All of them were. Lots of features that were previously just textures were turned into a 3d feature, like mouths, some eyes, and some other things, while a lot of pokemon also got changes like visible fur, scales or even a metallic sheen

_Some_ of the models in SwSh were new. Just not all of them. People complained that SwSh reused models, but then they complained SV had boring environments. Both are created by the same team, so it's a trade off on available manhours.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio None of the old Pokemon got new models in Swsh. The development of that game was an absolute mess. Sword and Shield are the biggest "what could have been" in the franchise.
Really makes you wonder how different things could've been in TPC didn't try to make as much money as possible for SwSh. It already hurts that people hate SwSh despite it being a pretty solid game only dragged down by a rushed deadline.
As someone who likes Digimon more, Pokémon having every one of their little creatures available was always something that I held above my favorite series. Sure I couldn’t always catch some of them, but I could still transfer or trade them in to use to my heart’s content. They took that away. They took away the only thing that genuinely made Pokémon better than Digimon in my eyes. Now it is just Digimon where we get the nostalgia, the newbies and like three faves of one of the head developers.
@@miikaroos3809 I guess this is a case where you can't please anybody then. People still managed to complain about legendary pokemon missing from the snack worth and asking of them to buy another game just to get them. If anything, making every single legendary pokemon available in one game with every other poke available makes their practices less predatory.
@@MystmonYeah I far prefer it to having to dig it out of an older game. (Also technically they randomly leave out a few legendaries every time they do this)

Honestly I’m fine with Dexit in theory (after all since Gen 5 you’ve needed to transfer at least some mons to the next generation from the previous one otherwise they are completely uncatchable within that Gen). My issue is more with distribution - some Pokemon get to be in every game (not just stuff like Pikachu, SKUNTANK has been in every regional dex on the Switch besides LGPE) while others are either not in any Switch game or if they are “lucky” get to be relegated to the BDSP postgame (Swellow my beloved 😢)
well, with the Gen 6 games, all the non mythical Pokémon could be caught legitimately in the games. between XY and ORAS, all Pokémon available (and even Deoxys, a mythical Pokémon) could be caught meaning you never actually needed to have a copy of the previous gens to complete the dex. Some are BS to get like the friend safari mon sin XY. but you could catch all Pokémon available at the time with just those four games, they easily could have excluded mons but it really felt like they were trying for a fresh beginning with those 4, and even with gen 7, USUM were all you needed to complete the new mons with S&M being basically irrelevant
I have a strange feeling that the "upgrading the models" part by the developers were talking about the next game after SwSh and not SwSh. I smell mistranslation or miscommunication. I mean, if so, that lines up with the development of PLA and SV at that time (which was in 2018), which explains why many pokemon got new slick models and actual tangent normal maps and PBR maps (to give actual details via texture channels instead of baked textures and game engine's lighting, which also explains why Magnemite and any metallic pokemon looks too metallic).
As sad as many of the mons didn't appear in one game, at least they continue to improve some of the complaints from fans such as Blastoise's hydro pump and new models, which about 70% of the mons starting PLA up to SV DLC have new and improved models and animations instead of 3DS models that SwSh and BDSP uses. All that's left is one game to bring everyone home, along with cut movesets and every pokemon gets a new model.
Yes, it was probably a miscommunication/mistranslation. They also are likely developing a lot of stuff in the same time frame, since they have a crunch to make Pokemon games every 3 years, so...
@@Miguel92398 Personally I think the new models are less important than new animations. Making new models is time consuming, and with SV it's obvious the improvement in the Pokemon's appearances meant less time spent on the environments, especially towns.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio that would be the case. Now if only Game Freak has more staff members handling the 3D environment and such, while also has more staff members handling the 3D models of characters and pokemon + design. I feel that it's not enough at all, hence the 3-4 years development.
@@Miguel92398 that's not the actual issue. (I know that's what it looks like.) Review of gamefreak (as an employer) Frequently mentioned that programmers wished they had more time. And that the artist team is having a blast. Which checks out if you consider the level of detail on characters and mons. But how badly the games run. The envorimental designers cannot do their job (texture work. Landscape design. General things you would see) if the system designers (who program stuff like collison, LOD scaling, and bug fixing underlying engine issues, and expanding engine capability) Don't have time. To fix, expand or revise, or create tool sets for the other designers.
