Puttin' On the Style was a 1957 hit for skiffle artist Lonnie Donegan. It was recorded live at the London Palladium and released as a double A side along with Gamblin' Man and reached #1 in the UK charts in June and July 1957, where it spent two weeks in this position. This was the last record to reach the top of the charts that was only released in 78 format, the original Pye Nixa does not exist in 7" format although was re-released on a 7". The song was written by Norman Cazden, and produced by Alan Freeman and Michael Barclay.

My dad was born 1940. Died in March 2022. My girl grew up with her grandad singing Lonnie songs. It's her 16th birthday in April, I longed for him to sing putting on the style for her on her 16th. I feel so sad for them both ❤

Lonnie is the man who totally changed music. Without Lonnie there would have been no Merseybeat, no Beatles. He might not have taught the World to sing but he encouraged the world to form groups and play music. A major influence.

He’s still doing it from the great beyond, I’ve just learned this on my Ukulele, lm 65 now and remember this being played in our home when I was a kid, He was a great musician and performer I hope to learn more of his songs. 🇬🇧

He only changed the music in this country with his unique skiffle sound. Other pioneers of that era were already ahead of him. He was more popular for singing comedic songs like my old man's a dustman....

@@mariacanavan3305 Rubbish !! Though he changed the music in this country, people like Jimmy Page, Brian May, EltonJohn, The Beatles, The Stones and many more acknowledge Lonnie as the one that inspired them, so if it wasn't for Lonnie, the British invasion of America would not have happened ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pic_XLqR0Wg.html just listen to this version with the late great Rory Gallagher on guitar; it was taken of an album from 1978, where all the artists gave their services free as they named Lonnie as their inspiration; people like Elton John, Brian May , Gary Booker ( from Procol Harem) etc

Largely forgotten now but he had good taste with the material he covered and wrote great novelty songs. I always think of skiffle as the punk of its day as it was a back to basics, anyone can have a go approach. Him and Bert Weedon kick started what for the UK was to become one of its most successful export industries from a nation previously known more for words than music

John Lennon played this song with the Quarrymen at the Church Fete game n Liverpool the day he met Paul McCartney in 1957. The Skiffle music craze caused thousands of skiffle bands to form overnight in England, one of them being the Quarrymen.

Late 1950s, early 1960s. I can't remember when. Lonnie appeared with Chris Barber at the Barnet Jazz Club as guest performer. He had just released a record called "Have a Drink on Me" and I knew the words. During the interval a the local pub I started to sing the song. Lonnie was just a few drinkers away. He asked me if I had bought his record and I replied that I owned every record he had ever recorded. He asked, "What's your favourite?" and I said, "Bring a Little Water Sylvie." He said to the barman, "Get this man a drink. What's your name? Alan, you, have a drink on me!" That's my only claim to fame. Well, apart from the time I met Connie Francis.

Great. Lonnie was with Chris Barber even before he was called up and again after the war. As a solo act he was obviously massive worldwide but they remained friends after he went solo and he often did "re-unions".

I'm Norman Cazden's grandson and have some of his notes on the song from back in the day. He didn't actually write it, what he did was put to paper the performance of another guy by the name of Ernie Sagar in 1945 which drew on a bunch of other existing songs, as well as very similar song that had also been published in the 1920's. Norman later gave his version of the song to future folk-music legend Pete Seeger, who was a personal friend, and Seeger popularized it in New York, and from there it went to Britain and the skiffle scene. It's still a great tune, though.

And to think that there is a recording of a 16-year-old John Lennon performing this song with the band that years later would become one of the most influential in history that would revolutionize popular music forever... And it was played by same day that he would meet another young musician named Paul McCartney

CILLA BLACK goes to church just to see the boys, laughs and screams and giggles at every little noise, turns her face a little then turns her head a while but everybody knows she's only putting on the style. Putting on the agony putting on the style, that's what all the young folk are doing all the while as I look around me I sometimes have to smile seeing all the young folk putting on the style. STIRLING MOSS in the hot rod car driving like he's mad with a pair of yellow gloves he's borrowed from his dad he makes it roar so lively just to see his girlfriend smile but she only knows he's just putting on the style. IAN PAISLEY in the pulpit roars with all his might, sings Glory Hallelujah puts the folks all in a fright, now you may think it's Satan that's coming down the aisle, but it's only preacher Paisley is putting on his style.
