In this video, we take a good close look at two rare and historic daguerreotype portraits, probably made in the 1840s. For context, we will also briefly discuss the timeline of other historic processes with examples of each.

Loved this presentation. Until recently, I always wondered why anyone would want to collect old portraits of dead people they’d never meet … then I found daguerreotypes and that all changed. Trying to assemble a small collection of my own and am enjoying it immensely. Would be interested to know if you’ve opened these up to see what hallmarks are on the plates as that can also help with dating. I’ve read that preservers weren’t introduced until 1847, so these are at least later than that if they are original to the images. Thanks for sharing!

I didn’t know about hallmarks. I probably won’t take these apart right now but I can tell you they are a trick to photograph! I started collecting these old photos as a way to learn about the processes but also to learn the stories of the photographers, which of course is easier on the cabinet cards which are labeled.

Be careful -- it's addictive! I was haunting antique shops for several years before I found my first daguerreotype and even longer to find an Ambrotype.
