Please bring back the old videos! It’s the job of museums not to hide the full educational potential of their collections, especially when they’ve been out there already and loved by so many.

I’m really disappointed and frankly pissed that an institution ostensibly devoted to education is removing content. Especially in an effort to avoid controversy. For shame.

I cannot express how disappointed and outraged I am to hear that the new administration at our beloved Mütter is censoring much of its educational material (virtual and physical) in some convoluted attempt to sidestep potential controversy. Trying to suppress the concerns about the ethics of medical research is impossible, even if you were to make your entire inventory virtual, the injustices and suffering of those people cannot be undone. Not only is this shift in the museum disrespectful to the contributors of the specimens themselves, but also to the staff (many of whom were just fired, I’ve heard) who lovingly and diligently have spent their careers keeping those precious parts attached to their HUMANITY. You’ve chosen to nullify the whole purpose of the Mütter, to confront and educate, with a full heart and an open mind. I never expected milquetoast to be in the cards, and mourn the institution I loved.

I am enormously disappointed to see the educational videos removed in this way. This does not serve the public in any way. Responsibility to the artifacts of this history is your mission integrity.

Please, PLEASE reupload the old videos!! There was so clearly so much love and hard work put into them, and I miss hearing the more detailed stories behind the museum contents! The way they help humanize the displays, particularly the anatomical specimens, is so incredibly moving and important to the overall context of the museum’s collection. Regardless of where the channel goes from here, thank you to the Mütter staff for the hard work and stellar video content over the years ❤

Please bring back Carol’s story. Her story is so moving and inspiring. I’m sure Carol herself would be disappointed to see you’ve taken her down.

I don’t know where to begin, but for starters, I am shocked. I am angry. I’m upset. But most of all, I am deeply hurt. I have had the privilege of visiting the Mütter museum on two separate occasions: once in 2018, and once in the summer of 2021 to see Spit Spreads Death; an experience which I had eagerly awaited throughout the height of the pandemic, and an experience which has impacted me immensely. It made me more passionate about history. It made me reflect on death, disease, and mortality. It made me sad; it made me uncomfortable. At times, it even made me cry. It made me grapple with this country’s history in a way I hadn’t before. Needless to say, I love this museum. It is one of my favorite museums in the country, if not my favorite. The way the staff has gone above and beyond to treat each object and individual in their museum with love, care, and respect; the tireless effort of those behind the scenes to educate the public, both in the museum and online; the Mütter’s continued dedication to unveiling the sad and often grim realities of our medical history-to making sure our past is not forgotten. All of these qualities have made this museum a place that I love, and one which I try to visit each time I go to Philadelphia. Which is why it is extremely upsetting and disappointing to me that all of the hours of well-made, educational content have been completely wiped from this RU-vid channel. As someone who does not live in Philadelphia, the videos that were once on this channel were and ARE an extremely valuable source for accessible information about the collections at the Mütter, as well as medical history in general. I believe wholeheartedly that our history is important. It should not be sanitized or kept away from others, and above all, it should ALWAYS be accessible. By removing all of your videos, you have essentially taken away the ability for people both in and outside of Philadelphia to access your museum & to become more educated on history. You have made history inaccessible, and to me, that is not okay. When I first went to the Mütter back in 2018, I remember seeing a jar full of dry, dead skin. I remember reading the sign that had been placed next to it; learning that it had come from a woman who had dermatillomania, and that she had spent hours upon hours of her life picking and plucking the dry skin from her feet. Most of all though, I remember the sheer amount of validation I had felt in that moment; here I was, in this museum, reading about a woman who had the same disorder as I did. Here I was, in this museum; a museum that not only recognized and respected a condition I have struggled with my entire life, but was also putting it on display so that others could see and learn. I remember I smiled; I felt less ashamed. And then I thought, “if at least ten of the people standing in this room leave this museum with a knowledge of my condition, then perhaps the world can become a more accepting place. Maybe they will finally take me seriously.” I tell this story as a testament to how important this museum is. The stories of the people held within the Mütter’s walls are vital; they humanize our history. They make the past tangible. And they put faces to the conditions that are so often disregarded, so that others can understand and empathize. It challenges us to rethink our point of view; to re-examine death and to look at disease and disability differently. It invites us to confront our nation’s problems, and encourages people to remember the people who came before them; to reflect upon the voices of those who got us where we are today, often not by choice. To honor the lives that they lived and to listen to their hardships; to learn from them. I don’t quite know how to end this. All I can say is that I’m disappointed. And on behalf of all the people who love this museum and have valued the things it has taught them, I hope you will consider bringing back your old content so that information is made accessible again. Mostly, I hope you will remember your slogan, so that the Mütter will continue to be disturbingly informative for years to come.

I wish the old videos were back, they were really well made and clearly passionate. The humanity behind each display was integral to the great handling of a grim topic.

Please bring back the older videos! I've rewatched them so many times, and it fills a content niche that no other channel I've seen does!

