This is the weirdest game of tennis I've ever seen.

I would love to watch a sparring match in a room full of cameras. So a completely dark room with the spotlight in the middle, and cameras in several angles so we can get a really cool sparring vid :D

And I gotta say, when I compare Kingdom Come Deliverance to this... it looks like especially the stances and way you hold the swords is pretty well made in the game. @Skallagrim I don't know if you talked about this already but would you like to have a look at KC:D's "master strikes" and "combos" and say how realistic they are? Because they even have historical names like Zornhau and such. (I hope you are not too annoyed yet by endless KC:D requests :P)

When i watch stuff like this i want to cry. I live in a small town in Bulgaria and we have only 2 HEMA clubs in the country so me and my friends are trying to make ourselves an improvised club. But we use wooden swords and heavy but well made shields and we have almost no protection (especially for the hands, ski gloves dot work. The gear is rely expensive ).And not to mention that one gay is using anime " techniques" while I'm trying to do the real thing, so yea he is the monster on the battlefield. And yes as im writing this useless comment ( that skall probably won't see ) i realise that WE ARE JUST FUCKED AND DOOMED never to manage to do what we love! Stay safe!

Some pretty good back and forth. Pretty good form. I've been teaching HEMA and martial arts weapons for 24 years and you guys are doing pretty well. Here is a tip, on an aggressive to over aggressive opponent, extend your arms to full, lower your body by bending ur knees about half way and having your weapon in a full thrust. This is an excellent impaling maneuver that will give you a solid thrusted attack. Make sure your feet are planted well and you keep balance in case your opponent is cattish and pulls away. If he does, then counter this with a horizontal swing to the legs about knee height. Try this and see for yourself. Keep up the good work, the education, the practice, and the love. Well done.

Watch that POV makes me appreciate the real techniques instead of movie scripted ones. It also shows you don’t need excessive flashy moves to make it look cool. The flow of the movement of swords is so beautiful and I can appreciate it much more knowing that every move has proper intention and not just random thrusts. It’s aesthetic and practical. You have done a lot of nice videos showing the strengths and weaknesses of weapons, armors and techniques, but I would like to suggest a few other topics I would like to hear some thoughts about. Skill vs numbers, how many intermediate or beginning soldiers with just few weeks of instruction would you need to take down an experienced or better-equipped soldier? Like, a few trained peasants with pitchforks vs a single armored highly trained knight. How would fighting from horseback differ from normal combat? Also, do NOT actually try that one. I say that for everyone who thinks about it, including everyone else that reads this comment. An easily scared animal is not something you want to have in a dangerous situation, or one that seems dangerous to the horse. I have ridden horses as a teenager and child. I am no expert, and haven't been in the saddle for years, but I know horses should not be used in combat without special training for both horse and rider. Ask someone who knows horses for ideas, or look it up in books, but actual practice is too dangerous for a simple video. If you prefer, chairots are also a nice topic. Many cultures used them until they got stirrups. Now I have one more subject to suggest, fighting on a ship, like in a boarding. How would the shaking of the ship affect your footwork? I once heard a story about the Dutch admiral de Ruyter that he covered his deck in butter to defeat pirates, do you think that would work? Please note that a large ship is more stable then a small boat, so keeo that in mind. Do NOT try a surfboard, that would be dangerous and most certainly ineffective anyway.

There you had an advantage because of the cam nobody wants to hit you to the head. And you are a very passiv fighter taking mostly retreating steps where your female counterpart is very streight forward. Very nice to see such differences in personal fighting styles!

I’d like to see video analyzing the combat system in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It’s obvious that the devs put a lot of effort into making it realistic and it would be cool to see if they actually succeeded in making the game accurate.

