Just a tip, before you hammer on the countershaft again, put a bolt in the end and bottom it out on the shaft. Then you can whale all you want on it without mushrooming the end of the shaft. You'll only mushroom the head of the bolt, and that is easily replaceable. Good luck.

Let’s see a ESR case build next so we can learn from the pros and cons also along with case splitting when the bearings stick to the crank upon splitting the cases, our 250r people need to be thinking twice before reassembling. Love the progress on the quad

Two floor jacks or Jack stands w a piece of tubing and a small chain. Take a small stout sheet of natal and pop holea in it to line up w all head bolts. Put it on using all nutsand run chain between cylinder head and top of cylinder but not to where chain can get into top of cylinder. I used a old pillow and put under engine w it a few inches off ground.buse tubing chain and Jack stands to hold it up and then you can w a board and sledge beat dog shit out of the top of clutch or flywheel cover or the back of trans versus beating on cylinder and w the weight of engine also usually afyer you get your plate for head bolts done you'll have cylinder off so any damage in jus a few mins

ATVs are strugglng because everyone wants a side by side. I like them too but I like to modify my atv. A side by side is for carrying others I don't see the point in getting crazy power when there are others with you. Especially those that are to timid to ride fast.
Brent Boggs no, piston rings do actually normally pop out at ports, it’s entirely possible. Next time you rebuild a motor with long bourse just look at the top and bottom of the intake and exhaust ports, they’ll be scratched badly because the piston rings pop out a tiny bit and then they go back in.
CT racing brah. They even had a couple dozen brand new Hinson quick change clutch covers on Polished OEM honda dide covers for less than 500 bux. I bought 3 in 2017
Simple and powerful!!! I miss my R.....should have never got rid of it....traded it for a 68 Camaro after a year of building and 15 grand later. Would have kept racing if it wasn't for them killing 2 stroke quad and not having the money to build a new 4 stroke race quad, another 20 + grand at 41.....my heart keeps telling me to do it but my body says noooo waayyy....I'm not digger doug...lol.
That engine with your weight, one good clutch dump will explode 2nd gear im guessing. Yukon stopped making gears for them years ago! might be better off trying to find some used ones... hey im no expert but I would more research about HD gear sets before I put the case back together.
always give a thumbs up brother but the atv market (sport type) is just about dead 4x4 atv's are killin it right now. The dirtbike market is been strong for the past three years
the only way it can come back if they were going to make two strokes they are cheaper to work on cheaper to buy and parts are cheaper. but if they (the BIG four hey would still be priced at 10 grand a YFZ 450 is a great quad it has been four years but not 10,000 dollars pricing the little guys out. that's why two strokes are making a little come back again cheaper parts now cheaper to work on. Could you imagine the price it would cost if honda brought back the 250r. If you remember what I told you back in the day you are going to be about 12 grand by the time its finished. you are past that and haven't even started building yet. and in your last video you just cracked the cases which equals more money. I loved mine when I had it but I am glad its gone. Got lots of love and respect for you bro keep up the great work. but the old 250r's are money pits
in my teens and early 20's pretty much everything was 2-stroke especially dirt bikes and 2x4 4 wheelers . only ones was 4-stroke like 4x4 wheelers and some 3 wheelers (trikes) .. my cousin had a 1986 4trx 250R I think his dad paid like little over $2000 brand new in 1986
You realy want at least a 330 on a TRX. Anything more than you have to source the old hardened steel gear sets or mayby try the ESR ones. They were calling suntin that started with a W. Its been 20 years since i put the hardned gears in a 250r lol.I never had a problem using the slide hammer bearing pullers. Jus freeze the bearings when re installing and its so easy its a joke.
Sorry my OCD is in overload.... it’s not a “motor”, they run on electricity, it’s an engine, it runs on fuel. Also, you wouldn’t roll in a mud puddle prior to a heart operation, why open that engine up with all they dirt and grime on it? I do like the content though. Keep it coming.
Thanks for not being a tech weenie. Your assessment of the engine parts was very realistic versus unnecessarily condemning parts. Solid vid and content. Surprised how similar that motor is to my 97 CR250r’s.
I should imagine the splitter on the exhaust port is there so the span is less .... the ring would less likely to dislodge or early wear on the oem head
Awesome videos buddy, I've been riding since I was 6 years old, I'm 33 now and I'm still into quads, I ain't bias towards sxs or dirt bikes but quads have always been my thing, I've owned 2 ltz400's, a vinson 500, outlander 800r, and now believe it or not I'm riding a 03 Ds650 Baja, extremely low hours on it a hell of a find, I'm almost ready to ride it I'm just waiting for the snow to melt and salt to wash off the roads to ride it, but I'm shopping right now for a project honda 450r, I'm trying to find solid machines that need a little TLC, save them and sit on them for a while, some of them are climbing in value :) I just hope it actually comes back in the near future, Yamaha's the only sport quad that's still active and it sucks that they have no competition, they say SXS killed sport quads and I fully agree on that I think they should of kept at least one sport quad to each brand, anyways good videos bud keep em coming :)
DS650 is a rare machine man; I always hear goof reviews on them though. I agree; SXS's killed the sport quad game but I think that sport quads can come back and ride along side dirt bikes and SXS's.
@@MichaelSabo yeah I don't really go by the reviews haha, I love all sport quads, I just prefer the Ds650 due to long rides and torque, its a heavy quad though so its not for everyone, looking to get a 450 or something just to mess around with, anyways keep up the good videos bud :)
Awesome vid Mike! Are u gonna upgrade clutch at all besides the Hinson basket? Maybe a 89 update or cr500 springs? Be a cool video to do with all the different clutch mods for a 250r.
Thank you Jason! Yes I am running what's called the "Neils clutch mod." I believe it's made up from 400ex, 250r and cr500 parts; it's supposed to be pretty solid.
i had a similar issue. The transmission was fine in my case, someone who put the bottom end together before i got the bike didnt secure the transmission gears correctly (missing trust washer). Put new bearings in, and it was good to go!
Been watching this video like an old Friends rerun where Ross professes his Love for Rachel...never gets old. Honestly is great to watch and learn as I have my R motor sitting on my bench waiting for its makeover. Trying to decide on ESR, Duncan Racing or another manufacturer that I have not yet found. Thoughts?
Dont hammer that trans shaft if you can help it... get a pair of vice grips on the collar and pull it off. Then pull off the rubber groment that is very hard to see. That tiny rubber groment is probably what is preventing the shaft from falling out.
@@MichaelSabo its not as bad as people make you think get ahold of Dave Roberts at ILR performance and Greg at Off Road Innovations and you shouldn't have a problem
I have just started on the same bike a 1987 CR25R Compression is 160 psi but wouldn’t turn over found the water pump impeller blocked up solid The right water pump cover needs replacing but can’t find one don’t know what the differences are on the 1988/9 which are available The bike has been standing for 15 years 🙈🙈 and not risen in that time
Michael Sabo Thanks I cleaned the carb installed a new kit found the right water pump casing history put a little gas in carb and it started got 160PSI compression
