Very interesting video Anna but you can’t talk about fast fashion as a big polluter on one hand, and push people to buy fake leather on the other. Fake leather is made of PU which is basically plastic=petroleum derivative. The biggest polluting industry is anything related to petroleum. Fake leather is not only BAD for the environment to produce, it does NOT LAST the way real leather does (it will crinkle and break while real leather can last decades with care) and on top of that, it cannot be recycled.

i loved it when you said "Save yourself some money, and save some animals" I agree.
@Gomba13
@Gomba13 3 года назад
Actually, it's really not that simple. The most common animal skin used for leather is pig skin and beef skin. These are animals that we eat. If you don't buy their leather, you are saving no animal, as those animals still get killed for food. Only, their skin ends up in the garbage instead of being reused. Leather is valuable, it is the most durable material there is for clothing and furniture. Some leather items save a lot of consumption and pollution, because if you bought items made of a different material, you would have to replace them every year whereas leather lasts at least a decade. I have a leather bag that I know will survive me. That's a lot of plastic not polluting the oceans. Also, vegan leather is actually plastic most of the time. Plastic is made from petrol. I can assure you that no animal on this planet is happy about us destroying their natural habitat by drilling for oil and by throwing the plastic in the ocean after we are done using it. Plastic doesn't save animals, it hurts them.

@@Gomba13 actually nowadays vegan leather is made with pineapple skin and hemp elements, a win for animals and the planet ,and around 90% animal leather is made in india from old dairy cows ,not good enough for meat so yeah,stopping eating meat is actually great for the planet less methane and the process of making animal leather is using child labor and unhealthy conditions, like why people use mica free makeup the same reasons
@Gomba13
@Gomba13 3 года назад
@@diociharesibelli2547 First of all, the concept of vegan leather is not even a decade old, so there is no "nowadays" as the first times it was called vegan leather was also nowadays. Second, what is called vegan leather is made from a huge variety of materials, not only the two you mention. But the interesting part is that, while animal leather almost always comes with a mention of which animal the leather was harvested from, vegan leather strangely never mentions the material it was made from, so you actually don't know what you are buying. This is how pleather is passed off as vegan leather. Test it: ask the salesperson what the vegan leather was made from, and they will hate you forever. Also, this "around 90% of leather comes from India" is bollocks. What do you think happens to the skins of hundreds of thousands of heads of cattle slaughtered in North America each year? Why would they ever dump it and then buy hide from India to make leather goods? The process of making vegan leather is in no way more environmentally friendly than animal leather. You think water doesn't get diverted for the crops the vegan leather is made from? You think those crops don't get bombed with chemicals, bombing the wildlife in the process? You think when those chemicals leach into waterbodies, they don't cause disease and death in wildlife? And where did you get the idea that little slave kids only work with cattle but not with produce? Most little slave kids work on crops, all your cherished vegan crops. If you eat bananas, you are indirectly forcing kids to work. If you drink tea or coffee, ditto. Watermelon? Soy? The cotton in your cotton pants? Oh, and by the way, some vegan leather is made from minerals, non-renewable resources, and guess who descends into the mines to mine that? Little slave kids. Next time, before trying to educate people about your virtuous vegan lifestyle, go do a little research about it. It is in no way more virtuous than an omnivore lifestyle. Only, the suffering, exploitation and damage to the environment are much less visible because you can't film fish and waterfowl dying a horrible death as a direct result of your consumption. You can always brainwash yourself into believing you are helping the planet, but that won't do nothing to save the animals dying on your account. Being vegan won't save the planet or the animals. It is only a way to stick your head in the sand. Getting educated and consuming responsibly, which starts with not consuming unless necessary (try no makeup instead of mica makeup), on the other hand, will help. That starts with researching your stuff instead of falling for the marketing. Not confusing vegan with environmentally friendly could be a start.

