In my quest to bring you interesting topics, concepts and ideas, the new Longsword! video will show&tell about Streichen, a quite obscure technique which is mentioned often indirectly in the sources. Hope you will like it and hope it'll help you in your studies. Yeah and Ciri says hi. Thanks to Dustin Reagan and to guys from Bratislavský šermiarsky spolok for help :)

Hi, In Fechtbuch: Making of KCD Robert Washka recomended your and Ondřej Vodička's book "Šerm majstra Lichtenauera" but in my country (Czech Republic) its already sold out... Is there any way to get this book althrough this problem? Thanks for your time in advance!

Interesting point about that: "You should maintain the least amount of time possible in the bind". Until now I thought that while staying in the bind you know/feel where the opponent's sword is. Although while in a bind, the opponent knows where YOUR sword is. So not staying in the bind for too long is beneficial.
@MartinFabian
@MartinFabian 5 лет назад
Some things are ambivalent. Bind is great but at the same time isn't. We should utilize every touch to the max.

Hi Martin, I have a question. For the first play, instead of winding in a cut with a duplieren could you substitute a thrust from the upper right hanging instead? I know it isn’t canonical but I’m curious if you think it makes technical/tactical sense
@MartinFabian
@MartinFabian 5 лет назад
Hello Evelyn! Yes you could but the bind would have to occur in a way that there's an opening for a thrust. Your opponent has - most of the times - an upper hand in this because their weapon is bound from above and they are stronger. Going into a right ochs thrust would mean pushing against them which might be a bit harder compared to if the bind occured after cutting two similar cuts from above.

Something I've been wondering is what the purpose in learning the longsword would be if a different weapon - spear, or perhaps poleaxe - is objectively better (being referred to as "the king of the battlefield")?
@ColossalSwordFormAndTechnique
@ColossalSwordFormAndTechnique 5 лет назад
Faster and sexier, and everyone knows the sword is more famous than the heavier slower weapons. Sure the spear can easily stab an opponent, but it's not as fun on the swing cuts. Sure the bardiche polearm poleaxe is pokey and strong and powerful, but it is a bit slow. Everyone chooses the sword, because it looks cooler and cuts and thrusts faster especially when mixing combos. If you desire reach, just get the,"Scandanavian Greatsword". Almost same reach as a spear or polearm bardiche or halberd.
@CoffeeSnep
@CoffeeSnep 5 лет назад
Polearms are always primary weapons because you cannot wear one, and thusly it must remain in your hands. Most swords, whether they be longswords, arming swords, falchions, rapiers, etc, are commonplace on the battlefield and very useful to have, but mostly as sidearms because they can be worn while still using the pole arm. If for whatever reason you need your sword, it is always there for you. This also makes swords much more practical as primary weapons in essentially every other context, as you usually cannot go about your daily life lugging a pollaxe around (it was usually illegal anyway). The exception to this rule are the larger "great sword" class of swords. They are so large that they served a purpose more like a pole arm did, and were carried and used as such. The largest sword that I could still consider a sidearm is the Marozzo style Spada Due Mani. It's not as long as great swords, but larger than other longswords. Still, I can wear and draw my 54 inch one one handed without much hastle, though I don't think I could if it were longer.
