Just watched a survivor’s descendant talk about living in poverty because all her ancester’s (I think her grandfather) wealth was stolen. She said he owned hotels, including one of the nicest hotels in the world and was on track to possibly be on the same level as Hilton or Marriott but it was all stolen/destroyed and insurance companies wouldn’t pay for the damage either. Went from very wealthy hotelier to penniless and homeless overnight. Her story really put the generational damage into perspective from me. The white Tulsans not only robbed the black Tulsans but robbed generations not even born yet.

To be honest, I would take all this with a fistful of salt if I were you. The riot started after a gunfight outside the courthouse that resulted in the deaths of 10 white people and 2 black people, after which the white people armed up and marched on the black district setting fire to buildings. Aerial bombings? In 1921? When light aircraft were canvas kites that went up like torches anywhere near naked flames? With cockpits open to howling winds making it impossible to light even a cigarette? Nope. The cops sent up reconnaissance craft after the riot broke out and people, presumably scared out of their wits, associated them with the fires. There was a lot of property damage thanks to unchecked fires, but a 2001 investigation of the records confirmed a death toll of 36, including those aforementioned white folk. Not exactly a day at the races but not the bloodbath that's being manufactured here. In actuality, Rowland was never in any danger from a lynch mob and was later released without charge, whereupon he left Tulsa and never returned. The Tulsa riot was an ugly little chapter of American history, but it wasn't the tall tale that's being told here.

Because I grew up in New England, history class always focused on the revolutionary war, the civil war didn't get nearly enough air, and events post civil war as well. But I am catching up and fiction TV is sending me down paths of research and the truth is heartbreaking to me. Watchmen and Lovecraft country were two shows that made me find out. Many moments in Lovecraft country (except for monsters and magic) are real things. Sundown cities, habitual harassment of black people on the road. How black people were treated when moving into white neighborhoods. I am saddened that so little has changed and how much systemic racism remains.
