Good episode, Leonard. It is my opinion that these “sit and speak to your subscribers” episodes are excellent in building your community. The b-roll carries it along nicely. 👏

Hi Leonard, I started GCNs "30 in 30" last January (2023) and just kept going. Since then I've missed 5 days last year and 11 this, both due to sickness. My motivation is habit, and the will not to break the run. Best wishes for your fitness recovery and hope your trips go well.

Mr. Leonard, -45C is equal to I'm inside on a turbo trainer in a warm heated space!!!!! I've been training indoors since winter came. Not super cold but windy & cold enough to keep my old bones on a trainer. Thank you very much for your post and motivation. Keep up the training and good luck in South Africa. Looking forward to the post of that ride.

Hi Leonard Just wanted to say over the last two years you've been my main motivation. You're very humble and honest about your progress. I got into cycling for the purpose of losing weight. At my heaviest i was 271lbs in spring 2021. Today i am around 215lbs, a weight i am very happy and comfortable with. Watching your videos and seeing your progress has been a big motivator for me. Keep it up mate. Cheers from Newfoundland, Canada.

Hi Leonard. Best of luck for the Cape Cycle Tour. I've twice completed this ride and it is stunning. Although based in the UK, I will be in Cape Town during this year's tour. I'll try make it out to cheer the cyclists on. My advice, tuck in behind others for the outward leg if the wind is blowing (likely) and save some energy for Suikerbossie hill on the home stretch. Happy cycling.

Wishing you the best experience in South Africa, Cape Town is my original home town and the Cape Town Tour is an amazing event. Trust the weather will play along and you have all the spectacular views which the ride is famous for. Keep up the content, your videos are motivational to a lot of us 50+ average cyclists!

Maybe that’s what I need…to sign up for a ride. It’s too cold to do much of anything outside here in Utah and way too muddy when it does warm up. But I need a goal. I’m letting myself be way too lazy.

As usual a great video. Trying to get out on the bike or on Zwift can be difficult due to everyday family life. I’ve only managed it once a week fit the past month. I work as a Mental Health Practitioner and talk with my patients about ‘self-compassion’. This where you do something just for yourself everyday. It can be anything and be any length of time; five minutes to whatever. We spend so much time trying to please others but neglect our own wellbeing. Therefore I shall endeavour to take my own advice along with your motivation and crack on. I’ve signed up for a 100 mile challenge in June so need to get fitter. Thanks again Leonard. You are inspirational. Enjoy your challenges this coming year.

Why can’t you get your bike if you have a trainer? Make time. What is your longest ride? If you can’t get on your bike more than once a week your going to find 100 miles mighty tough.

I’ve done the 100 mile challenge for the past four years. I’ll be fine once the light nights are here. I do get on the smart trainer quite a bit but haven’t managed too much the last month due to work/family issues

I had a ride in your neck of the woods a couple of days ago, Tee shirt and shorts....very nice. Before that I had a ride along the NewZealand coastline, and before that I did a ride in southern Spain. No, I'm not a rich, world traveler (unfortunately). My travelling is done on my smart indoor trainer, a big screen TV, and a subscription to Fulgaz. Having said that, I do miss riding outside,(Vancouver Island, Canada) and can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit.

hey, I recognize those Canucks :) I'll be watching to see how your South Africa ride goes, and looking forward to seeing how you do at Mallorca. I'll be talking to my sis this weekend and maybe see about another Spain trip providing work doesn't get in the way, and providing my hip is doing ok. I recently failed a blood test so have improved my diet, which strangely enough has improved my hip pain. Guess some of the things I ate were creating inflammation. Will be seeing another doc about that hip soon; see what his recommendations are. And now I'm feeling motivated so going to head out for Day 41, another short night ride (got some chaffing the last few days from all the layers, so easing up a bit). Next week I'm away for work training so my daily cycling streak will end at Day 43 or so. Hopefully won't lose too much fitness in the 7 days I'm gone.

Always enjoy your videos LL. One thing that motivates me to ride sometimes is combining a ride with food shopping; not the routine supermarket run, but something unusual like a bakery or farm shop - a few are dotted around the countryside. A ride I do occasionally is Le Tour de Fromage: the ride from Salisbury to collect from cheese maker Book & Bucket in Cranborne, then onward to do the same from Lyburn Farm near Nomansland.

Having a bike with full mudguards, waterproof shoes (if said bike has flat pedals; else neoprene overshoes for your cycling shoes) and good gloves will make rain much less daunting. (I assume everybody already has a water-resistant jecket.) I will avoid riding my road or gravel bike in the rain, but I won't even have second thougts about the commuter bike.

