Oh man, what a hike this one was. While camped near the town of Ajo, AZ, we set out to find an area of a thousand or more petroglyphs and pictographs, only to find the limit of our endurance.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If you're into being off-grid and boondocking or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

I know when you have a channel like this people are always giving you advice but I just wanted to say I have a bad ankle as well and I've learned to never go anywhere without a ace bandage or they have some very nice bands that go around ankles and knees etc that can help you out in a bind. Carrying a collapsible lightweight walking stick helps as well taking the pressure off some of those injured areas. You guys take care, and like you said at your age (and my age) you did pretty well. considering the rough terrain

At our age, the most awesome thing about coming up against your limits (oh yes, it's awesome), is in the trying. If the desire is there and some of the muscles, a modicum of balance (use tools if necessary), then we have to try. KUDOS!

Linda I hope you feel better asap! This is one for the books and you can say “I’m glad I made it!”. You’re tougher than you thought you were, or tougher than you wanted to be. My hat is off to both of you! Lots of these adventures end up with someone injured, needing rescue or worse. You did a great job of planning, leaving records of your activities, monitoring your progress and had the good judgement to turn around. Can I make a recommendation? Hiking poles are so helpful for people with sore joints, especially up or down hills. I was just at the Nevada state Park Valley of Fire outside Las Vegas and took a 0.75 mile easy hike on the “Mouse’s Tank trail”. The petroglyphs were amazing, the hike was easy and my hiking poles protected my balance many times. I have a couple of vertebral compression fractures and have been rehabbing my back for a year. I was so proud of myself for finishing in good shape.

Me and Jenny ran into cartel smugglers in that area. We took a hike and on the way back Jenny was taking photos of organ pipe cactus in the magic yellow light before dark. I said “Gotta go or we’ll be hiking in the dark.” We were nearing a wash and suddenly I saw 5 men all in camo with big green plastic bales on their backs. I pushed Jenny’s shoulders down and said “ssshhh, get down!” She whispered “Are those hikers?” I said “ Hell no, we don’t want to meet these men, they may kill us!”Luckily we were over their right shoulder and they must have not seen us. I put my hand in my chest pack and onto my .357 magnum. We waited, but had to go across their path behind them. We hustled to the car and 2 men were there and approached us asking which direction we were going.I had one hand on the corner of my chest carry rig in case I needed my weapon fast. I told them “We are leaving, no passengers!” I stayed facing them as Jenny got in, and I waited til they walked away before I turned my back to get in the door. We called 911 and they had Border Patrol meet us. We asked if they would be going after them with a helicopter, but he said no, and they were tracking 5 groups. He wasn’t about to take them on by himself. We won’t be traveling there again.

Linda, Should use those Elastic ankle braces! When she goes hiking. And stay ahead of the game that way, giving her support! Before I retired I took care of elderly people convelesing from surgery And helping with light work they needed help with! One lady I helped when I started helping her. She said her doctor wanted to put her in a institution Because she was having mental problems. First thing I always did was research their Med's. I found she was on 3 different Med's that should not have taken with the others!!! Problem solved! She was Very greatfull! I suggested she have a serious talk with her doc, who wanted to put her away! He should of know Not to give her those med's!!! She also went to Another pharmacy. So never go to more than one pharmacy without Notifying them both!!!

@@gonagain have made it clear through to California after 14 days of trouble with my battery system due to faulty wiring by Camping World when putting in new batteries wrong. Could have caused a fire in the rig. Thank heavens for nomad friends who were able to fix the problem. But not before having to pay for 6 nights in a hotel, loss of food and many stressful nights. A real learning process. Alls working now.

A personal question. Were you two doing adventures like this together when you were in your mid to late 20's? In the summer of 1983 while I was stationed at 29 palms I got a hair up my ass and rode my 1982 Goldwing Interstate motorcycle out to Death Valley as I recall I think it was on the 4th of July weekend. Totally insane move due to the heat but I was a 19 year old hard charging Marine at the time and I wanted to check out the valley. When I got there it was crazy hot and I was riding like a squid in shorts and a tank top with my helmet on the helmet hook before the helmet law just to avoid heatstroke. There was no one there at least outside and the ranger's trucks were parked by their hut with the AC unit going full blast. I was about to split and maybe head up into the Panamints to find a cooler place to camp due to the heat but I noticed a couple and their one lone van in the campground at Furnace creek and decided to go over and say hi since they were as crazy as me. They turned out to be a couple of adventures. The man was an engineer who traveled the world doing construction projects and went on expeditions between jobs, his wife whom I thought was Asian was Hawaiian and they both lived in Hawaii but ventured to the mainland to vacation and explore. I ended up hanging out with them for the rest of the afternoon and evening, camped there for the night and split at first light before it got insanely hot again. I've been watching and enjoying your videos and wondering if that was you two I met back then. I didn't commit their names to memory since this was back before social media, I was unlikely to ever run into them again and I met a lot of people on my adventures at the time anyway too many to keep in touch with. Unlikely but my curiosity has been peeked since I've been a subscriber.

No, that wasn't us, but back in those days we were sailing the south pacific and, when at home, doing road trips in our VW bus. It sounds to me like you've been bitten by the adventure bug all of your life too.

The only tires I can recommend are Goodyear Endurance. That's what we're currently running and it's because of glowing reports from others.

@@gonagain Rick, I'd like to apologize. I think I mislead you with my tire question. I was wanting to know what brand and make tires you use on your vehicle. The way I stated it I might have gave you the wrong idea. Was the Goodyear Endurance for your trailer or vehicle? If it was for your vehicle, maybe you did read through my confusion (Grin). I have a question for Rick .. if I have a jeep rated to tow 3500 lbs and I purchased a 1600 lb trl . How much weight would you recommend adding ? And do I really need a tandem axle if I'm not planning to go over 3500 total pounds. We have decided on a 12 ft because we have two small and one 40 pound dog
@gonagain
@gonagain Год назад
You're not going to have a lot of power on the hills and against a headwind, but I see folks towing cargo trailers with their Jeeps all the time. Just try to keep your build as light as possible and leave the heavy stuff at home. We travel light anyhow ourselves. The biggest problem you're going to have isn't the weight anyhow, it's the wind resistance on the front of the trailer. We do our best to keep our speed at around 55mph whenever possible because going faster really hurts the mileage!
@Nomadiccamping
@Nomadiccamping Год назад
@Gonagain thank you for the advice . I won't be adding too much weight. And cutting to one axle would help with the weight by a few hundred pounds. I also plan on a v nose.

Yes, but parts of it would have been pretty technical and maybe beyond my level. I think the worst part you might have to get off and walk it. The bike would actually be a lot faster on the road going in.