Ladies, knowing how to take care of your clothes is a game changer. When I was in high school, I started doing my laundry by myself because my mom used to wash everything at high temperature. At that time, my budget only allowed me to purchase Zara every now and then. But I took good care of them and they lasted for more than 6 years. Always read the labels, wash at most at 30C. Use proper detergents. And I highly recommend air drying. Buy a small drying rack. Don’t use clips, just lay the clothes. Always hand wash your delicate garments while you take a shower. Make sure you have multiples of everything. At least 2 pairs of shoes, 2 dark colored tops, 2 light colored tops, 2 outerwear, etc. That way, you don’t end up using one item too much, and you don’t have to wash them too frequently. Show love to your clothes and they love you back :)

My Grandad taught me to always buy the best you can afford, and regardless of how much it cost treat it as expensive. Items last better for longer that way. I have a pair of Asda boots £20 that are over 15 years old and still going strong. They get reheeled and protective soles each year and they are still looking good. I now have higher quality footwear and they also get the same treatment; I also have a pair of RM Williams boots that are nearly 30 years old and have got better through the years.

A major reason why fast fashion garments often lose their shape after a few washes is that the companies don‘t cut according to the fabric‘s grain line in order to use as much of the fabric as possible to save money. So look out for the direction of the grain of the fabric and whether the garment’s cut follows the natural/intended drape of the fabric.

One way to keep your clothes longer is to stop washing them so often - get a hand held steamer to freshen them up in between necessary washings! I always turn my clothes inside out and only use my "delicate" and "hand-wash only" cycles (except for my riding pants and jeans, etc.) and try to air dry most, with maybe a short tumble on light dry to help relax wrinkles. I realized that my older washing machine (top loading/agitator) was just tearing them up! When you can, replace that type washer with a tumble washer, or even better a vibrating/shaking washer. Save your tops and soft clothes by always putting them in a lingerie bag no matter what you are washing them with.

The key takeaway seems to be: Pay Attention To Fabric! Wool, cotton, modal, cashmere... keep it as pure as possible. Sure, buy your basic tees and tanks at fast fashion stores and you don't have to be as mindful of the fabric - but for everything else, it's worth it to take some time and purchase items of good quality. You may have to go thrift/consignment store shopping to do this if you are on a budget, and that's totally fine! I started doing it and I have found some beautiful things that I would have never been able to afford new (and no one can tell that they are second hand!)!

It depends were it's made, really... I have a coat from zara, that I bougth in 1998, it costed me at the time 20 000 escudos (100 eudos), made in portugal and its good as new... you have to look were its made, the quality of the fabric and the cut. I have bought very expensive polos in burberrys and lacoste (for me 200 euros for a shirt its were I draw the limit)... two washes and they were garbage, even tought they were supposed to last, nevertheless made in india, so... last year I bougth 2 polo shirts from marque mosqueton, made in france, 40 euros each and they look as good as new... so when you start talking about brands and the cost, nowadays that means nothing, the old good brands have losted all the quality and most of the time you pay garbage if you rely only the brand...

I have never heard about fast fashion until RU-vid. I have clothes from what you consider cheap stores that have lasted me 5-10 years. I have always looked at the fabric and the cut of the garment before purchasing and most of the time got it right. I have never worn an item of clothing for a season and then thrown it away, again, learnt this on RU-vid. I have purchased very expensive clothes believing they would last me for years only to wash them a few time and they simply look terrible. When I buy something, it will be with me for years, carefully washed, steamed or ironed and put away. I look forward to your video on the clothes you have purchased from cheaper outlets which have lasted and why that is. x

Perhaps pricey, but for the quality. In psychology, it's Buyer's Remorse, wherein you have high expectations for something you find expensive and thus you cannot be satisfied. The opposite can be true, too; buy something less expensive and your expectations will be much lower, so that thing has a chance to impress and surprise you, making you value it more. When buying true quality that you agree meets your expectations, then the price wouldn't make you feel disappointed.

theyre a bit higher quality, but still very average. Mango is not an ethical brands (so the extra doesnt go to the workers) and most of their materials are cheap synthetics. The same for Zara. If you want better quality for simmilar fast fashion prices, go for HM Premium and look for high quality materials. You can get e.g. a classic 100% silk shirt for about £70.

Check out the Higg Sustainability Index (essentially the industry standard for measuring the environmental impact of fabrics). Cow leather is listed as the second least sustainable material measured, only behind alpaca wool, and worse than even plastic. Of course plastic is awful too, and other plant based leather alternatives are preferable. I have a wallet made from "leaf leather" for example that has lasted about six years so far and still looks great. Hopefully more companies will indroduce more of those options as time goes on. Tannery effluent used on animal skin leather can contain many pollutants too.