Its literally beyond insane to me that when dexit happened, GF didn't make it a priority to ensure that every starter was availible in the 'national dex.' The starters are objectively the most famous pokemon from their respective regions, and having them at least transferrable would ensure that there was at least something for fans of every generation, but instead they would rather leave them unobtainable in the game files so that they can be added later in an attempt to convince people to pay more than the 60$ they already spent for the base game to buy DLC
I don't think you need to buy the DLC, in order to transfer in Pokemon that became available with said DLC. The DLC just gives you access to that story, and the ability to catch those pokemon in game. But without the DLC you can still transfer them in. If they actually blocked the Pokemon completely behind the paywall, the backlash would be insane. And it would also pretty much make any and all tournaments essentially p2w.
I do hope that in 10, it'll focus more on the other stuff Pokemon can do, or other battle times. The standard battle format has gotten stale in my eyes.
I think its the sheer power creep that gets me. Like gens 8 and 9 have had the most powercreep ever. Just. Period. It makes the first wave of megas look like UU pokemon or worse.

Considering there is now over 1000 Pokémon, it makes sense that the developers would want to cut back and focus resources on the new ones and whatever they feel should make a return.
Honestly, I don’t care about having all the old Pokemon back or even any of them, because how amazing would it be to have a gen full of all new Pokemon?? Not like “four new guys and also here’s Pikachu and charizard in case you want to build the same team you default to every game.”
If Gamefreak were a more sane developer Dexit would have happened sooner. Dragon Quest XI S has about 700 Monsters but most of them have at least one recolor, including the Act 2 Final Boss and the Final Boss itself. The series Mascot has essentially five recolors. Dragon Quest VIII had better enemy variety. SMT V Cut the number of Demons from 426 With DLC total to nearly half at 230 with DLC when going from 2D to HD. Both games have similar animation systems for animating monsters/demons as Pokemon too and Pokemon doesn't have the shortcuts that both SMT and DQ can do.
Yeah, really. Especially when it got revealed that the late 3DS models were unironically just compressed Switch models. And don't forget qUaLiTy AnImAtIoNs.

i just feel like they did it at the wrong time? sun and moon was the first to not have dex entries for the ones you can only transfer in, and to give shiny charm for regional instead of natdex completion. if they weren't going to do dexit then, i think they should have waited for one more game after sword and shield just so you could have any pokemon in a switch game right off the bat.
@@blissfulstatic2563 If rumors that Sword and Shield were originally gonna be more open like Scarlet/Violet are true, it may have been something they never wanted to, but just had to
@@blissfulstatic2563 Switching to a new console seems like a more logical choice from a design standpoint. They had to make a lot of major changes to the game engine to accommodate for new hardware, then they switched from fixed-camera top-down to free cam in wild areas. There was a LOT of extra work that had to go into making the Switch games, and I don't think most people really understand or appreciate how hard and time consuming video game development is. For Sun and Moon, and ESPECIALLY Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they were able to simply copy large amounts of code, 3D models, and data from existing projects. That wasn't the case for Switch, which operates differently than the 3DS at the machine level.
@@luckybunny8322 They didn't have to. The *really* didn't have to. They wanted to rush out the games and so; incomplete 60 dollar games is what we're getting... 90 dollars if you wanna add a handful of Pokémon that come with the DLC.
when it comes to national dexes, i think it makes sense from an ecological perspective? like the first four regions were all connected, but unova was a separate continent, so it makes sense imo for them to not be complete, at least during game. but i want the full dex after post game because i want my shint stoutland on switch. she deserves to see battle.
Yeah, the dex cut didn't really do that much in my eyes. Regions already didn't have Pokemon from previous gens sometimes in them, which makes sense considering many of these places are not anywhere these Pokemon would be, but it's nice that they allowed transfers for a lot of Pokemon that can't normally be found lately.
Gamefreak must be so proud to have such complacent fans such as yourself. They get to cut content from the games and people like you will come out of the woodwork and make up excuses for their crappy practices.
Love how it couldn’t be any more perfect that the dex cut happened in the region based on Britain around the time Britain separated from the U.K, to get that beautifully catchy pun, “dexxit.”
I love how the pokemon remodels on gen8 are just "hey, we took out the fun form pokemon so now they just look like mega plastic" Then gen 9 said "they have textures... jsut like vortua racing!"
