Great video! Listen up new mechanics, my back and knees were shot in my 30s, SAVE SAVE SAVE! Retirement planning is so important in an industry that will beat you senseless everyday! I promise you'll appreciate those savings in you 50s more than that shiny toolbox in your 20s
Great video as usual. Two things on how busy they are is ask the tool truck drivers and waste oil recovery drivers. If they are collecting a lot of oil chances are they are busy. Also DO NOT IGNORE PENSION with 47 years in this job it’s surprising how quickly it flies by. I only started thinking at e0 but am comfortable fortunately. I can’t say the same for others. I can stop today if I want but love the job so much I will work as long as I can still perform at the top of my game. I mainly fix EV s these days and the qualifications for EV s involved a lot of maths and physics so keep developing.
I agree with this, When I got my new job little over 3.5 years ago I decided to live in a town that was an hour away as well and I was well paid and cost of living was very reasonable compared to the town the job was in and I just transferred to where I live and now my pay went up even more and still hold all the perks of my original spot.
That right there 🙌. A little less money to not hate your life 😂. I took an $ hourly hit at first 8 years ago to go to a government shop, but the government benefits I couldn’t beat! The holidays, insurance, etc… and now I’ve caught up $ hourly wise, life is good.
That drive time is a big consideration. My brother went from managing one place to mid-level at another and hardly lost anything once the drive was thrown in. That longer day and car expenses add up.
I am in a similar situation as you mentioned. I live in a lower cost of living town and commute an hour to my shop because the pay is better than anywhere by where I live and the shop is always busy. So basically most of the time I can make as many hours as my body is willing to let me most of the time. What sealed the deal was my employer doesn't beat me up on taking time off when needed(unlike some previous employers I have had)
In Australia I consider hourly rate and training as I’m a master tech x 2 Nissan and Holden not many duel masters around with 30 plus years I’m a Forman now as I enjoy it but would take a step back to be closer to home for right benefits 🇦🇺
Good info and should be heeded by the savvy employee weighing his/her employment options. Always look at the entire pkg. Pay, vacation time, quality of life and be sure to get it in writing. I had a shop owner tell me 1 week vacation the first year than a few months into the job he said after you complete the first year you would be eligible for the 1 week. People lie it's unfortunate, but limit what can be ambiguous by getting it in writing especially when dealing with a mom and pop shop/business.
In my experience most shops unless there are dealership Does not offer Health care or 401 benefits, The only thing I Receive from the dealership was a Bay and a left I supplied 90% of my Tools , done 90% of the work And receive 25% of the pay So I chose to go in business for myself
Lots of independent shops hiring around 35-45 hourly in the central Pennsylvania area. This would have been unheard of several years ago, dealers are also into the low 30s. I know a couple guys who recently got back into the industry, I myself just accepted an offer for 45 an hour with a guarantee if car count is low. Things are lookin up.
Flat rate works if your... great- fast, very competent, multijob & finish jobs every day. It is not for most. The shop being busy is extremely important. The quality of your work needs to speak volumes!!!
I used to commute as far or further than you do for 6 years. Also had to do every 2nd saturday for a few hours at 1.5 x pay rate. In the end it sucked so much, ive got 2 young kids and losing 2 hours a day just to work was too much. Managed to get a job 2min drive from home, no weekends and same pay. Its so much better not wasting time sitting in a car. You cant put a price on time, you never get it back
I’m an hourly tech no flat rate. Boss won’t even consider it. But work in the shop makes the shop a lot of money weekly. Boss won’t even talk about pay increases based on good numbers. Curious your thoughts. (12 years here). Now that I’m older it’s getting harder to justify staying. 🤔
The employment scene has changed so much, long term employees are fewer every year,it’s more a trend of $$$ and funny it comes from the front office with there spread sheets , guess what I started running my own , daily hours vs projected total hours and pay vs projected vs expectation . Guess what if my employer is not project to meet my pay expection as shown on my spread sheet it’s time to move, just like a business it’s all about the bottom line
The shop I am at is only paying 9.50 hours for a timing chain on an 3.5 explorer because that is what the labor guide calls for but all data calls for more
@@rockymountainhigh9379 Most young people say this...I say this...but the reality is that you don't have insurance to use it...who wants to be sick or in the hospital??? Insurance is there in case of a need or emergency.....
