I'm gonna leave tonight at this. Next week i'll have a lot more thanks for tuning in. Also thank you for the clarification on the lyrics had to do a double take
He is in love with the sea (he is a sailor) and it mentions that he was an honest man and told her from the beginning that his true love is being at sea so he did not want to commit to her.
Thomas Frederick is right. He can't commit to her because of his love of the sea. It has nothing to do with a girl in every port. Listen to the lyrics.
"Dancing in the Moonlight" by King Harvest is a great One hit Wonder! It's another toe tapper, Jay! A song for a "regular" play day is Chris Rea "Fool If You Think It's Over". It's a really good mellow rock/pop song. He wrote it about his little sister going through her first break up with a boy. Great job as always, Jay. Namaste.
Lovin' Spoonful ... They're one-hit wonders .... One hit right after the other ... Summer In the City, Rain on the Roof, Do You Believe In Magic?, Nashville Cats .... Did You Ever have to make Up Your Mind?, Darlin' Be Home Soon, and don't forget Welcome Back ...
This song always makes my think of high school. It was really popular during my last year or two of high school. Brings back a lot of good memories. As always, a GREAT reaction!
Another great song from my youth. Blasting on the radio in my first car, an orange VW squareback; Tangerine was it’s name. Singing my heart out, broken-hearted. Great vocals too!
It's not about infidelity...he's a sailor & he loves being on the sea...it's like he's married to the sea.. It's not about him being with other women...
I've watched a lot of your vids over the last few days and I must say....you are my favourite reactor, you are just so real and happy your facial expressions are a joy to watch.....happily subbed to you
Peter Quill's mom sang along with this song on the radio in the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. I had always loved the song & glad they brought it back in the movie! The sailor's "love" wasn't another girl. The sailor's "love" was the sea!
This is one of the greatest OHW of all time. So popular in 1972. Everyone would sing this song at school. Love this song. Great song to end One Hit Wonder Wednesday. What a start! Congrats JV.
Like most sailors, his first love is the sea. I love this song as it always makes me think about one of my best friends from my very early working days. He went to Rutgers and he would tell stories about parties where Looking Glass, the local band, always played. Stephen was also a sailor. I think I will call him, it’s been ages since we spoke. Thanks for Brandy, she’s a fine girl,
I was a 16 year old in East St.Louis,Illinois when this came out and I played it a lot on juke boxes back then, and still love it today. Thanks for this!
My daughter and I danced to this at her wedding - It’s our song! Looking Glass used to hang at my Dad’s Sub Shop (“My Hero”) in New Brunswick when I was a little boy! Always my favorite song, so I would sing her to sleep to this to her every night! The “Great American Song!”
I think my niece was named after this song, her name being Brandi Nichole. We have called her Nikki her entire life. She's married now with 2 children. She married a man... Who calls her 'Brandi." She's a great wife and mother. I'm overjoyed for her.
Ohh My. Again... One of My All-time Favorite "One-Hit Wonder" tunes. L♥️VE the Reaction♥️ And by the way Jayvee, I usually do have to go to RU-vid and play some of those good old favorites and listen to them again after listening to you play them. It's like potato chips, can't just eat one. The songs... Can't Just Listen to it one time. LoL!! Gotta go back and play it again.
Here's few more 70s Funk bands worth checking out: Ohio Players (song: Sweet sticky thing); War ( song: slipping into darkness); Earth, Wind & Fire (song: Keep your head to the sky); Maze (song: Happy Music). Started listening to Count Basie and Cab Calloway because of infectious joy from grandmother playing her 78s records. Still have a passion for music now that I'm the grandmom. (Really love Gospel now). God bless you, young man.
Are you kidding me! That's such a great story. I thought the same thing and ended up forgetting and naming our little girl emeline-no regrets, but you've made me smile.
I think this song is about a sailor who travels and although he truly cares for her, he cannot commit. He is honest in letting her know that her desire for more will not be achieved. He probably has a special person in every port, and is happy with that 🧡
As others have pointed out, this song is not about infidelity. Brandy fell in love with one of the sailors who came to the bar where she worked, but he was honest with her and told her that he was in love with the sea and could never be with her full time. I hadn't heard this song for years, but it showed up recently on a TV commercial...so I pulled it out of my collection and have been listening to it a lot lately.
Man, you're just nailing it with the one-hit wonders today! Whenever I hear the word Wonders, it brings to mind the 1996 movie That Thing You Do. The fictional group, The Wonders, played a song called That Thing You Do that actually hit the charts in real life. I'd love to hear you cover that one sometime.
There's a cartoon...an old sailor comes into a barroom and says to the barmaid, "Good news, Brandy...I've had my marriage to the sea annulled...and you're still a fine girl!"...Tried to find it online but couldn't. (Did find a pretty funny fictitious "rebuttal letter" from Brandy to her sailor...)
The Sea is wife, his lover and his lady. Poor Brandy doesn't stand a chance against the Holy Trinity! Btw, I think this is only song ever written about a bartender. Respect!
I grew up in the 70s and heard this song all my life. I always felt the sailor loved her so much that he couldn't be selfish and keep her waiting on him all the time because he is a sailor and that was his commitment. It wouldn't be fair to her to make her live alone most of her life always waiting for him.
Its just bittersweet. You can’t help who you fall in love with. I always felt good that the sailor acknowledged the love (the chain he gave her) but didn’t lead her on or give her false hopes.
Looking Glass did have a follow-up hit called Jimmy Loves Mary Anne, although it wasn't as big a hit as Brandy and so has been somewhat forgotten over time.
My Dad was a sailor, he went round the world multiple times and spent decades at sea visiting every country where there was a coast. He’d be gone for weeks at a time working in Africa as I grew up. The sea was his calling so I understand exactly what the song is about. My Dad loved his family but the sea was in his blood. He died of lung cancer a year ago as I write this.
I Grew up in the 60'2, but mostly jived on the 70's sound, ALL of it, Looking Glass had other incredible songs. What your all missing is this is a TRUE LOVE SONG, everytime I here it I dream of a girl I used to know when I did a lot of camping with a group. She was my "Brandy" although she was a year or two older, I always think of her when I hear this song. PLEASE, read lyrics to understand that Brandy's Love for her Sailor was much like the relationship between Miss Kittly and Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke. Brandy was a waitress, who served drinks, when the man that she loved and I believe this Sailor loved her, because he would always bring her gifts, but he could not settle down like Dillon. The Sailors TRUE LOVE was the Sea, but when he arrived in Brandy's Ports it was an unspoken Love affair and Brandy used to love to hear his tales of the Ocean, but alas, the Sea was the Sailors love, he couldn't give it up even though he loved Brandy so Brandy, waited, even though she knew it couldn't be, like Miss Kitty and Matt. She was told she would have made a good wife, but the man she wanted she could have, because the harboor(s) was his town and he would then sail on his true love the Sea. Brandy never gave up hope, that's why she cherished the locket and chain by her Sailor. No cheating, he just could not settle down like anyone in love with their job. But there's always a special someone, somewhere for Both............ One of the greatest lyrics. Oh, the reason why so short, they all were back then, 45's could only hold a certain amount of music, much like when the walkman came out, held enough for the CEO's love of a certain symphony :) Research a little.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 soundtrack song. Oh wow this is fabulous! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻thank you for sharing and to James Gunn - director for bringing us these amazing 70’s classics to my ears. Just such beauty 🎶🎶