I never ever heard them officially saying it was for balance, what i heard was to focus of better model AND animations, while all the got in SwSh was a blender subdivide click, shading change, and same/worst a animations (in XY, when your pokemon was looking back at you they were turning their head to you, but in SwSh it is their entire body moving a few degrees like a stone statue instead) So basically nothing worth removing accessible pokemons. SV changes are imo enough to justify not all pokemons here, there is quite a bunch if work with new and returning pokemon, more than just texture, there are new models for some pokemons, some has different idle pose in and out of combat) I hope we won't be forever cut away from some pokemons tho... Like, now that improvement have been made on a bunch, can copy paste that to gen 10 and have time to work on the ones that weren't in SV. (Also wish the studio had more time to work and rest... i don't mind waiting more years for more stuff while at the same time not crunching devs, it is possible, just need to give them proper time)
I feel like if Gamefreak had enough time, they'd probably find ways to add all pokemom to their games, but it seems they are stuck on a sort of routine where they have to release a game every or so year. That seems to be changing, tho with Legends ZA, maybe they'll have a new way to make these games. At this point, I dont mind the dex cuts. Lots of games I love have already done this, like Digimon and SMT. All I want is for the devs to be paid well by their bosses and to just live lives that are mundanely happy. Same for all of us. I dont wanna live in interesting or mental times anymore.
THIS! THIS SO MUCH! They don't have nearly enough time to make the game at the Pokemon Company, so of course they're gonna end up poorly. I honestly kind of feel like if they had the dev time of Pokemon SwSh, Pokemon PLA, and Pokemon SV all combined for one game, it'd be something that'd shake people to the core! Though..then again..people would probably try to make that the standard...so maybe it's for the better that they don't..
I feel like we don't necessarily need every Pokémon in every game, but rather a game that lets us have all Pokémon in it, whether it be a battle simulator or an MMO or some other experience that can be continually updated and preferably offer an additional experience that the main series games cannot.
Dexit was honestly really good for competitive play because it produced a bunch of formats with much more limited rosters and that was good and healthy!
I will always say, I think a limited dex is actually a good thing for the game imo, but the fact that they kinda lied about WHY they were doing it in SWSH that ruined the good will of the fans
@@MultiAdrian11 It's all a matter of dev-time, and competence. They'd have to make way more environments, behaviors and finally, since XD or BR, true custom animations.. They can barely make enough (barebones) areas and the like as is with the currently limited dex for the featured pokemon to make sense. That, and there being a lesser, different variety of non-new pokemon to be showcased which changes the meta. SMT/PERSONA/Digimon do it very well, and they're way more complicated animation and mechanic wise. Outside of series staples, the catalog is pretty always different (or redesigned).
@@ValanwayThat's not true at all for SMT and Persona. They basically reuse the same demons/Persona every single games with the very limited pool of character specific demons/persona. They also tend to have a shorter roaster than pokemon per game. Pokemon's average is 400 to 600+ with DLCs. Persona and SMT tend to stuck to 200~250 (in 3D, SMT IV went to 450 and I think the highest number of demons available in a Megaten game to date). P.S: Honesty would not even call SMT/Persona mechanically complexe, they actually pretty simple especially when compared to Pokemon in terms of complexity and depth (Pokemon is unnecessarily so, but Persona/SMT are bit too simple that they added the affinity mechanic so that demons can become more varied in how they play because 4 and 3 had the problem of every singles demon basically using the same 3 skills throughout the game. Persona didn't really adress that tho, p5r is the easiest game in the series even on the highest difficulty setting with the advantages it gives to the player).
To me, the Dex cut just makes sense. It seems unrealistic to expect every single Pokémon to appear in every single game till the end of time, especially with over 1000 Pokémon (not counting regional variants or alternative forms) in the series as of Gen 9. Does it suck? Yes. Does it make sense? Yes.
With Legends: Z-A, Alolan Rattata is the only Pokemon that STILL might not end up being transferrable into a Switch game, as every other 3DS-only Pokemon is encounterable in XY
@@EntropicembraceI firmly believe that Satoru Iwata was the only person with code optimization sense there in GameFreak. Because he's the only reason Gold and Silver got published by fixing GF's downright horrific coding, and the moment he leaves for BOTW, GameFreak almost immediately starts having the same coding optimization problems. I mean come on, just look at S/M leak with the Lillie cutscene - 30 damn frames of the exact copies of every model involved, instead if just simply repositioning the models to minimize bloat.
