practice, it would be a very capable weapon. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
That is true! I’m a very firm Christian, but as a martial artist, I’ve loved weapons my entire life. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
@@Karatemart well I haven't sparred in years, due to lack of partners mostly. But I started teaching myself my own form of longsword in 1990 then around the early 2000s I began learning about the medieval manuals & learning from them. My earlier style was a good base but was very simplified in compairison. While I've had no formal training outside a couple seminars in 2001 & 2002 I've done well enough when sparing with people trained in fencing, kendo, kinjitsu, Chinese jian, SCA fighters & some HEMA guys. My biggest issue now in training is old injuries. I have no cartilage in my knees & some days have pain walking...but still have more weight to loose before I can get replacement surgery. So my footwork suffers which definitely makes me less formidable. But I do ok.
Glad you don't sell that "Viking" sword..yikes! I've seen swords bend towards the flat at the tang, but bending towards the edge is definitely a red flag! But it does show that you are not just willing to sell anything & care about quality! For better for worse that style of sword I've seen several makers make it's a generic pattern. I've seen some versions that were decent, others that were clearly just wall hangers & some that were just junk. So sometimes it can be hard to tell if you have a sword that looks like that if it's any good.
Exactly! I used to just take the manufacturers word on the quality of their swords, but nowadays I test everything out because there is so much junk out there!
I want to see these used on those body gels. I know they're spendy, but there is red liquid inside so resembles blood and RU-vid May not like that. I've seen on other channels and thought it was cool.
I wish we could, Ron, but you are absolutely correct that those dummies are extremely expensive and when we make these videos every week as a small business, it wouldn’t be worth it. Thank you so much for your suggestion though!
