Looking Back! Crossroads Mall Last Day, 2017

Another victim in the trend of dead and dying malls. Today, this building is boarded up and mostly abandoned.
We went to Oklahoma City's Crossroads Mall a few hours before it closed it's doors permanently in October of 2017.
This isn't a history or retrospective. It's just a couple of middle aged guys taking a last walk through for the first time since the late 1980s trying to recall what it was like at its peak. ;)
This ended up being way longer than I intended, so I really apologize for it coming off boring and aimless!
However, if this albatross of a mall building becomes another Rolling Acres story years from now, maybe this video will become interesting! :D
Thank you guys so much for checking it out!
Tim

I have fond memories of this mall from the 70's... everything from high end audio/video stores to record (vinyl) stores to bumper cars at Le Mans Speedway. I also used to visit Spencer's Gifts almost every time I visited the mall as a teenager. It is really sad to see such a decline over the past 20+ years of such a great mall.

It's always bittersweet to see a place in this condition -- especially, when you can remember it being so full of life. I remember walking into this place and it was full of people. The restaurants were crammed with diners. Kids flooded into the arcade. It seemed like every store had several customers. The food court was buzzing with activity. Now it's just a relic of a bygone era -- except we saw it happen in real time. That just makes it more sad, I think.

Nate Broadus I completely agree. Now I get what my parents were talking about back when the Malls replaced downtown and Main Street. In a way there is a strange reversal. Downtown and Mid-Town OKC is the hip new thing and buzzing with business and activity.

This time of year stands out to me.. One of my holiday memories Crossroads full at Christmas with all those little trinket kiosks. That corner was the hobby shop then there was a book store and another store between the hobbyshop and the arcade but i can't remember what that other store was

I went to Crossroads when it first opened in 1974. I remember what a marvel it was at the time. It was the first mall I ever saw with a McDonald's inside. Fourteen year old me thought that was so cool. The thought of walking around in air conditioned comfort to go shopping and have fun when it was baking hot outside was just so appealing. I watch this video now and I'm just feeling "what the hell happened"?

Thanks for posting this. I didn’t know that it had closed completely as I moved to Lawton for my employer (I’m from OKC/Mustang) I am so grateful to be able to see this piece of history’s interior one last time. What a shame... it all went downhill after that fatal gang shooting and the recession. :(

The last part of the mall that you explore (at 15:42) to the right was Piccadilly’s cafeteria for decades. Next to it (on the “corner” or wrap-around as you turn to go toward the main part of the mall) was a jewelry store for years and years then, later, became a Moto Photo.

I remember being a little kid and playing on the stage and trying to climb the ramp around the pillars. I remember the fountain. Going to KB toys, the pet store, buying a pet rabbit. Eating at the McDonald’s and Braums. I remember exploring the hobby shop. They had rare coins in the back of the hobby shop and a big wheel from an airplane.

I was 10 when I visited this Mall with my Mom's Cousin in law Vondel Smith of Smith Mortuary, we were visiting from Ohio, Vondel wanted to show us this new mall with the oil pump in the parking lot, that stood out in my mind for years, the other was that Bumper car "LeMans" speedway, so pleased that you posted a picture of it in the day!!! Memories came flooding back! It was a one of a kind! YOU actually drove fast and turned left, could put someone out by sandbagging them into slower traffic or into the wall, Vondel kept me in the seat for quite some time because he was entertained by the concept of racing bumper cars. I returned to C.M. some years back, but mall was in a rundown state, and for a out of state guy chasing fond memories, I didn't get out and go in, the oil pump was still there tho. If we were'nt so P.C., that bumper car speedway would be radical today, just get people to sign a waiver before going for it. Two old Amusement parks in Pa. have done just that, but not speedway concept, still traditional old bumper cars that hit hard, Thanks for posting this walkthrough with back in the day pictures!

Back in the 80's I had a friend that worked the heating and air for the mall. Because of this he was the one that access to the roof. It took me up on it several times. I have literally been all over the roof, including to the peak of the pyramid area. One time we were smoking a joint on the roof and I took the roach up to the top of the pyramid and stuck it in between where the tin metal overlapped. We joked about if we really needed some weed, we know where a good sized roach is.

Toys by Roy was toward the middle of the mall, lower level just north of the escalator. The Hobby Shop, near Penney's, was original to the mall. LeMans was remodeled in the late 80's early 90's. The original store on the south side of the west corridor was actually the bottom floor of a two-story Emmer Brothers when the mall opened. The fountain was where the carousel was, and had to be removed because the under liner had rotted and it was leaking into the foundation. On the east end, the Mexican restaurant was El Fenix. Opposite that was the *original* location for Chick-fil-A, next to Radio Shack.

I was stationed at nearby Tinker Air Force Base from 1987-1990. I lived off base, just about 2 miles south of Crossroads. Actually, I moved every few months for 2 years but always near Crossroads. I'd live alone, get bored and get a roommate. Then I'd hate my roommate and move out. Then I'd get a gf and that's when trouble really started. Anyway, I went to Crossroads hundreds of times b/c in the winter of 88/89 I had problems with a wayward gf and I was such a wreck I couldn't stay in my house I'd drive to the mall 5x-10x a week, go down then up the sole escalator then back to my car and back to my house..over and over again. God what a minx. As an Air Force buck Sergeant I signed out codes to AWACS crews we had a small shop of about 12 Airmen/NCO's we'd lock up our vault Friday midnight but everytime an AWACS took off or landed over the weekend we'd get beeped by Command Post and the standby Sergeant (usually me) would come on in. I had to sign out a bunch of codes due to an alert crew swap on Christmas Day, 1987 and had to drive in one of the worst snowstorms in OKC history just to get there. Most of the codes were "secret" but some were actually For Official Use Only. Well, due to crazy events I had the beeper all summer 1989. I got beeped by the AWACS commander Col. Stark(Sterk?) and he said this FB-111 pilot needed a code to get back to his home base. We were not supposed to sign out codes to any other than AWACS crews. I was nervous I made a decision right then to sign it out to the FB-111 pilot. It was not SECRET it was For Official Use Only. Oh my god the boss of my shop wanted to bust me so bad. He sent a message to the people that controlled that code, telling them what I did. I was nervous as hell but they replied that everything was ok and be sure to get the destruction report from the pilot. Codes had a short lifetime to prevent the enemy from intercepting. Well, I didn't like my boss not appreciating me working 7 days a week so I hightailed it to Korea a few months later. I only have 200 similar stories like this it was the craziest life trust me.

They took a beautiful mall and made it ugly with the redesign. That ramp gave it character. They replaced the beautiful fountains with all that ugly garbage. When malls remove their fountains and replace them with eye sores you know the end is near. Edit: And why the heck would they care if you’re recording if it’s the last day of the mall being open?

Little me was in love with the carousel tho, everytime we’d see it I’d Beg my mom to let me go on it. I’d always get declined sadly. Most of the time we’d go to Sooner Mall, so that’s why I lack memories.

Well, the bright ugly colors and the store names not in English and the horrible lack of maintenance tells you exactly who moved in and that's the reason why it had no chance of survival once ownership changed hands. Sad, but true. Such a gorgeous mall - laid waste by total incompetence.

I remember going here with my dad to by mom a Christmas present the year after it opened he bought her a purse shaped like a horse saddle and I got my very first Orange Julius I was hooked so sad to see what was once such a great place now die all in the name of online shopping and the call it progresses but I say it's B.S.