Dexit never really bothered me, it was gonna happen no matter what and its not like those pokemon are going anywhere, and even when all the pokemon are available, some still fall through the cracks like the venonat line wasn’t able to be found during the main story of a pokemon game from gold and silver until scarlet and violet (not counting re makes)
I'd be more accepting if they eventually patched in all the rest of the mons. But they never follow through with it. It wouldn't have to be full expansions, they could've just added the rest in simple updates as either just transfers or random spawns in the overworld or raids. Super frustrating.
I still think the monster collecting game with the slogan "Gotta catch 'em all" should have 'em all. It's crazy to think there were more pokemon in the games 20 years ago than there are in the base game today. Kinda wish the dlcs brought back all the pokemon at the very least, catching hundreds of pokemon was the post game. But there are so few and they're all so easy to find that it takes like 2 days to find them all
At least with less pokemon in the dex that will give you a chance to strategize your final team from the start. Also having more ways to change your team in every region
I won’t lie to you, the models in scarlet and violet are so good that I don’t even mind the amount of Pokémon still missing, I mean, we got some amazing textures, new move animations and every starter in the game, that’s enough for me, and I might be setting my expectations too high but I hope legends ZA does that, but even better. Sure gamefreak made some questionable choices but I have faith in them
I feel like the only one in existence who loves the monkeys and REALLY wishes she could have Simipour. I've never had her before, and I love her so much...💙😢😭
The Dex cut was something that was probably bound to happen at some point, just on the sheer number of Pokemon there are now. Considering the state of Modern Game Freak, I’m morbidly curious how much they’d bloat the games file size if the cut hadn’t happened.
Another reason that they gave, but very few people talked about that I had noticed in the initial announcement was theming. Which I would understand it makes sense why certain pokemon wouldn't live in that region. However, they forgot to put in pokemon like Swanna, and Stoutland was not in the base game. They did remember ones like the japanese tengu and Mexican sombrero duck. This is why I tell people that dexit was not about cutting pokemon, we all knew it would happen eventually. It was about how they made up excuses that did not stand up to their claims is why people were mad.
Hot take, I don't care about the dex cuts any more. I see how little time these games get to cook and think, "maybe they would launch even more broken if they had to implement another 200 pokemon" But I completely understand people who still care
I genuinely think removing the National Dex was a good thing for a few reasons, 1 it’s infinitely easier to get the Shiny Charm, 2 non of my favourite Pokémon were cut from gens 8 or 9 when DLC is included
I'm willing to believe that they really did cut the decks for the sake of working on animations, Just different from the animations that actually appeared in games like sword and shield. It took a minute but we got Legends Arceus and that's as immersive as ever, and from the looks of it we're only getting more games like that
With how many Pokémon there are now and how new ones keep getting added with every new game and DLC, a new game where you get to catch all 1000+ Pokémon and get rewarded with a measly Shiny Charm sounds increasingly less worthwhile. At least Pokémon HOME gave you an exclusive Magearna that can actually be used.
If only gen 9 didn't have so many glitches. The models look fantastic, the game is fast-paced compared to previous games, the moves look excellent, and the story is also pretty good imo
Furfrou also isn't on the switch and I really missed them so I get so excited when Legends Z-A got announced because my boi Furfrou is finally back! I told my friend I was excited for Furfrou finally returning and they said "a whole freaking game and you're excited for Furfrou?!" And I said "Yeah!"
Not everybody plays the same as you, tho. Everyone has their own way of playing games as diverse in options as Pokemon. For a game series all about community like Pokemon, I feel it's important to sympathize and think about others who are affected. When lots of people say they don't care or agree with the cuts, it feels like they don't care about the players who have treasured favorites that are cut. That just doesn't feel fair for everyone. :(
@@Jdoesstuff fair, but then theres the people that never change their teams between game. Funny how they cited storage, balance and new animations as the reasons for Dexit when hackers are comfortably putting all 1,200+ Pokémon/Forms, 900+ Moves and 300+ Abilities in BDSP of all things, SV still has tons of broken OP monsters running around, and we’ve actually gotten move animations NERFED between SWSH and SV. They’re just lazy.
