One more idea to You. Some pedals without proper bearings consume more power than you can save due to their light weight. There where some tests in the internet. Shimano pedals are really effective in terms of rolling resistance.
I have the Look pedals for 3 months. The cleats are very hard to unclip, changed to Shimano cleats and they are much better. The biggest issue is hitting my ankles on the cranks and even chain stay 3mm does not sound much but I have the bruises to prove it does on some bikes. So I have decided to go back to Shimano.
I've used these pedals for 2 seasons, and several crashes, and they work great. The only downside is that the bearings don't rotate as smoothly as they used to, but after abusing them for 3k miles - that shouldn't be a surprise.
The O on the Look Pedal is on the collar above the threads, the left has a cut/ridge all the way around the collar, the right collar above the threads is smooth, that’s the difference on my Look Carbon TI pedals.
I use this pedals for a while, i like them more compare to Shimano XT, because the plataform is way bigger, make the sensation of power transfer better and smooth..........they are very good pedals.
i ve changed all shimano spds (540 and 980) on both my bikes for race and race carbon. look just work better for some reason (easier engagement and less accidental disengagements), with shimano and look cleats. and yes, axle length does matter - i had to use shims with my lake winter boots

Shimano has the best Clipless MTB Pedals in my Opinion. I find the PDM 540s are hard to beat. I am currently on Xpedo MForce 8 Pedals with Steel Axles, they are not bad, but the longevity of the bearings is nothing to brag about and the action is also not comparable to Shimano. I also have a pair of old XTR 747, they are undestroyable...
Nice to have someone review Look. As an ex roadie I used Look back in the 90s and loved em. I always used shimano on the MTB but have X-Track En rage now for the enduro bike and I really like the float they have and he bulkier platform. I still use shimano spd on the XC bike but now I've seen this review I may take a look at those. Thanks
I had the first generation Look pedals in the late 80's. Great pedals, but the moment Time pedals appeared, everyone went to them, because they had some rotational float, but the Looks didn't.
@@kisilvan yup I long thought that riding then for 4-5 years may have had some long term negative impact on the knee, but it ultimately went away…. I just didn’t have enough money then for the Time pedals….
I recently replaced a pair of Shimano pedals with the X-Track En-Rage. I'm still using my old cleats. I share your experience in that the Look pedals stay clipped better than the Shimano. I think it's because the Look pedals have more float but I haven't tried to confirm that.