This was a real great episode. I like how to talk to “us” about your adventures. I’ve been doing a lot more training rides than outside. We’ve had a late, stormy, snowy, rainy Utah winter this year. But I go out when I can. I’ve also planned some distance rides for Spring thru Fall. One goal is to ride 7k miles. But we’ll see about that. I also have a beach and surfing trip planned in the summer. Fun. It’s a true pilgrimage. Have fun in Mallorca

The weather was pushing me back indoors. Weeks of rain had given me the blues. I had a good think what it was about the poor weather that was stopping me. It was the “fear” of getting cold or too hot. I upgraded to some MTB winter boots, some waterproof pants, a quality lined raincoat and a rain hat for under the helmet. I also fitted a saddlebag to carry the extra clothes. No risk of cold, no worries.

I wish you well in South Africa. I believe you'll do fine. I wound up a few hundred Km short on the 3000 Winter Challenge a few years back. Today I rode 80Km in 7 degree Celsius sunny conditions. Tomorrow it snows! My goal is to ride a 200km brevet this year. I ride in dry conditions only and never above 35 degrees Celsius. I never ride indoors, and my 30 year old rollers sit neglected! 80km wasn't very hard, though I haven't ridden half that far in several months. 200km will be farther in a day than this old dog ever did, including 40 years ago!

Wow, that sounds rather ambitious Leonard. Having some big event on your calender or to do list really helps to motivate you to go out. And of course supportive friends are always good too. I'm still recovering from a burnout unfortunately, but am making good progress. I will also be going to Mallorca in April, hopefully by that time I'll be fit enough to do Sa Calobra and the lot.

Hi Leonardo. Thanks for this - the ‘fireside chat’ approach is very nice. Unfortunately I don’t have anything planned at the moment, so I’m very envious (FOMO!) but with luck I’ll have something to aim for in the second half of the year. Meanwhile I’m happily cycling, mostly solo, for my own fun and fitness and, I’ll be honest, for my mental health! 🎉❤ Good luck for SA, Mallorca and IOM - I’m looking forward to hearing and seeing how those trips go!

it is a great motovation to have e vents to prepare for in Spring/Summer/Fall. Where I live the weather is wet and icy with very low temps during Winter. The indoor trainer is my go to. I have a Livestrong spin bike. Through the Winter the routine is 5 straight days of 1.08 hours of riding, them a day of rest and one day of 1.5 hours of weights. I also walk one hour per day This will maintain my form through to the Spring. Thi

Getting out for walks in the morning with my dog is just kind of automatic for me. I don't even count that. It's a good thing but it's just walking. The only time I don't get a walk in with Hilde is if it is raining. Or rarely when I've been out very early on the bike and I'm cutting things too short for both things. Then I just plan for doing that later before dinner prep. On the "24 days of Cycling" I get the idea and it's fine, but I personally will not count stationary bike use like regular cycling. It's the substitute, and a valid one, but there isn't as much to it and I can't see putting it at the same level. Whatever bling you care to add with screens and all that, one is still one thing and one is still another thing. When I had the cold recently for instance, there were four or five days I didn't ride at all, though I was on the stationary bike for 20 minutes at least, but I wouldn't of said I was cycling on those days. Same thing for the days when it was too icy/snowy/cold over the winter. Lastly without using a log of some kind, I'd simply lose count of the days.

...do something every day - but make it an hour - can be split in 20min in the morning - mid day and night... walking (at pace or hill/terrain) is a fine way to burn fat - strengt training - more important at age...running - the best - if you can do it - if not - you should definitely train to be able to do it - cycling is too easy and are very limited to legs and cardio. Variation is very important - the body adapt to what you usually do and the effect will decrease over time - and its easy to get an injury. If I do a walk in the evening - in addition to trainig during the day - I find I lose weight rather easy.... but that has been hard to do this winter - ice all over... a few weeks now...

Hi Leonard - question that is off subject, but I thought you may be better to ask for me than GCN. I'm 56, 12.5 stone and getting into riding more than ever before - I've commuted for years but now got a e-road bike. I'd love to be able to ride hands free, I can signal no probs, but just cant get to riding hands free ( eg for unzipping my gilet or getting food out of my rear pocket etc. ) I think I'm slipping forward off my seat, but apart from that I just struggle to keep the bike still enough to feel balanced enough to let go properly of the handlebars. Any tips please? Never been able to do it even as a kid !
@jollygoodvelo
@jollygoodvelo 4 месяца назад
It might be just practice but it could equally be the aging process or even natural ability to balance. When I was a teenager I was able to ride no handed for miles but as I have got older my ability to do it has diminished. I believe it’s when the liquid in the balance organ in our ears starts to solidify.

In the spring when the weather improves? That’s a laugh we’ve been stuck in this cycle of blocked weather for the last 12 months sending us nothing but storms, wind and rain. Sa Calobra one i was super happy for you when you conquered it! I still don't think i could even get up it after only 3 years back on the bike. Could only dream of doing some of those bucket list rides. So i just spend my my time making sure i motivate myself for riding outside at least 1 day a week during the winter here (not as bad as many other peoples winters. but after decades training cycling/commuting through Scottish winters it took a huge move for me to shift my mind). So i went out in a rain storm and did some gravel/halfmac ride mid Jan. Drew. ru-vid.comxbkVuppBjgk?si=9qb5FUVnFRG11VKX