To the new leadership of the Mutter Museum: you have been put in charge of the Mutter Museum but you do not own it. We, all the humans walking this planet, everyone of us who experience being human, these artifacts belong to all of us. We deserve to see them and to know the stories of the artifacts and the experiences of the people that the artifacts represent. Be brave and do not hide these bodies just because a small but vocal faction find them disturbing. If you don't have the spine to handle the discomfort then cede your position to someone with the fortitude to show the interesting, the odd, and the uncomfortable.

Looking forward to having them back in their original form without removing content! Same goes for the museum!

The explanation of the missing videos is mind boggling. According to WHYY, "Dr. Mira Irons is the CEO of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, which runs the Mütter Museum. She said the decision to take down all their online exhibits and videos is an effort to 'make sure that our online presence is respectful and that it’s appropriate.'" Well the online presence of Mütter has always been respectful and appropriate. It's purpose has been strictly educational, not like a Barnum's sideshow or prurient in any way whatsoever. According to the WHYY article, Irons said "this is what the museum needs to do: include more of the context so that laypeople, just like physicians, can see that the specimens are people, not objects." I couldn't disagree more. While the physicians I've seen with their families at the museum are clearly talking with them with clinical detachment and speaking of the problems and conditions as if those people were objects, patient numbers and nothing more, most "lay" visitors, me included along with my family, have always seen the in-person and online content as showing people, trying to imagine the struggles that so many of them went through as well as how hard it was for their families. You can see that in the museum as even most teens don't gawk. They are almost always quiet and respectful. You hardly even see someone trying to sneak in a photo because they understand that it isn't to force photo sales, but to treat the dead with respect. The WHYY article also said that some of the remains may be there without permission and so remove the videos showing them from the online collection, but if you do that and don't also remove them from the museum itself shows that you not only actually disrespect them, but everyone else too. It's time to end your thoughtless removal of the online education videos that we use to education others by show them among family members and recommend them to others, about the human condition when the body goes awry and learn about it for ourselves.

Please put back the videos soon, they mean so much to all of us. For a lot of us it is difficult to make it to Philly and to be able to enjoy just a fraction of the Mutter Museum is so special. To say that the average person would not be able to contextualize the media that was once here (see WHYY article) is frankly insulting. People like myself enjoy the Mutter because it houses such rich medical history and while there is a dark depth to this history, there is an importance to bring light to it to best learn from mistakes that were made. The whole museum is an homage to those who helped the medical field what it is today. Please do the right the thing and restore the content that was once here so that we all may be able to learn and better our knowledge.

Why on earth would you remove all the educational content you already had up?!

It would be nice to see the educational content return. Edited, because I’ve been thinking. I was, in another life, a tour guide and once of the stories I used to tell centered around the concept of Philadelphia as a “haunted” city, in that it was (and to some degree still is) a place full of burial grounds, many of which are gone and their inhabitants unaccounted for. The woman we know as “The Soap Lady” came from just once such vanished cemetery, but we likely would know nothing about her had she not, in an astonishing breach of ethics, been stolen by Dr. Joseph Leidy. Leidy was the villain of this tale, both a stand-in for and an exemplar of a culture which viewed the dead as a commodity at best and an obstacle at worst. I would tell guests that they could find her at the Mütter, where after an unceremonious disinterment and a corpse-napping, she had found herself in a place where she was loved, looked after, and where what of her history was know was shared. It saddens me to learn that she and much of the rest of the collection are viewed by the present directorship not as people with a story to share but as a moral gray area to be shielded from view. It shows a lack of full knowledge of the museum’s inhabitants; they, the staff, and the visitors frankly deserve better.

please bring back the videos! I miss learning from them and it would be a shame to keep that knowledge away from people. Hopefully we can see them soon!

Thank you Mütter for so much amazing content! It helped me a lot in my research on various anatomy/medical history -related topics. On a personal note; thank you for helping in normalizing death by showing and handling human remains in a respectful and educational way. Personally this helped me a lot in dealing with the loss of close family members. It is comforting to know that some humans can receive a form of love and appreciation after death - or even when not having been compatible with life to begin with. I sincerely hope you will bring this content back, especially since you are one of only a few museums in the world (the only one in US?) on this subject matter. I cannot do without it

Just visited a few days ago and it was absolutely packed. So much so that I couldn't see all the exhibits. I saw your silver play button displayed up on the wall and thought to revisit some of these old videos to fill in the gaps I missed. Please either reupload your old videos or limit the amount of people coming into your museum! Disappointed :/

History Happened. We cannot change it. Only learn from it in attempts to do better. We can tell the stories of the pieces we are left with and where they came from. I always respected you guys for telling the stories of the people- not just pieces in your collection. The way the museum made sure to advocate for the people, pieces, and how those things ended up where they are. Hiding our history is why we are so divided. Hiding racial history, LGBT+ history, history of differently-abled individuals. We always end up divided as a species because even with so much information, we are unable to access much of it

Get the old videos back. Your new director isn't right for the museum. This is a shame and unironically discriminating for the folks who can't get out to Philly. Do better. Ffs.

Please restore the content online. And find people who want to honor this legacy, rather than hide it. A travesty.