Nice review! Being a longtime Shimano user, I wasn't even aware that Look had pedals like this. Honestly however a carbon body MTB pedal sounds like a bad idea - all it might take is one or two good hard rock strikes on the trail and these might end up shattered into pieces, given the rather brittle nature of carbon composites.
First off, Time has a pedal that has been carbon for much longer than Look, and they are actually known as some of the most reliable pedals out there. Second, I have a set of these pedals, 3 of them actually. One set I have raced very hard in the elite category in Cyclocross and mountain biking all over the Northwestern part of America. In all weather conditions, in many temperatures, and in all ground types. Never had an issue with the Looks. However, I used to race Shimano XTR 9100s. I switched to Look after a particularly icy race that my XTRs froze up on me in and the looks that I was experimenting with took over and performed much better for much longer in frozen temps. Ive struck these pedals against rocks, curbs, playstructures, roots, dirt, gravel, everything you can imagine. They just are bombproof. I cant say the same for my XTRs which folded on me on one side once when I took a 9 foot drop in Washington. A pin broke.
I switched to HT pedals last year because I wanted more retention. They are a game changer. They hold so tight but easy to snap out of. At 300g for the pair I can't complain about the weight either.
I've bought some crankbrother mallet e LS + their own shoe that's meant to go with the pedals and tested for a whole season.. It just can't beat the beat up (bought used) xtr m9100 with a random set of cheap spd shoes. That satisfying click and knowing you're either clipped or unclipped is unbeatable. In contrast eggbeaters seem vague and not reassuring in their clip mechanism, I've even had them unclip in the middle of a downhill, and even though it's adjustable - they're already setup as good as you can get out of the gate, as it's meant to go together. Meanwhile I've never had that happen with shimano even at low-medium setting, not to mention you can adjust that on the fly! I've upgraded the shoes to specialized rekon for stiffer carbon sole, but the pedals and spd system is so godlike I can't believe it's unchanged for like 3 decades, spd came out before I was even born! They really did nail it out of the gate with this one. The only advantage crank system has over the spd sh51 (that I've used) is in the crashes it ejects you away from the bike better, but most likely sh56 would do that also.
@@LoveMTB I'll be honest, I've been using them for trail riding. And even though it says "e" for enduro, they are perfectly fine for trail riding. No more weight than any other trail spd pedal either, I was surprised - after seeing their beefy construction. I'm sure they'd survive nuclear war. theyre still good pedals - Wide platform for even and big area for shoe contact, the platform feels very good - no pressure spots unlike what I had with spd (but that is probably from flexible shoe base). And the unclipping is super easy for when the terrain is iffy, that's on the default cleats. I've bought some ez cleats from crankbros too, but never even needed to test them, as default was already super easy. The Q factor is great for trail riding too, as they offer long spindle version. What I didn't like was that instead of pressing in shoe vertically, you kinda have to 'slide into' the mechanism, more horizontally - very much a dislike for me. And also its vague, as there's no audible click it lacks the reassurance of spd for me, even though I know I'm clicked, it just isn't the same. I guess it kinda stems from the fact that I find them too easy to unclip, and unlike spd where a hex tool can adjust on the fly - you need to mess around with cleat spacers, but I think I'm already without spacers on the mallet shoes and its still too easy. On shimano I kept using lowest spring force and it was never a problem. Not sure about marketing though, im from Lithuania and I've never seen any ads for them here, I just know Jeff from WWC, and all the guys at VitalMTB use them, so I tried my hand at it.
Thanks for the overview! Switching fully to SPD and use Look Blades on one Roadie, and Shimano XTR's on another... prefer the faster click-in with traffic and walkability of Gravel cleats. Interested in the XTrack series for the larger platform / energy transfer. Would love to see a comparison video with the Look En-Rage series.
Hey there I have an off topic here question. As you know I'm building a Prone (L) frame. I just watched your video on chain line sizing, and now confused. I ordered a m7120 crank set, and I have a bottom bracket width of 73mm. Question will the crankset work, and do I still need a 2.5 washer when I install the bottom bracket as crank set came with 2 3mm washers?? Will my chain line be so far off with the M7120?? The carbon “Looks” cool, but…..I want to see what shape they are in after 10-15yrs. The XT pedal is just bulletproof. They will outlast every maintain bike you will ever own. I’m skeptical that the Look will have the same long-term durability. Good info, nice video!
Same thoughts, i have seen a lot of look pedals that have the same bearing problems even their hi End Keo 2 max... Shimano pedals are bomb Proof! i used to own an older low end version of Shimano been using it for more than 4 years without any maintenance for its price its hard to beat!
I use spd for my road bike because of the walkability and also clip sandals only come in spd... Nowadays there are road bike shoes w spd, like the giro empires
Review those Trail Grip flats. Its weird that they're using Vibram vs having the typical shin-dig-pins. It would be nice to have fewer scars even if I'm proud of them.

Hi! Not sure why are you tired from shimano spd... But,... After 3 (or 4) seasons same XT pedals are fine in heavy CC (boots are surely not, will go to trash) and still have some original grease in it. And XTs surely forgive me a ton of scratches by rocks, roots and road ) They not so good for jumps, it is true... Well, I moved to trail/enduro fs last year, learning to fly, you know. Nice - thanks for the intro to LOOK pedals. I've drifted so far from road biking I forgot all about LOOK as a brand. Will try some for my next set. I wanted to ask a question about brakes. I bought a set of brakes (MEROCA 2 piston mineral oil) for a spare bike I was putting together. Simple cheap and cheerful brakes. The bike turned out to be so good, I've used it a lot and in less than 4 months worn out the pads. I never paused to think when buying the brakes that finding replacement pads would be an issue. I cannot find any information online to tell me where I can obtain MEROCA pads, or which Shimano pads to use. Replacing the rear pads while on an away trip at a bike shop, they simply popped in new pads and away I went happy as Larry, but I failed to learn which pads they used. Silly me. Would you know? Or, perhaps it could be a useful video subject for a later time. As the MEROCA brakes are otherwise fantastic, I'm sure there are many more people wondering where they can get new pads. Please let me know if you're reading this and have the answer. Thank you :-)
The conclusion that you got is the most imp. to me because with shimano xt pedals and sh51 i got to mutch float ,and 1 part of the pedal even alows free play on vertical axis which is so bad and anoying on everythink.Do you had the same think?
@@LoveMTB yes, they are shimano ,both cleats and pedals.. But somehow maybe the vertical movement has connection with the angle of my ankle and foot,couse i go a little like a duck.Othervise ,as i observed the connection between cleats and SPD ,could just be manufacturing mistakes. I do not have any idea what else could be.
