I’ve knitted over 50 yrs and have never seen anyone cast on like the common methods used today. I was taught to knit by fishermen that made their own nets. I hold the needle in my right hand and twist the yarn around one finger on my left hand. Learned something new, but I’m too used to my method and find these new methods awkward and I make a total mess, 😂

Don't pay any attention to the negative comments ... you did an amazing job in explaining this and mine turned out great. One thing I wanted to mention and that was how to determine the length of the long tail. My project called for 225 cast on stitches and I found it a lot easier to determine the length I needed by doing the math calculations which were easy to do. I found a tutorial for this on the internet. Thanks again for the great tutorial!
@sheepandstitch
@sheepandstitch 6 лет назад
Thanks so much for your kind words! Figuring out the length of the tail can be tricky. One trick you can try is to wrap the yarn around the needle the same number of times as the stitches you need. For example, if you need 225 cast on stitches, wrap the yarn around the needle 225 times. That length will be long enough to cast on 225 stitches. This trick works pretty well if you need to cast on less than 50 stitches. However, for more than 50 stitches, I find that this method gives you waaaay too much yarn tail. For your situation, I would cast on 20 stitches, undo the cast on, measure the length of yarn it took to cast on 20 stitches, and then multiply that length of yarn by 11 (20 sts x 11 = 220 sts). Then add a few more inches for those last five stitches. Hope that makes sense!

Ty so much for such an AMAZING learning video. I taught myself to crochet when I was around 8 years old but could never figure out knitting. And the few times I tried to learn it from someone they would show the technique way to fast and/or become irritated with my lack of skills. I'm extremely sensitive so when I'm around people who are angry, irritated or hostile in ANY way I become a nervous wreck and I cannot function in a hostile environment, so I gave up. However during the COVID lockdown I started to learn as much as I could from these amazing RU-vid videos 💕😀. It's as if I found the magic lamp on how to learn to do ANYTHING! Now there are SO MANY different videos for each new hobby especially for knitting, but I have to tell you that this particular video is simply the BEST video I have ever watched, explaining how to do the long tail cast on. Not only did I learn to do the cast on the first time I tried, but so did my 7yr old autistic daughter whom I hadn't realized was watching the video over my shoulder...lol. She has plastic knitting needles she got for Christmas this year and was following along. When I turned around she had already cast on 19 loops! Ty again!!!!🌸💕

You truly an amazing teacher. I hadn’t picked up my knitting needles in many years and it was as if I had forgotten how to knit properly, you have added back the zest to my life. 👏

The Sheep & Stitch tutorials are so helpful. I would never be able to concentrate on something that feels very complicated with out easy, specific steps with no other banter. Thank you for being concise, steady, repeating the steps, and doing so slowly, several times. I repeated portions of this video as I was doing a 123 stitch cast on - haha what am I thinking? Thank you for such wonderful tutorial videos.

So many methods for doing a long tail cast-on are so irritating, fidgety and time consuming (constantly changing hands, etc.,) that I’ve always hated it. You taught me to love it! Your method is so fluid, fast and fun. And both your tutorial and your videography are brilliant, so informative and enjoyable. Thanks very much!

This is the way my teacher, chris, taught me today. I liked him so much! Thank you for your amazing videos.
