In the 70s, we didn't categorize the music. If we could dance to it, it sounded good, was funky, musicians were on point, singers were singing, that's all that was required.
Exactly right. Categorization is mainly done for commercial reasons, but I increasingly believe that you can at most say that there is music for different purposes, without attaching all kinds of labels to it.
Im sitting by a fire pit in back of my house. Just cooked two ribeyes over it with a tripod grill. And I’m enjoying a nice cigar with a Pinot noir watching the fire die as I listen to this on a blue tooth speaker. Wish you all were here with me. If you were, Id break out the Northern Lights and expand all of your minds. Peace.
I was a cab driver in Honolulu when this came out. Driving between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu at night is what comes back to my memories. The days of my youth.
This song is a favorite of all us older people. We love it, because it reminds us of how we were fine, living life, grooving with all the music, doing what we do!
A lady of at least 60 years of age, was playing this in her Merc convertible, while parked on my local high street. Her face lit up when I told her the name of this track, a kindred spirit she called me!
I two am 70 yrs old...this Jam brings peace to my spirit whenever I hear it...Back in da day, had the privilege to catch Lonnie perform expansions at village gate Greenwich Village downtown Manhattan...He blew the audience mind...They scream when he was done...

Song is 46 years old and still in the Coolness Hall of Fame. Indescribable how good this song makes me feel. I just know I'm in the wind when I hear it. That intro, that bass, the bongos, the drums and then Lonnie on that synth, then that voice "Expand Your MInd..." A song about love and peace and the brotherhood of man, ending with that plea "Expand Your MInd. Expand Your Mind." Masterpiece, Master Peace, To Everyone Joy and Peace.
Detroit was the Mecca...they had Motown... znd Lonnie .I was blessed to grow up in Chocolate City when it was, the HOWARD Theatre was on 6th St. I lived on 4th so I'd pass it ereday on the way to Jr.HS, I saw the Motown Review, James Brown and the Fabulous Flames, Gene Duke of Earl Chandler. Five Stairsteps, Unifics, I'm 76 July 1st but still with a Childs Heart as Stevie sang, ✌🏽 peace
Had this album when it first came out, now years later, it is still my all-time fave. It has gotten me through some rough times. Love, Joy, and Peace to all.
I had just moved to LA it was 1975 and happiness was i the air.Lonnie took us to another level of consciousness. That still has a resonating effect on me today. Thx My Brother for opening up our Minds. Amen
Lonnie is a Richmond, Virginia native along with his brothers Donald & Ray. Their father, Lonnie, Sr. sang with the legendary gospel group, "The Harmonizing Four". Donald is featured here on vocals and is also a accomplished pianist and flutist. Ray is the last original member of the "Jarmels" who made the song "A Little Bit of Soap". Just a bit of history from a homer.
William Squire Thanks for the insight from a homer :-) I wanna make sure I understand, this is NOT Lonnie singing? This is his brother Donald? I've always assumed this was Lonnie on vocals .... wow.
I’m 73 this month yes it still works and hits the spot every time , a timeless classic of a yearning for peace love and understanding for all mankind , lonnie was a cosmic messenger , some of us heard it but many never did 🎶💚❤️☮️💙 💜🎶

@@matthewbritton6960miss brother Gil so much. no disagreement whatsoever in your choice of tracks, always on rotation. search Gil's Midnight Band live recording from 77 and Bremen 83 for cosmic versions of The Bottle.
Couldn't agree more, been listening to this for as long as i can remember, years and years and years, at least once a week since, it's like a fix i need, it's one of those tracks you hear for the first time and completely blows you away.
As a PlayStation 2 player, this song literally gives me the chills when I play Grand Theft Auto Vice City. And that's how I became interested on Lonnie Liston Smith.
The kind of song you just put in your best work on the dance floor and your body movements make the statement for your. Love saves the day/The loft NYC. Thank you David (RIP).
Heard this in my car on Funky Friday on WXPN in Philly. The intro with triangle, bass, and congas hooked me completely. When I got home I tried to find the name of it on their playlist but it wasn't there. I was pissed! Took me at least five years after that to stumble across it on youtube. I was SO HAPPY!
Most of this era's music was about motivating love, on a global level!!! The positive energy vibe was what it was all about!!! LLS mastered the sound of positive vibes, much to our delight! Enjoyment of 40 a year now!
Brilliant 🎵🎶 powerful music of stressful barrier time in mind to expand. The Powerful deadline we all must fulfill before ending mortal lifetime on this universe. This brilliant sound of 🎵🎶 magnetic. You are great Maestro Liston!
This is my fave record of all time. I'm 65 years young now & I still feel the same about it ❤. Takes me back to my clubbing days when I would always go mental when this came on. I pop this on regularly & I can't sit still to it! Amazing ❤❤❤

