I LOVE this series, and will watch every one of them! What I appreciate most is that your observations are humble, well-grounded and accurate...versus a lot of photography critics that go way over the top with their cork-sniffing, snobby, and high-brow nonsense. All 7 of these images are exceptional. Thank you for sharing the inspiration.

Hi Tomasz, I think what really makes this series of talks is the fact that you have access to a great many photographers and photographs as well as a mature sense of what makes a great photo great, and you know how to describe the anatomy of the images in ways that resonate. Numerous elements need to come together to make a good photograph and the selections here do that. In this group of 7, I think one important contributing factor common to all of them is their apparent simplicity of concept and composition. They are uncluttered and contemplative. They take our eyes to where they belong. In these respects, the photographers have succeeded admirably. I do hope you will continue providing this series. Despite all the stuff we are bombarded with to consume our time on a daily basis, this kind of presentation stands out as worthwhile pausing a few minutes to just watch and learn.

What I love about these images is that they break all the "rules" that newbie photographers are told to follow like rules of thirds, never put the subject in the centre, avoid splitting photos in the middle with horizons, etc. I hate these rules and simply take and compose the images as I see fit. If it works for me, I'm happy. Great to see these wonderful images breaking these rules too!

Regarding the third image, the three trees on the island. It seems that they are off center to the left so that the tree line across the pond is brought in and balance is achieved by the greenish/yellow (possibly a willow tree) on that shore line.

@@framesmagazine Spot on. This was my second stop of the morning, having photographed a different foggy area prior. The small pond currently has a pair of mute swans, the hen spending most of her time in the nest while the cob swims around. I did spend quite a bit of time there, trying to find a pleasing composition while watching the birds. The offset on the island was intentional, as was the 16:9 composition.

I’ll like the idea, the photos and your comments are interesting. I have a couple comments/suggestions. 1. I found it distracting to have your talking head showing while the picture is being shown. 2. The background should not conflict with the photo; for instance a white background makes it hard to look at a dark photo.
@framesmagazine

Thank you, John. I will think about it next time I create a similar video.
@davemacey1279
@davemacey1279 Год назад
Sorry, but this was not for me. It is a collection of photographs of where the value of being picturesque is greater than what the subject matter is and unfortunately the images just look like a collection of tired cliches.
@framesmagazine
@framesmagazine Год назад
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Dave. Needless to say, we can’t discuss our individual tastes. For me, there is no aesthetics and compelling visual stories without the actual subject matter. It all works in tandem and I think these photographers executed on this premise in an outstanding way. If this was the “cliche”… well, I am more than happy to see more of such photographs.
@davemacey1279
@davemacey1279 Год назад
@@framesmagazine Thanks for the reply. I agree that there can be no visual story or aesthetics without subject matter, (that’s pretty obvious) but my point is that the photographs are using an aesthetic of being picturesque too heavily and that undermines the visual story. In essence, a photograph can offer more than being just a pretty picture 😊
@framesmagazine
@framesmagazine Год назад
@@davemacey1279 Of course. But there are photographs (also great photographs) falling into different categories. Some of them appeal to us with their plain visual characteristics and there are some that move us more with the underlying stories. I will definitely be featuring different kind of imagery with this particular series going forward.
@koolblue2
@koolblue2 Год назад
Can’t agree more! Tomasz it is not about taste with these photos it is about the blatant lack of good composition. While you talk about the elements of design you seem to be unable to stitch together a complete sentence telling us how they work together to create a story or an image worth spending time to look at.
