The "MH" carts were made 88 to 90, there were 5 revisions with DIP chips, and 1 with COP (glob-top). The 88 run of Mario/Duck Hunt did not have the white divider line. So your friend's cart is from Mar 88 to Jan 89.

If I remember correctly, it was a part of a combo with the NES and the light gun. The game came with the box and when you are shipping millions of units, lightening the load of each boxed unit.....a full 20ft container could save a metric tonne in weight and that's a huge saving in freight.

Yes the proper term for the glop top Globe top whatever you want to call it. The proper term is cob. don't know if that should be capitalized. Or spaces between the characters whatever. but yes absolutely right it's chip on board. Same as something like a cob LED.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 2 года назад
@@daquarlow COB/Chip-On-Board is correct. It is called that across the industry, not just in Nintendo games. Even in a normal DIP (Dual In-Line Pin package) the “chip” is actually a silicon rectangle that is deeply embedded in the package. They connect the silicon chip to a “lead frame” which is a metal rectangle with a bunch of pieces that will end up being chip legs. The lead frame is positioned around the chip and then the chip is connected to the leads/pins using a wire-bonding machine that makes extremely small jumper wires. Those connections are extremely delicate so they encapsulate it in ceramic or epoxy or plastic or whatever the chip package is made of with the pins protruding out. With the leads/pins anchored inside the package and the bond wires unable to move, the frame is broken off of the leads. The leads are then bent down so that they can fit through the PCB. Chip On Board production does away with the lead frame by using the chip with bond wires on the PCB directly. The bond wire connections to the chip and PCB are still too delicate so they still need to encapsulate it with epoxy blobs/globs. If you need to make a lot of something then it can be cheaper than getting packaged DIP chips and Nintendo certainly needed to make a lot of Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. Millions.

@TBustah

Well, ALL versions of this cartridge were only available as a pack-in. You couldn't buy it separately. It is strange that it doesn't have a seal, but maybe Nintendo didn't bother because the customer knew it was a genuine cart since the only way to get one was to buy one of the bundles. My initial thought when I saw that label was that maybe this was a top loader-era cartridge, but having a regular board with ROM chips on it kind of negates the idea that this cartridge was made on the cheap. It's probably just a version that came with the Action Set before they started using the glop tops to cut costs.

My assumption would be the copy that has the actual EPROM was from when Nintendo first starting packing in SMB/Duck Hunt in with the NES Action Set back when the Zapper still had the Grey color scheme. They probably shipped the glob version with the original label variation during the transition to the Red color scheme Zapper Action Set. There was one last label variant that had the Nintendo Seal, and I believe that was packaged with the third and last release of the Action Set (the box had a red bar that said "Nintendo Entertainment System" at the top).

( A year late with this comment, I'm sure its been made before). Blop top = SMD this one has DIP chips. If it's like other consoles and comp electronics from around that time, early revisions are DIP & later ones are SMD. Once they nailed things down, they would switch to SMD chips to move higher volumes. Unlike today, SMD only made sense if you had high demand back then.

SMD's don't have to be potted (what every calls blobs apparently). The potting is so they don't need to worry about manufacturing packaging, as the epoxy potting does the trick. The potted IC's are cheaper to manufacture, hence their usage. As a side note, there are many reasons to use SMD over through-hole, though through-hole still has uses (higher power, strain relief...etc), while SMD these days is used not only because it's easier to automate, can be more dense in placement, higher layer count PCB's, but also because of electrical requirements for higher speed signals (parasitic inductance and capacitance from those long through-hole contacts).
@wiggy8912
@wiggy8912 5 лет назад
Nope. Very few NES games used any SM components, let alone a board comprised of them exclusively. Star fox for the SNES is a great example of how your assertion is completely backwards. SF used glob top boards, but every FX game that came after it did not (though they did use soldered SM components).
@frogbutts3628
@frogbutts3628 7 лет назад
The epoxy coated units are probably newer (made after the game was being made in mass). The wire bonded chips were cheaper to produce, but it is unlikely they would have done it right out of the gate, as it would have required additional engineering.

There are actually 3 different versions of SMB/Duck Hunt. By different versions I mean, each label/board is slightly different. The version people normally own has a White line through the middle of the label and a Nintendo seal on the lower right. The cart from Tom is an early run of the game before the board was altered. The cart from your collection was made later by Nintendo to save money on chips. Sidenote: All SMB/Duck Hunt carts use MH chips.

In south america, we were used to see bootlegs (specially on Super Nintendo and Genesis) pirate bootlegs of every single game, even of bad ones. dowingba you can pick these up for 99c all day long.. by far the most mass produced game for nes.. I have no idea why this guy is so amazed. They included these with your nes in later runs because they were worthless even then.

Funnily enough where I live; top gun is by far and away the most common game. I have no idea why; but I see stacks of them in almost every thrift store I walk into... Heck; I've found not one but TWO just laying about in ditches on the side of the road. that's certainly not a common occurrence; but it speaks to how prevelant that game is here

+John Riggs I had an early NES (grey light pistol) & I opened the Super Mario / Duck Hunt cart & it was ROM chips & I remember the "night sky" background behind the game graphics. Surface mount chip-on-board is a later more capital intensive construction technique & I doubt Nintendo had access to such facilities in their early console production.

You got me curious. So I opened the cart I got with my NES for Christmas back in the 80's (I still have the complete original set I got, with the light gun, and I still use it on an old 36" CRT set up in my game room). Mine looks the same inside and out.

I've had at least one like that. More variations of SMB than you can count. It's legit. The label stuff is just due to the limitations they had to work with before digital publishing caught on.

ClassicGamer88 has a video about all of the variations of this cart. According to his video, Nintendo actually had a recall of the Mario/Duck Hunt carts w/o the seal of approval so that the art could be redone to include the seal.

gilberto pineds he confused because there is more common version of the Mario/ duck hunt cart with the Nintendo logo on the bottom of the cart label and not in the middle. And it doesn't have Nintendo official seal of quality. Did watch the video???
@christinadoxstader1787
@christinadoxstader1787 6 лет назад
All he said was that he suspected it might be because the weight felt off and the label looked weird. I could see why he would think that considering that apparently every cart he has ever held felt and looked a certain way.

I've seen 3 diffirent NES combos: one with the obvious mario/duck hunt, mario/duck hunt/track and field and one that had only super mario or only duck hunt, but those single ones are rare. The 1987-1989 NES releases had mario/duck hunt later from 1989 on had the 3 games

@John Riggs: RIGG'd Games : NES-MHROM contains up to 4 32kb banks of PRG ROM and up to 4 banks of 8kb CHR ROM. Doraemon, Gumshoe, Dragon Power and Thunder and Lighting also contained MHROMs. It's normal but there are very few carts that use this type! In fact, only SOME Mario/Duck Hunt games use the MHROM. You have indeed made a find, though who knows how rare it really is!