Lonnie Liston Smith. Back in the early 70s, this is the music of my youth. This music was listened and appreciated by everybody. DA JAM!!!! I'm just saying.
Has there Ever been a Greater Dance Track ?!! The JazzFunkerteers from the clubs i frequented did moves to this tune that were sometimes UNBELIEVABLE. The greats of Tap dancing would have appreciated some of what these guys were doing i swear!! This Track caused dancing floors to erupt as soon as the opening cords were played. Gods i miss those days and those Dancers...Magical dancefloor times and this Track was the main forerunner. !! Will always LOVE IT and Tear up at the Memories !!!!
I'm now 67 and was listening to this back in my early youth. What drives this is basically the bass line which almost stays the same throughout along with the keyboards and Idris's vocals. Back then this did hit the number1 spot for best jazzfunk track and in one suvey it was pipped off the top by the crusaders "Put it where you want it". Still a timeless classic and I'm still playing it. Many thanks for the upload.
I was in College when this album was released...and all these years later it's still a GEM. Flying Dutchman had some great artists and some Classic recordings.
I was a freshman in college when I first heard this and it stayed with me all these years as perhaps the coolest soul stirring song ever. Certainly was part of my introduction to jazz during those glorious NYC WRVR 106.7 jazz radio days.
First time I hear this song I Was blast and blowing away and Update and amazing classic orchestra rocks and roll and club is brilliantly Nubian nation and Africa People hearing in New York city and back in day and years and now 1960-1970style and 1980-1990style 2000-2019styles. 😀😁😂😃😄😅😆
My favorite of his! We used to go to my brother from another's (Hank) house, put a towel on the floor to block the smoke from getting out..listen to this and other jams and get REAK NICE...Those very fond memories.
I was in my early 20s when I first things track. Blew my mind then, still does now . I'm 58, it's my all time favourite track to dance to. Takes me right back to the jazz room in clubs xxx
Lonnie Liston Smith was going through a very spiritual through his life. You can hear it in his music. He has been touched by the hand of God he has been truly blessed.
The people listening to his music back then were going through life in different ways. Lonnie's music gave us inspiration and hope because of his positivity. Positive music!
Iike how Lonnie started out at the beginning of the song with that funky keyboard sound and then just just laid back in the background but you can still here him in the background doing his thing he just lets the other musicians shine and showing their talents then at somewhere at 2:50 or 2:51 he cuts loose on his keyboard 🎹 again but never overshadowing the other musicians this is pure raw talent no doubt about it
I salute everyone over here for sharing their experiences with this tune. I''m glad that Ubisoft shared this joint with me through their Driver - Parallel Lines game. God bless everybody.
Yes I just love expansion by Lonnie listen Smith,it is on of the greatest jazz fusion funk ever I just love it ,and I love dancing jazz fusion jazz funk ,🌹
AMAZING!!!! My father use to play this original album in our home to expand our mind about jazz music....Then when I get older....I get my membership at the Paradise Garage....and everyone's jacking to the same song....feeling a totally different vibe to what I was taught......and it felt so good!!!! Wow.....how amazing it is to know how music makes you feel....deep inside!
The Paradise Garage! My uncle would tell me stories about that place. He said you didn't start heading there (we're from Brooklyn) until about 1am and wouldn't leave til about 7:30am! Now that's clubbin! He said people who wanted to see stars went to Studio 54...the real dancers partied at The Garage!
Hopefully your uncle mentioned a couple of things to you about the Loft as well, because there was a little of partying and dancing that went on there too!!!
My mind's eye still sees the moment I first heard this song in 1975, riding in a huge white Lincoln Mark IV with windows down, driving between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.
+Ranger Dan My mind's eye still sees the moment I first heard this song in 1986 cruising the streets of Vice City in my Infernus looking for prostitutes to kill.
+chownful I know it's all tongue in cheek but, man, what an ugly sentiment to be associating with such a lovely tune. Guess the lyrics didn't move you all that much.
This is so original, so futuristic, of its time can never tire of this track. Hairs standing on back of neck, goosepimples, heart racing, cant sit still, will not play on headphones in public for fear of being carted off and definatley certified. OUT OF THIIS WORLD MAN
Soul fusion at its finest, a cosmic experience when you listen to the genius of Lonnie Liston Smith, especially his early material on the Flying Dutchman label, space age Jazz Funk/Fusion of the highest order, this track Lonnie's finest moment, in terms of crossover sales, with the kicking bassline and conga, with keyboards vamped up top, the heavens open to make you Expand Your Mind