3:47 it's called Nachreisen ;) . BTW that first feint is not good :/ . Something called (I think, I'm not into English nomenclature too much) "tempo-strike" would help there. Basically, you don't move sword back, just slow it down to almost not moving, then strike the other way. If you back your sword like that it may work max once against a good opponent. After that, he'd pay attention to that and thrust you in the head the moment you back your sword. Very nice idea though, I'm looking forward to more videos like this. Keep on making progress :)

I saw you had a video on mosin nagants/ M91/30's all that excitement... then, I saw that you where using a round receiver instead of a hex. No wonder you where having troubles with it. Couldn't tell if you where using lacquered ammo, if so, switch to the copper plated. To remove the rings on the heat shield, use your right thumb to depress the spring and use a flat head screwdriver to push the ring over it (twisting may help) please read: ar-15 vs ak-47 vs Mosin nagant jokes they're kinda accurate

Interesting premise to maybe test in the future: How would it look like if a novice would spar with a more experienced swordsman, but the novice would have normal reach and the "expert" would have like a half sword, or maybe even just a dagger/knife thingy... So not a test of brute force (hopefully) but of timing and speed to cover distance with. Also, how would fatigue effect both parties... Just a thought from watching this. Both are clearly advanced as hell here.

I am no expert, but I noticed that you never use techniques like the Zornhau-Ort (from what I understand having watched some demonstration from Anton Kohutovic, sort of thrusting towards the opponent's chest while deflecting his sword). Is it because they are difficult to execute, or dangerous?

Strangely, you look way swifter with the longsword than you do with the rapiere, I would have expected the opposite. May it be because you practiced the longsword more ?

By the way Skall, I know I keep commenting about the Krumphau when you mention it in your videos, but I think you should make a video about it, given all the different interpretations of it.

Obviously this is training in a "closed" environment with safety equipment, etc. However, it does point out that if one were to hypothetically be placed into a duel with sharpened weapons, that most often both combatants would not come out unscathed, regardless of victor. TL;DR: The first rule of knife fighting is that you're going to get cut.

Why the FUCK can't swordfighting look like this in TV/Movies??

I like the fact that you are sparring at a slower (like 75%) speed. This is very precious and helps develop a good technique in combat if both fencers are disciplined and stick to the slower speed.

I think you need a better fencing jacket or a better fitted gambeson Skal , you could also just cheat by cutting the fencing jackets armpits and adding more fabric as a gusset. I did this to chainmail I assume it works well with heavy fabric too. My gambeson was already made that way though.

My training is on break right now because its a uni group and all the students are off atm :( In sparring I have an "issue" which i also kind of see you doing a lot: Rely a LOT on the "hanging point" - not sure if thats the english translation. Raised arms, hanging sword to defend high strikes on one side. It seems like thats a pattern throughout your group so i was wondering what you think about the advantages and disadvantages of that block. imo: reliable against cuts from top and one side with a lot of different counters to shift to while it really opens up the other side (left in your case mostly)

Are there ever any unarmed strikes in fencing duels? I know there was some wrestling, but what about kicks, knees, punches, and/or elbows?

Hey skall, big fan just a question really! In my area I have noticed all the hema groups put a heavy emphasis on the long sword and its use however in its time it really wasn't the primary weapon of the battlefield! Obviously the pole Axe, war hammers, etc etc were more widely used as they were far more effective at putting opponents down, however they put little emphasis on the use of these weapons. I mean I love the long sword but it really is over rated in how much it is taught and really think it should be more taught as part of a system of weapons of the time instead of this pseudo cultism people seem to have when they think of the sword, it seems they snob other weapons that were more effective or widely used! What's your thoughts on this and how hema is applied and taught?

I'no expert but, especially in the first match, aren't you a bit too close? You always have to parry with the sword really close to you

Really nice video! It would by nice to see you try to simulate the power of the hits you do while sparing in one of your cutting tests. Usually you go full power in those,it would give a better perspective to the damage those hits do in sparring

With this kind of protective gear, can you call it a "safe sport"? Or do you still risk serious injury?

Sorry if it's already been recommended, but I'd try a chest mount for the go pro. I used it for fishing and you get a good view of everything and the camera stays straight better

Can you elaborate on leg work needed for sparing , the various steps i think how fighters stand and move is very under discussed. For example redo the segments of this voicing over on the steps and positioning

You should do one wearing medieval garb. Mainly just to look cool, as the protection would not be as good.

I've seen kids playing a lot of different games on tennis courts, but I've never seen two dudes going at it with longswords.
